3Confirm you can reach everything you need to reprogram
If one car is at work and another is on a trip, a memory clear leaves those buttons dead until the vehicles come home. That may be fine, or it may be a bad day to do this. Better to know now.

The third is a limit and force reset, and it has nothing to do with either of the others. Clearing every remote from the opener's memory
Basic checkThis is the procedure most people arrive looking for, and it's straightforward once the preparation is done. Holding the Learn button for around six seconds tells the opener to forget every device it knows about. It happens instantly, it applies to all of them, and there's no way to be selective. That absoluteness is the feature — it's the only way to guarantee that a transmitter you can't physically retrieve no longer opens your door.
How you can tell: You want to remove access, or you need room in a full memory. This is the right tool for both.
- Write your list first. Every handheld remote, the exterior keypad, and the button in each vehicle. Physically collect what you can.
- Get to the Learn button on the powerhead — usually under the light lens or behind a rear panel.

Travel limits are the opener's record of where the door should stop in each direction, and force is how hard it will push before deciding it has met an obstruction. They drift over the years as the door settles, and they can be lost outright after a power interruption. The symptoms are distinctive: a door that stops short of the floor, one that reverses the instant it touches down, or one that stops before it's fully open. On Genie units, lost limits show up as both Safe-T-Beam indicators sitting steady red, which fools people into replacing perfectly healthy sensors.
How you can tell: The door stops in the wrong place, reverses on contact with the floor, or doesn't open fully. Nothing to do with remotes at all.
- Before anything else, check the door is mechanically sound. Pull the emergency release with the door closed and lift by hand — a healthy door feels like around ten pounds and stays wherever you leave it.
- Re-engage the trolley with the door fully closed before running any routine.
- Find the procedure for your specific model. The sequence varies significantly between manufacturers and generations, and a generic set of steps won't do — the model sticker on the powerhead is what you need.
- Run the routine start to finish without interruption. Stopping partway is one of the ways limits get lost in the first place.
- Make small adjustments if you're fine-tuning rather than starting over — a quarter turn or a single button press, testing between each.
- Finish with the safety reversal test every time: lay a scrap 2x4 flat on the concrete directly under the center of the door — flat, not on edge — and close the door. It must reverse when it meets the board.

You've just moved into the house
Basic checkWorth doing on day one, and it's the situation where a memory clear is unambiguously the right call. You've no idea how many remotes were programmed to that opener over the years — previous owners, their adult children, a contractor, a house sitter, a car that was sold with its button still trained. None of that's visible from the powerhead, and none of it's disabled by changing the locks on the front door.
How you can tell: New house, and you've inherited whatever remotes the previous owners handed over. Which may or may not be all of them.
- Clear the memory before you do anything else with the system. Hold the Learn button until the indicator goes out.
- Program only the devices you're actually keeping. This is a good moment to discard remotes that came with the house and buy your own if you'd rather.
- Set a new keypad PIN rather than keeping whatever was on it, and choose something that's not the house number.
- Clear and reprogram the HomeLink buttons in your own vehicles.
- If the previous owner had the opener connected to an app, ask them to release it from their account — that's a separate matter from the radio memory and both need doing.
- While you're at it, check the door balance and run a 2x4 safety reversal test. You've no service history for this door, and that's the fastest way to find out where you stand.

A remote has been lost or stolen
Basic checkThe important thing to understand here's what a memory clear is for. Programming a replacement remote does absolutely nothing to the missing one — the opener's list simply gains an entry, and the lost transmitter remains on it, working perfectly. The only way to remove it's to empty the whole list and rebuild it. Any advice that suggests otherwise is describing a feature that doesn't exist on residential openers.
How you can tell: A remote is missing, or a vehicle with a programmed button has been sold, or somebody who had access no longer should.
- Do this promptly rather than adding it to a list. A missing remote is a key to your house that somebody else may be holding.
- Gather every remaining device before you start, so you aren't left short afterwards.
- Clear the memory by holding the Learn button until the indicator goes out.
- Reprogram only what you still have, testing each one.
- If a vehicle was sold with a trained HomeLink button, clearing the opener handles it from your end regardless of what was done in the car.

The memory is full and won't accept anything new
Basic checkThe ceiling depends entirely on the model: about 8 remotes on an entry-level Chamberlain or Craftsman, 12 on a LiftMaster Contractor, 24 on a Premium, and as many as 40 on an Elite. A keypad takes its own slot and doesn't reduce that number. Households drift over the limit without noticing. When it's full, the opener declines new devices with no explanation at all, which reads exactly like an incompatible remote and sends people back to the store unnecessarily.
How you can tell: Everything currently paired works fine, and a new device won't take no matter how carefully you follow the sequence.
- Count what's actually paired, including the remote in the drawer and the button in the car nobody drives.
- Use this as a chance to prune. Devices for cars you no longer own, or remotes you haven't seen in two years, shouldn't be reprogrammed.
- Gather what you're keeping, plus the new device.
- Clear the memory with a long press on the Learn button.
- Reprogram in order of importance, so that if you run out of time the essentials are done.
- Write down the final list and keep it somewhere findable, since this is the information that would have saved you the trip.

You cleared the memory and now something doesn't work
Basic checkIt happens, and it's entirely recoverable — just tedious. The device that was missed is almost always an in-car button, because vehicles aren't in the garage when the list gets written, or a keypad, because it's outside and out of mind. Nothing is broken. The opener simply no longer knows about that device, and reprogramming it puts things back.
How you can tell: Everything you reprogrammed works, and one specific device does nothing at all. Usually discovered days later at an inconvenient moment.
- Reprogram the missing device the normal way: press and release Learn, then activate the device within about thirty seconds.
- For an in-car button, remember it needs the vehicle-side training from a handheld remote first if it was cleared at that end too. If only the opener was cleared, the car still holds the code and you need only the Learn step.
- For a keypad, press and release Learn, then enter your PIN at the keypad and press the confirming key if your model uses one.
- Check the memory has room. If you reprogrammed several devices, you may now be near the limit again.
- Update your written list so this doesn't repeat next time.

When a reset isn't the answer at all

If the motor runs and the door doesn't move, the trolley is disconnected or the drive gear has stripped. And if the unit is completely dead, there's nothing to reset because nothing is running.

Things not to do — and why
It's instant and irreversible, and it takes all of them at once. In-car buttons are the ones people forget, and you find out in a driveway on a day when you had somewhere to be.
It removes authorized devices. That's all it does. An opener that's stopping in the wrong place or throwing a code will do exactly the same thing afterwards, except now nothing can operate it.
It doesn't. The lost remote stays on the list and keeps working. Emptying the list is the only thing that removes it, which is precisely why the function exists.
The routine cycles the door repeatedly under power. With weak or broken springs, every one of those cycles drives the full weight through the opener and shreds the nylon drive gear.
That test is the last line of defense between the door and whatever is beneath it. A door that fails it shouldn't be left in service, whatever else you've adjusted.
Codes report real conditions on real circuits. Cutting power clears the display and leaves the cause exactly where it was, which usually means a repeat performance at a worse moment.
The radio memory and any connected-app registration are separate things. Clearing one leaves the other alone, and both need dealing with when a house changes hands.
