How to Open Your Garage Door During a Power Outage — and Reconnect It After
Monsoon season takes the power out often enough here that this comes up every summer. Every garage door opener has a manual release — that red cord dangling from the rail — which disconnects the door so you can lift it by hand. Using it is straightforward. What almost nobody explains is how to put it back, and that's where most of the confusion lands: people get the car out during an outage, power comes back, and now the opener runs happily while the door sits there doing nothing. This page covers both halves properly. It also covers the one situation where pulling that cord is genuinely dangerous, so read the next section before you touch anything.
This is general guidance based on what we see on service calls — it isn’t a substitute for someone looking at your actual door. Every door is a little different, and if anything here feels beyond what you want to take on, stop and give us a call.
Before you pull the cord — check this first
On a healthy door the release is perfectly routine. On a door with a broken spring it is not, and the difference matters enormously.
- Look at the spring on the shaft above the door. A broken torsion spring shows a clear gap of an inch or two in the coil.
- On extension-spring doors, look along the tracks for a spring that's gone slack or come apart.
- Check whether a lift cable is hanging loose, frayed, or has come off its drum.
- Notice whether the door is sitting crooked in its opening.
- Think back — did you hear a loud bang recently, even days ago?
The springs carry nearly all of your door's weight. The release cord disconnects the door from the opener, so whatever the springs aren't holding, you are — and that's 150 to 250 pounds. With a healthy spring the door feels like about ten pounds. With a broken one it feels like a car. Four things before you start pulling on anything.

1Check the spring above the door
Take a flashlight and look at the shaft above the opening. You want an unbroken coil with no visible gap. This is the single most important check on this page.
You’ll know it worked when: The spring is continuous with no gap, and the cables on both sides are taut.

2Close the door first if it's partway open
Releasing a partly open door means it can drop as the connection lets go. Bring it down under opener power first if you still have any. If you don't, and you're not certain the springs are sound, leave it where it is and call us — don't stand under it to release it.

3Check whether you actually have battery backup
Many newer openers have one, and if yours does you may not need the manual release at all. Try the wall button — if the opener responds and the door moves, you're on battery and you're fine.

4Make sure the manual lock isn't engaged
Some doors have a slide lock or a handle lock. If that's thrown, the door won't move by hand no matter what you do with the release, and forcing it can bend things.

Understanding this makes both halves obvious, and it explains why reconnecting has a knack to it.
Your door is pulled along the rail by the trolley — a sliding block that the chain or belt drags back and forth. The trolley connects to your door through the door arm, the bent metal bar running down to the top panel.
That connection is a spring-loaded latch, and the red cord is what releases it. Pull the cord and the latch opens, the door arm drops free of the trolley, and the door is now independent of the opener entirely. You can lift it by hand, and the opener can run without moving it.
Here's the part that catches people out. To re-latch, the trolley has to physically line up with the door arm's connection point — and that alignment only happens when the door is fully closed. If the door is even a few inches open, the trolley will travel right past the arm without engaging, which is exactly the frustrating loop people get stuck in.
The other thing worth knowing is that the release does not make the door lighter. The springs are what carry the weight, and they're a completely separate system that the cord doesn't touch. On a healthy door you'll be lifting about ten pounds. On a door with a broken spring you'll be lifting the whole thing — which is why the check at the top of this page matters more than any of the steps below.
So: pull the cord to disconnect, and close the door fully before trying to reconnect. That second point is the whole trick.

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
Using the release to open the door
Hands-on — moderate riskThe standard procedure, and genuinely simple once you've done it once. The main things to get right are checking the spring first and being deliberate about whether the door is closed or partway open when you release it.
How you can tell: Power is out, the opener won't respond, and you need the door open.
- Check the spring above the door for a gap, and check both cables are taut. If anything looks wrong, stop here and call.
- If the door is partway open, either bring it fully down first or get a second person to help support it before releasing.
- Find the red cord hanging from the trolley on the rail.
- Pull it straight down firmly. You'll feel and usually hear the latch release.
- Lift the door by hand with both hands, evenly, from the bottom. It should feel like around ten pounds and move smoothly.
- Lift it fully open — a door left partway can drift, and a door left partway with any spring weakness can drop.
- If the door won't stay open on its own, don't leave anyone or anything underneath it.

Getting the door back down and secure
Hands-on — moderate riskWorth its own section because leaving a disconnected door open is a real security issue — anyone outside can simply lift it. Bringing it down is the reverse of lifting it, with the same caution about weight.
How you can tell: You've got the car out and want the house secure while the power is still off.
- Lower the door with both hands, evenly, controlling the speed the whole way. Don't let it run down.
- Keep your fingers away from the panel joints — they close as the door comes down and they pinch hard.
- Once it's closed, engage the manual slide lock if your door has one. A disconnected door with no lock can be lifted from outside.
- If there's no slide lock, a clamp or locking pliers on the track just above a roller will stop it being lifted.
- Remember to remove that clamp before reconnecting the opener, or the opener will fight it.
You’ll know it’s right when: The door is fully closed and can't be lifted from outside.
Reconnecting after the power comes back
Basic checkThe half nobody explains, and the reason we get calls that turn out to be nothing. The trolley can only re-latch onto the door arm when the two are aligned, and that alignment only exists with the door fully closed. Try it with the door partway open and the trolley slides straight past, over and over, which is maddening if you don't know why.
How you can tell: Power is back, the opener runs its full cycle, and the door sits completely still.
- Close the door fully by hand first. This is the whole trick — it will not latch otherwise.
- Remove any clamp or locking pliers you put on the track, and disengage any manual slide lock.
- Pull the red cord toward the door rather than straight down. This resets the release lever — on most units you'll hear or feel a click into the ready position.
- Press the wall button and run a normal cycle. The trolley will travel along the rail and latch onto the door arm automatically, usually with an audible click.
- Cycle the door once completely to confirm it's properly engaged and moving with the opener.
- If the trolley passes without latching, close the door fully by hand again and repeat — nine times out of ten that's the issue.

The door is too heavy to lift by hand
High risk — call a technicianIf you've released the door and it's a genuine struggle to lift, the outage has just revealed a problem that was already there. Your opener has been quietly compensating for weakening springs, possibly for months, and you'd never have known until the power went out and you had to feel the real weight yourself.
How you can tell: The door needs real effort to lift, drops when you let go, or won't stay where you put it. A healthy door feels like about ten pounds and holds position anywhere.
The release cord or lever has failed
Hands-on — moderate riskOccasionally the cord itself is the problem — it snaps, or the knot pulls through, or it comes away from the lever entirely. Sun exposure through a garage window makes the plastic cord brittle over years, and ours get more of that than most.
How you can tell: The cord came off in your hand, or pulling it does nothing at all because the lever isn't moving.
- Look up at the trolley — if you can see the release lever, you may be able to reach it directly with a stepladder and operate it by hand.
- Some trolleys have a lever you can pull toward the door manually without the cord.
- If you can release it that way, you can get the door open now and deal with the cord afterwards.
- Replacement cords are inexpensive and available for most models — worth fitting a proper one rather than tying on any old rope.
You’ll know it’s right when: You've released the door, or established that you can't and need help.
You have battery backup and may not need any of this
Basic checkWorth checking before you go anywhere near the cord. Many openers made in the last decade or so include a battery backup, which keeps the door working through an outage. If yours has one and it's healthy, you can simply use the door normally.
How you can tell: Press the wall button during the outage. If the opener responds and the door moves, you're running on battery.
- Try the wall button before assuming you need the manual release.
- If it works, use the door sparingly — most backups give around 20 cycles before it's spent, which matches the 20-cycle/30-hour figure the manufacturers publish.
- Expect the opener to beep periodically while on battery. That's it telling you the mains is out, not a fault.
- If the battery is flat and won't run the door, fall back to the manual release in cause 1.
- After the outage, check the battery's status LED — a long outage is a deep discharge, and deep cycling shortens sealed lead-acid life.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself
- A flashlight — outages are dark, and you need to see the spring clearly before pulling anything
- A second person — genuinely worth it if the door is partway open when you release it
- A C-clamp or locking pliers — to secure a disconnected door in the closed position if there's no slide lock
- A stepladder — only if the cord has failed and you need to reach the lever directly
Things not to do — and why
The cord disconnects the door from the opener. It doesn't make the door lighter — the springs do that, and if one is broken, releasing means taking 150 to 250 pounds yourself with nothing to help. This is the most serious warning on this page.
A door that's up has further to fall and more momentum when it gets there. Bring it down under opener power first if you can, or have someone help support it.
The trolley can only latch in one position, and that position only exists with the door fully closed. You'll cycle it repeatedly with nothing happening and conclude something's broken when nothing is.
You'd be attaching a motor designed to add ten pounds of push to a door that needs two hundred. The nylon drive gear absorbs that difference and fails, usually within months.
With the opener disconnected, anyone outside can simply lift the door. Use the manual slide lock, or clamp the track above a roller until you reconnect.
A cord that hangs too low gets caught by roof racks and tall vehicles, which disconnects the door without anyone noticing. Fit a proper replacement at the right length.
Most backups give somewhere near 20 cycles — LiftMaster and Chamberlain rate theirs at 20 cycles or 30 hours of standby, and deep discharge shortens the battery's remaining life. Use it for what you actually need.
It's where hands go once a door is a foot off the ground, and it's the one spot DASMA names outright as unsuitable — the joint closes as the door moves. Handles or gripping points belong on the face of the second or third section, near its bottom edge. Some are recessed rather than raised, so feel for them before deciding there aren't any.
Why this comes up so often here
Monsoon season means real outages, and often at the least convenient moment — evening storms, everyone home, cars in the garage. We get a run of these calls every July and August, and a good share of them turn out to be a disconnected trolley rather than anything broken.
There's also a seasonal trap worth knowing about. A door that has been perfectly fine all year can reveal itself as heavy the first time you actually lift it by hand — because your opener has been quietly compensating for springs that weakened over a hot summer. The outage doesn't cause the problem; it's just the first time you've felt it.
- Monsoon outages are common — worth knowing the release procedure before you need it in the dark.
- Backup batteries die faster here — a sealed battery living near the ceiling of a 130°F garage often gives one to three years rather than three to five. Test yours before storm season.
- Springs weaken in the heat, so the door you lift during an outage may be heavier than you expect. If it is, that's information worth acting on.
- Surges take out openers — sometimes the power comes back and the opener doesn't. A surge protector on the opener circuit is cheap insurance.
- Practice before summer — genuinely worth releasing and reconnecting once on a calm afternoon so you're not learning it by flashlight during a storm.
Being ready for the next one
Fifteen minutes on a quiet afternoon saves a lot of stress in a storm.
- Practise the release and reconnect once on a calm day with the lights on. It's much easier to learn now than by flashlight with a car to get out.
- Do the balance test twice a year — release the door, lift by hand, check it stays put. It tells you what you'd be lifting in an outage, and it catches weakening springs early.
- Test your battery backup before monsoon season — unplug the opener briefly and confirm the door still runs. Better to find a dead battery in May than in July.
- Keep a flashlight in the garage — not in the car that's stuck behind the door.
- Check the release cord annually — sun makes them brittle. Replace it before it snaps rather than after.
- Fit a surge protector on the opener circuit — it protects the logic board when power comes back after a storm.
- Know where your manual lock is so you can secure a disconnected door without improvising.
What this sometimes uncovers
An outage is often the first time someone feels their door's real weight.
If the door was hard to lift during the outage, that's worth following up even after the power's back and everything seems normal again. Your opener will keep compensating right up until it doesn't.
When to call us
Call if the door is too heavy to lift safely, if you can see a broken spring or a loose cable, if the release cord has failed and you can't reach the lever, if the trolley won't re-latch after several tries with the door fully closed, or if the opener didn't survive the outage. No. A properly balanced door feels like roughly ten pounds and stays wherever you stop it. If yours is a struggle, the springs aren't carrying the weight properly and your opener has been quietly making up the difference — possibly for months. Don't reconnect the opener to it, because that's how drive gears get destroyed. Worth getting looked at.
Only as long as you need to. A disconnected door can be lifted by anyone outside, so if you're leaving it closed, engage the manual slide lock or clamp the track above a roller. And reconnect once the power's back rather than leaving it — it's easy to forget, and then you're wondering why the opener runs and the door doesn't. If the trolley won't re-engage cleanly, leave it and book the garage door opener repair.
Two likely causes. A tripped GFCI outlet — openers are often on one, and surges or moisture will trip it while the rest of the house is fine, so check that first because it's free. Or surge damage to the logic board, which we see a distinct cluster of after monsoon storms. A surge protector on the opener circuit is worth fitting either way.
You can, but it's the version to avoid if there's any alternative. A released door that's up is held by nothing but its springs, and if those are at all weak it can come down fast — which is why every manufacturer's manual says to use the release only with the door closed. If you still have opener power, bring the door down first and release it there. If you don't, and the door is up and you're unsure about the springs, leave it and call us rather than standing under it.
The red one hanging off the trolley on the rail. UL 325 requires that handle to be red and, in the standard's own words, easily distinguishable from the rest of the operator system — precisely so nobody has to work it out by feel in a dark garage. The color carries a second meaning worth knowing while you're up there. DASMA's opener guide tells homeowners not to loosen any bottom brackets, red colored fasteners, cables or supports. Red on the rail means pull. Red down at the door means leave it alone.
