Garage Door Remote Not Working? Start With These Four Things
A remote that's stopped working is one of the more satisfying problems on this site, because it's usually cheap, usually quick, and almost never means anything is wrong with your door. The important thing to establish early is whether the remote does nothing at all or whether it works but only from very close — those point in different directions. And there are two causes almost nobody checks: a lock button somebody pressed by accident, and the LED bulbs you put in the opener last year. Both are more common than a genuinely dead remote.
This is general guidance based on what we see on service calls — it isn’t a substitute for someone looking at your actual door. Every door is a little different, and if anything here feels beyond what you want to take on, stop and give us a call.

1Try the wall button
If the wall button opens the door normally, your opener and your door are both fine and this is purely a remote problem — which is good news. If the wall button doesn't work either, you've got a different and bigger issue.

2Look for a lock light on the wall panel
Most modern wall controls have a Lock or Vacation button that deliberately disables every remote while leaving the wall button working. It's easy to press by accident and endlessly interesting to kids. Hold it for about two seconds to toggle it off.

3Change the battery — even if it seems fine
Remote batteries fade rather than fail outright. A battery with some charge left will still light the little LED on the remote while no longer having the punch to transmit at range. The LED lighting up tells you almost nothing.

4Test from up close, then from the driveway
Stand right under the opener and press. Then walk back to where you normally use it. Works up close but not at distance is a range problem, and range problems have their own causes.

Your remote is a small radio transmitter. It sends a coded signal on a specific frequency, the opener's receiver hears it, checks the code, and acts. Simple enough — but two details explain most of what goes wrong.
The first is rolling code security. Modern openers don't use a fixed code, because a fixed code can be captured and replayed by anyone with a cheap scanner. Instead the remote and opener share an algorithm and agree on a new code every single press. This is genuinely good security, and it's why a remote has to be paired to an opener rather than just set to the right frequency. It's also why a remote can lose its pairing after a power surge or a board reset, and then do absolutely nothing despite having a perfectly good battery.
The second is that this all happens at low power. A garage door remote transmits a weak signal by design — it doesn't need to reach far and regulations limit it anyway. That low power is why range is fragile: a battery at 80% still lights the remote's LED but may not push the signal to the end of the driveway, and why relatively minor radio noise nearby can swamp it.
Which brings us to LED bulbs. Cheap LED bulbs generate broadband radio interference as a side effect of their switching power supply, and if that bulb is sitting inside the opener housing — inches from the receiver's antenna — it can drown out a remote from across the garage. This catches out a lot of people, because the timing rarely lines up in their memory: you change the bulbs, everything's fine for a while, and then you notice you have to be closer to the door than you used to be.
So: nothing at all points at pairing, battery, or lock mode. Short range points at battery, antenna, or interference.

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
Lock mode is switched on
Basic checkCheck this first because it's free, it takes five seconds, and it's genuinely common. Most modern wall controls have a Lock or Vacation button whose entire job is to disable every remote while leaving the wall button working — a real security feature for when you're away. It's also placed where a shoulder, a broom handle, or a curious child will find it, and the resulting symptom looks exactly like every remote dying simultaneously.
How you can tell: The wall button works perfectly, no remote does, and there's usually a small lit indicator on the wall panel.
- Look at the wall control panel for a Lock or Vacation button, often with a padlock icon.
- Check whether its indicator light is on.
- Press and hold that button for about two seconds. The indicator should go out and you may hear a click from the opener.
- Test a remote.
You’ll know it’s right when: The lock indicator is off and your remotes work again.
The battery is weak — even if it looks fine
Basic checkThe most common single cause, and the one most often dismissed because the remote's little LED still lights up. That LED needs a tiny fraction of the current the transmitter does. A battery can comfortably light the LED while no longer having the punch to push a signal thirty feet. So a lit LED does not mean a good battery — it's close to meaningless as a test.
How you can tell: Range that's been shrinking over weeks, or a remote that works if you're right at the door. Also any remote more than a year or two old that's started being unreliable.
- Slide or unclip the remote open — most use a small tab or a single screw.
- Note the battery type. Most are CR2032 coin cells or A23 12V cylinders.
- Fit a fresh one, matching polarity. Coin cells are usually positive-side-up but check before you pull the old one.
- Snap it back together and test from your normal distance, not from under the opener.
- If you have several remotes, do them all — they're usually the same age.

The remote has lost its programming
Basic checkBecause modern openers use rolling codes, each remote is paired to the opener rather than simply tuned to it. That pairing lives in the opener's memory, and it can be lost — a power surge, a board reset, or somebody holding the Learn button down for too long while adding a different remote. The remote itself is fine; the opener just no longer recognizes it.
How you can tell: A fresh battery makes no difference, lock mode is off, and the remote does nothing from any distance.
- Find the Learn button on the opener head. It's usually under the light cover or behind a panel on the back, and it's colored — the color tells you the security generation.
- Press and release the Learn button. Do not hold it. Holding it for several seconds erases every remote, keypad and in-car button you own.
- Within about 30 seconds, press the button on your remote once.
- The opener light will flash, or you'll hear a click, confirming it's paired.
- Test the remote from a normal distance.
- Repeat for each remote you want paired.
You’ll know it’s right when: The opener acknowledged the pairing and the remote works.
The opener's receiver or board has failed
High risk — call a technicianIf no remote will program, the Learn button produces no response at all, and the wall button still works, the radio receiver has likely failed. On most modern openers that receiver is part of the logic board rather than a separate module. Surges are the usual cause, which is why we see these cluster after monsoon storms.
How you can tell: Fresh batteries, lock mode off, and the Learn button produces no response from any remote. Wall button unaffected.
The opener's antenna is damaged or tucked away
Basic checkThere's a thin wire hanging down from the opener housing, and it isn't decoration — it's the receiving antenna. People tuck it up out of sight because it looks untidy, coil it around the housing, or catch it with a ladder. Any of those cuts range dramatically, and because the change is gradual as batteries also age, it often gets blamed on the remote.
How you can tell: Range is poor from all remotes, including ones with fresh batteries. Often follows tidying up, painting, or any work near the ceiling.
- Look at the opener housing for a thin wire, usually a few inches to a foot long.
- Make sure it hangs straight down, freely, not coiled or taped up against the metal housing.
- Check it isn't cut, kinked, or pinched.
- If it's been cut short, an antenna extension is available for most models and is inexpensive.
- Test range again from the driveway.

LED bulbs in the opener are jamming the signal
Basic checkThis is the cause almost nobody checks, and it's real enough that Genie sells a bulb specifically rated for garage door openers. Inexpensive LED bulbs produce broadband radio interference as a by-product of their switching power supply. Put one inside the opener housing — a few inches from the receiver — and it can swamp a low-power remote signal completely. The classic pattern is someone replaced the opener bulbs with LEDs, everything seemed fine, and gradually they noticed they were having to get closer to the door.
How you can tell: Range dropped after changing the opener's light bulbs. Or: try the remote with the opener light off versus on — if range is noticeably better with the light off, you've found it.
- Test the remote from the driveway while the opener light is off, then trigger the light and test again from the same spot.
- If range is clearly worse with the light on, the bulb is your problem.
- Swap for a bulb specifically rated as garage-door-opener compatible, or go back to an incandescent rough-service bulb.
- Retest from your normal distance.
- Worth also considering other new electronics in the garage — cheap chargers, LED shop lights and some smart devices can do the same thing.
You’ll know it’s right when: Range returns to normal with the new bulb.
The opener's memory is full, or the remote is the wrong generation
Basic checkTwo separate problems that both show up when you're trying to add a new remote rather than fix an existing one. Openers hold a limited number of paired devices — Capacity varies more than people expect: an entry-level Chamberlain or Craftsman holds around 8 remotes, a LiftMaster Contractor 12, a Premium 24, and an Elite as many as 40. Keypads sit in their own separate slots rather than eating into that total. Once full, the opener simply won't accept another. Separately, a remote has to match your opener's security generation; a remote from the right brand but the wrong era will pair with nothing.
How you can tell: An existing remote works fine but a new one won't program, or the opener seems to accept the new remote and then forgets it.
- Count everything paired to the opener: every handheld remote, every keypad, and every car button you've programmed.
- Before you assume the memory is full, check what your model actually holds. The ceiling depends entirely on the model: about 8 remotes on an entry-level Chamberlain or Craftsman, 12 on a LiftMaster Contractor, 24 on a Premium, and as many as 40 on an Elite. A keypad takes its own slot and doesn't reduce that number.
- To clear it, press and hold the Learn button until its indicator goes out — usually about six seconds. This erases everything.
- Then reprogram each device you actually use, one at a time.
- For a compatibility problem, check your opener's Learn button color and match the remote to that generation. The color is the quickest indicator of which system you have.
- If you're buying a universal remote, check the packaging explicitly lists your opener's security system.

Genie's system is called Intellicode, and the programming button is usually marked Program or Learn Code on the powerhead.

Craftsman & older units
Most Craftsman openers were Chamberlain-built and follow those procedures. Genuinely old units may use dip switches instead of rolling codes.

Things not to do — and why
A quick press and release pairs a device. Holding it for several seconds erases every remote, keypad and in-car button you've ever programmed — turning a two-minute job into an afternoon of reprogramming everything.
The LED draws a tiny fraction of what the transmitter does. A battery can light it convincingly while being far too weak to reach the opener from the driveway.
It looks untidy, but it's the receiving antenna. Coiling or taping it against the metal housing cuts your range dramatically.
A remote from the right brand but the wrong era pairs with nothing. Check your Learn button's color first and make sure the packaging lists that system.
In-car HomeLink buttons are the ones people forget. You'll only discover it the next time you drive up to a door that no longer knows you.
Fixed-code remotes from the pre-1993 era can be copied by anyone with cheap equipment. If your opener still uses them, that's worth a conversation about upgrading.
What's different about remotes here
Two climate factors shorten the life of remotes and their batteries in the Phoenix area, and one of them catches people out every summer.
Coin cell batteries lose capacity in heat, and a remote clipped to a car visor spends its summer in a vehicle that regularly passes 150°F inside. That's brutal on a CR2032. If your visor remote fails while the one in the kitchen drawer keeps working, the car is why — and it's normal rather than a defect.
- Visor remotes die faster — a parked car here cooks the battery. Expect noticeably shorter life than the spare kept indoors.
- Heat and the receiver — the opener's logic board and receiver sit near the ceiling, the hottest part of an already-hot garage. Electronics age faster up there.
- Monsoon surges — storm-season surges clear remote pairings and occasionally take out receivers. If several remotes stopped after a storm, reprogramming often fixes it.
- Keep a spare indoors — a remote kept in the house lasts considerably longer and gives you a known-good unit to test against when something goes wrong.
- Battery date codes matter — a coin cell that's sat in a hot shop for a year is already partly gone. Buy from somewhere with turnover.
Keeping remotes reliable
Small habits that prevent most of these calls.
- Change remote batteries annually rather than waiting for failure. They're cheap, and it removes the most common cause entirely.
- Keep one spare remote indoors — it lasts far longer out of the heat, and it's a known-good unit for testing when something goes wrong.
- Leave the antenna wire hanging free — resist the urge to tidy it away. It costs you nothing to leave it alone.
- Use opener-rated bulbs — if you're putting LEDs in the opener, buy ones specifically rated for garage door openers. It avoids a range problem that's hard to diagnose later.
- Note your Learn button color somewhere you'll find it. It saves a trip up the ladder next time you buy a remote or keypad.
- Fit a surge protector on the opener circuit — it protects the receiver and board through monsoon season.
How a remote usually fails
Remotes degrade before they die, and the stage you're at points straight at the fix.
If every remote in the house went at once, skip the whole sequence. That's the opener, not the remotes.
When it's worth calling us
Honestly, most remote problems don't need us — a battery and a reprogram covers the large majority, and we'd rather you save the money. Call if the Learn button produces no response at all, if nothing will program after a storm, if you've got an older dip-switch opener you'd like to bring up to modern security, or if you'd simply rather have it sorted than spend an afternoon on it.

What this tends to cost
This is at the inexpensive end of garage door problems, and often it costs you nothing but a battery. What moves the number if we do come out:
- Whether it's programming or a part Pairing remotes is quick. Supplying new remotes or a keypad adds parts.
- How many devices need pairing One remote is fast; several remotes plus keypads plus in-car buttons takes longer.
- Whether the receiver failed On most modern openers the receiver is part of the logic board, which is the expensive component.

If it's a rolling-code unit with a failed receiver and it's past fifteen years, the board cost often makes replacement the better spend. If it's a newer opener, repair almost always wins.
