Pressed the Learn Button and the Remote Still Won't Pair?
This page assumes you already know the procedure. You found the Learn button, you pressed and released it, you pressed the remote inside the window, and the opener sat there like nothing happened. That failure is more informative than it looks, because it rules out a whole category of problems and leaves a short list. Either the opener has nowhere to put the new remote, or it can't understand what the remote is saying, or it never heard it at all. Working out which of those three you're in takes about ten minutes and usually doesn't cost anything.

Four checks that between them resolve most failed pairings. Do them before you start erasing anything.

1Confirm the opener acknowledged the Learn press
Pressing Learn should produce something — an LED next to the button lighting, the opener's main light coming on, or a click. If pressing Learn produces absolutely nothing, the pairing was never going to work, because the opener never entered learn mode. That's a different problem and it's covered in cause 3.

2Fit a fresh battery, even in a new remote
New remotes sit on a shelf for a long time and the battery goes flat in the packet. A weak battery gives an opener enough to see the LED light on the remote and not enough to actually reach the receiver. It's the cheapest thing to rule out and it's wrong more often than it should be.

3Stand right underneath the opener
Program at arm's length from the powerhead, not from the driveway. Pairing needs a clean signal, and a marginal transmitter that would work at range on a good day may not manage it through whatever is in the way. If it pairs up close and won't work at distance, that's a range problem rather than a pairing one.

4Check the Learn button color
On LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers the color tells you the security generation — yellow is Security+ 2.0, purple is Security+, red or orange is Billion Code, and green or gray is older still. Compare it to what the remote's packaging says it works with. A mismatch here is the single most common reason a brand new remote refuses to pair.
You’ll know it worked when: You know your opener's learn button color and whether the remote claims compatibility with it.
Did the opener hear the remote at all?
This splits the problem cleanly. It relies on the fact that a working remote paired to a working opener will do something even if the door doesn't move.
If you have another remote that already works with this opener, use it as a control. A working remote proves the receiver is alive, which immediately moves the suspicion to the new remote or the pairing itself.

Four things have to be true simultaneously, and a failure in any one of them looks identical from where you're standing.
First, the opener has to be in learn mode. A short press and release of the Learn button opens an admission window, usually around thirty seconds, during which the opener will accept and store the next valid transmission it hears. Holding that same button for several seconds does something entirely different — it erases every remote, keypad and vehicle button ever paired to the unit. Same button, opposite outcomes, and no confirmation prompt in between.
Second, the remote has to actually transmit. That means a battery with enough current behind it, clean contacts, and a transmitter circuit that still works. Visor remotes in this climate live inside cars parked outside in July, and that is a genuinely hostile environment for a small circuit board and a coin cell.
Third, the two devices have to be speaking the same language. Garage door remotes have gone through several generations of security coding, and they're not fully cross-compatible. On LiftMaster and Chamberlain units the Learn button is color-coded to tell you which generation you have: yellow for Security+ 2.0, purple for Security+, red or orange for Billion Code, and green or gray for the older systems. A remote built for one generation will often simply be ignored by an opener from another. Genie's Intellicode system is a separate family again, and Genie pairings frequently require two presses of the remote where a LiftMaster wants one.
Fourth, the opener has to have somewhere to put it. Look up your own model before assuming anything — an entry-level Chamberlain or Craftsman tops out near 8 remotes while a LiftMaster Elite handles 40, with the Contractor at 12 and the Premium at 24. Keypads are stored separately. That sounds generous until you count what's actually in there — three visor remotes, an outside keypad, two vehicles' built-in buttons, a keychain remote somebody has had for years. When the list is full, behavior varies by model: some refuse the new device outright, some silently drop the oldest one, and the second version is why people pair a new remote successfully and discover a week later that a different one has stopped working.
That's the whole system. If a pairing fails, one of those four is the reason.
Work through those four in order — mode, transmission, language, capacity — and you'll land on the answer without guessing.
Reading the failure
What the opener and the remote each do at the moment of the attempt narrows this quickly.

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
The opener's memory is full
Basic checkMore common than people expect, because nobody keeps a list. Capacity varies more than people expect: an entry-level Chamberlain or Craftsman holds around 8 remotes, a LiftMaster Contractor 12, a Premium 24, and an Elite as many as 40. Keypads sit in their own separate slots rather than eating into that total. What makes this frustrating is that models behave differently when they hit the ceiling — some refuse the new remote and give you no explanation, others quietly evict the oldest entry to make room. The second one is worse, because your pairing appears to succeed and a device you rely on stops working days later.
How you can tell: Count everything that has ever been paired: every visor remote, every keychain fob, the outside keypad, the built-in buttons in each vehicle, and anything an installer or a previous owner might have added. If you're near six, this is your cause. The other tell is a new pairing working while an older device mysteriously stops.
- Gather every remote and fob in the house, including ones in drawers, and note the keypad PIN if you have one.
- Erase the opener's memory: press and hold the Learn button until its indicator goes out, generally around six seconds. This deletes everything.
- Understand what you've just done — every remote, keypad and in-car button is now unpaired, including the ones that were working.
- Re-pair only the devices you actually use. Press and release Learn, then press the device's button within the admission window.
- For an outside keypad, follow your model's keypad routine rather than the remote routine — they differ.
- For a car's built-in buttons, re-run the vehicle's training procedure, which usually needs both the car and the opener's Learn button.
- Test each device from where you'd normally use it before you put the ladder away.

The remote is the wrong security generation
Basic checkThe most common reason a brand new remote refuses to pair, and it catches people who did everything else right. Rolling-code security has gone through several generations, and they aren't fully interchangeable. An opener will simply ignore a transmission it doesn't recognize as valid, which from the outside is indistinguishable from a dead remote. Universal remotes help but not universally — they cover a lot of generations and brands, and some still need a specific programming sequence rather than the standard one.
How you can tell: On LiftMaster and Chamberlain, look at the color of the Learn button. Yellow means Security+ 2.0, purple means Security+, red or orange means Billion Code, and green or gray is older again. Compare that against what the remote's packaging or listing says it's compatible with. On Genie, the system is Intellicode and it's a different family entirely.
- Take the light cover off the opener and note the Learn button's color.
- Note the opener's model number from the sticker while you're up there.
- Check the remote's packaging or product listing against both. A remote that doesn't name your generation probably won't work with it.
- If it's a universal remote, find its instruction sheet — many need a brand or generation selected first, sometimes by holding a specific button combination.
- On a Genie, expect the pairing to want two presses of the remote where a LiftMaster wants one. A single press often looks like a failed pairing when it's actually an incomplete one.
- If the generations genuinely don't match, return the remote and buy one specified for your opener rather than trying to force it.

The Learn button isn't doing anything
Hands-on — moderate riskIf pressing Learn produces no response at all — no LED, no light, no click — the opener never entered learn mode, and no amount of pressing the remote afterward will help. Sometimes this is simply the wrong button: powerheads often have several, and a Learn button can be tucked behind the light lens, under a removable panel, or on the back of the unit facing the wall. Sometimes the button itself has failed. The rubber and contact under those buttons degrades with heat, and an opener that has spent fifteen summers near a Phoenix garage ceiling has had a hard time of it.
How you can tell: You press it firmly and the opener does nothing whatsoever. Compare that against what your manual says should happen — most units light an LED beside the button or turn the main light on.
- Unplug the opener before you go poking around the head, then plug it back in when you're ready to test.
- Take the light cover off properly. On many models the Learn button is genuinely hidden and people give up before finding it.
- Check your manual's diagram for your exact model rather than a generic one. Button placement moves between generations.
- Make sure you're pressing the Learn button rather than an adjustment or limit button. Pressing the wrong one can start a travel-limit routine you didn't intend.
- Press firmly and squarely. A degraded button sometimes responds to a deliberate press when a light tap does nothing.
- If it responds intermittently, that's a failing button rather than a mystery — worth replacing before it fails completely.

The remote isn't transmitting
Basic checkEasy to rule out and frequently the answer. A remote needs a battery with real current behind it, not just enough voltage to light its own indicator. That's an important distinction: a nearly flat coin cell will happily light the LED and fail to power the transmitter. Add the corrosion that happens where contacts meet a battery that's been in there for years, and add what a summer in a parked car does to a visor remote, and you have three separate ways for a remote to look fine and do nothing.
How you can tell: The remote's own indicator doesn't light, or lights weakly. Or it lights normally and nothing at all reaches the opener even from directly beneath it. A remote that used to work at range and now only works up close is on its way out.
- Open the remote and fit a fresh battery — usually a CR2032 or an A23, and it's worth checking rather than assuming.
- Look at the contacts. Green or white crust means corrosion; clean it off gently with a pencil eraser or a cotton bud and a little isopropyl alcohol.
- Check the battery is seated the right way round and makes firm contact. Contact springs go soft with age.
- Look at the circuit board through the case for corrosion or heat damage. A visor remote that's cooked in a car all summer sometimes has visible damage.
- Try the remote directly under the opener. If it works there and nowhere else, the transmitter is weak rather than dead.
- If you have a second remote of the same type that works, that confirms the opener side is fine and the problem is this unit.
You’ll know it’s right when: The indicator lights brightly, and the opener responds from a normal operating distance after pairing.
It paired, but it only works up close
Basic checkWorth separating out, because this is a success being mistaken for a failure. If the remote works from directly beneath the opener but not from the driveway, the pairing took and you have a range problem instead. Range problems have a small number of causes, and two of them are things somebody did on purpose. The opener's antenna is a thin wire that's supposed to hang straight down from the powerhead, and it gets coiled up, tucked into the housing or cut off by people who think it looks untidy.
How you can tell: The door responds from a few feet away and not from where you'd actually use it. Or it worked at range last month and doesn't now, with nothing else having changed.
- Look at the antenna wire hanging from the opener. It should dangle freely and vertically, uncut and uncoiled.
- Untuck it if somebody has stuffed it into the housing, and straighten it if it's been coiled.
- Swap the opener's light bulbs for ones rated for garage door opener use. LED bulbs are a well-known source of radio interference and can cut remote range dramatically.
- Consider other new electronics nearby — a recently installed LED shop light or a wireless device can interfere.
- Check whether the remote works better from a different angle or with the car window down. Metal in the way absorbs signal.
- Fit a fresh battery even if you already did — a weak battery gives short range before it gives none.
You’ll know it’s right when: The remote works reliably from the end of the driveway, in the position you'd actually use it from.
Something is interfering during the pairing itself
Basic checkPairing is a fussier operation than everyday use. It needs a clean transmission received correctly the first time, and radio noise that everyday operation would shrug off can prevent a pairing from completing. LED bulbs inside the opener housing are the usual suspect — the switching drivers in cheap bulbs put out broadband noise right where the receiver is. Nearby wireless equipment, some LED shop lighting, and occasionally a neighbor's equipment can do the same thing.
How you can tell: Pairing fails repeatedly with a remote you have reason to believe is fine, or it works erratically — pairing on the fourth attempt for no apparent reason. Removing the opener's bulbs and trying again is the decisive test.
- Unplug the opener, remove both light bulbs, and let it sit for a moment.
- Plug it back in and attempt the pairing with no bulbs fitted.
- If it pairs, replace the bulbs with ones rated for garage door opener use rather than putting the old ones back.
- Turn off other electronics in the garage during the attempt — LED shop lights, battery chargers, anything with a switching supply.
- Attempt the pairing standing directly beneath the opener, holding the remote up toward it.
- If it still fails with everything off, interference isn't your cause and you can rule it out cleanly.
You’ll know it’s right when: The pairing completes reliably, and it stays reliable with the new bulbs fitted.
The receiver or the logic board has failed
High risk — call a technicianThe end of the list, reached by elimination rather than by a distinctive symptom. If no device will pair — including a remote that worked yesterday — and the Learn button responds normally, then the opener is entering learn mode and simply isn't hearing anything. The receiver circuit lives on the logic board, and boards fail. Heat is the slow version of that; monsoon surges are the fast one, and a receiver that stopped working the week after a storm is usually reporting surge damage rather than age.
How you can tell: Multiple devices, including known-good ones, all fail to pair. The wall button still works normally, which tells you the opener itself is functional and the radio side isn't. Often there was a storm or a power event shortly before.
It paired fine and lock mode is ignoring it
Basic checkThe one we always check, because it costs nothing and it explains a surprising number of these calls. Most wall consoles have a Lock or Vacation button that deliberately disables every remote while leaving the wall button working — a security feature for when the house is empty. It's easy to press by accident, children find it fascinating, and once it's on, a freshly paired remote does exactly nothing. From where you're standing, that's indistinguishable from a pairing that failed.
How you can tell: The wall button operates the door perfectly. No remote does anything, including ones that used to work. There's usually a small indicator light on the wall panel, though it isn't always obvious.
- Look at the wall console for a Lock or Vacation button and any small indicator light near it.
- Press and hold that button for about two seconds to toggle it off. The indicator should go out.
- Try a remote that was previously working before you re-attempt any pairing.
- If lock mode was the problem, you may find the remote was already paired successfully and doesn't need doing again.
- Check whether the console has a timer-to-close or other mode engaged while you're there — those cause their own confusion.
- If the console has no obvious lock button, check your manual. Implementation varies and some use a button combination.
You’ll know it’s right when: The lock indicator is off and your remotes work from normal distance.

Genie's Intellicode is a separate family with its own quirks, and one of them accounts for a lot of apparently failed pairings.

Craftsman & pre-1993 units
Most Craftsman openers were built by Chamberlain and share the color system above. Genuinely old openers work differently enough to be worth calling out.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself

Things not to do — and why
A short press and release opens the admission window. Holding it for several seconds erases every remote, keypad and in-car button on the opener. Same button, opposite results, and there's no confirmation prompt between them.
Once it's cleared, everything has to be re-paired — including the keypad, which needs its own routine, and your car's built-in buttons, which need the vehicle's procedure. Doing this on a weekday morning is a memorable mistake.
Security generations aren't fully cross-compatible, and an opener simply ignores a transmission it doesn't recognize. The color on the button is the fastest way to know what you need before you spend anything.
If it won't take after two honest attempts with a fresh battery, the fault is elsewhere. Repeated attempts on some models can clear other stored settings, and you'll have lost working devices chasing a broken one.
It's not decorative. That wire is the receiver's antenna and it needs to hang straight down. Coiling it or tucking it into the housing is one of the most common causes of a remote that pairs and then only works up close.
A wall console lock disables every remote while leaving the wall button working, which looks exactly like a failed pairing. Two seconds on the lock button rules it out.
Pair it, then operate the door from where you'd actually use it, with the doorway in view. A remote that works from under the opener and nowhere else isn't finished.
A remote that's gone missing is a key to your house sitting in an unknown car park. If one is genuinely lost, erase the memory and re-pair the rest — that's the situation the erase function exists for.
Why remotes have a harder life here
Remote failures cluster in summer around here and the reason is the parking situation rather than anything about the opener.
A visor remote clipped inside a car parked outside in Mesa in July sits in an interior that gets far hotter than the outside air — well past what the small circuit board and the coin cell inside it were designed for, for hours at a time, day after day. Batteries lose capacity fast under those conditions, plastic housings distort, and solder joints on cheap boards take a beating. Then there's the opener end: the powerhead hangs in the hottest air in the building, and the receiver circuitry and the Learn button's contact both age accordingly. It's why remote and pairing complaints have a season here.
- Visor remotes cook in parked cars — expect shorter battery and transmitter life than the manufacturer assumes, and don't be surprised by a remote that fails in its third summer.
- Keep a spare battery in the house — a flat coin cell is the single most common cause of a remote that won't pair, and shops are further away than a drawer.
- Outside keypads take direct sun — UV degrades the keypad face and heat gets into the housing. A shaded mounting position adds years.
- Monsoon surges take out receivers — if nothing will pair and there was a storm recently, that's usually the story rather than coincidence.
- Learn buttons degrade with heat — the rubber contact under the button ages, which is why some fifteen-year-old openers respond intermittently to a firm press and not at all to a light one.
- Surge protection is cheap insurance — the receiver lives on the logic board, and the board is the most expensive part in the opener.
Keeping this from happening again
Most of this is about knowing what's in the opener's memory and keeping the transmitters healthy.
- Keep a written list of paired devices — inside the electrical panel door works. It turns a full-memory mystery into a two-minute decision about what to remove.
- Replace remote batteries yearly — rather than waiting for failure. In this climate they don't last the way the packet suggests.
- Note your Learn button color somewhere — it's the one piece of information you need before buying any remote, and it means a ladder trip you only make once.
- Erase and re-pair when a remote goes missing — a lost remote is a key to your house. This is exactly what the erase function is for.
- Use bulbs rated for garage door openers — they interfere less with the receiver, which helps both pairing and everyday range.
- Leave the antenna wire alone — hanging straight down, uncut, untucked. It costs nothing and it's the most common self-inflicted range problem.
- Fit surge protection at the opener's outlet — the receiver is part of the logic board, and one monsoon storm is all it takes.
Where a failed pairing usually sits
Remote complaints fall into a sequence, and knowing which stage you're at saves working the wrong end of it.
If you're at the third step and the answer turns out to be full memory or lock mode, you never needed the fourth. Which is why both of those are worth ruling out before you erase anything.
When to hand it over
Call us if the Learn button produces no response at all, if no device will pair including ones that previously worked, if everything stopped after a storm, or if you've worked through this page and want a straight answer on whether the receiver is the problem. Also worth a call if the opener is old enough that compatible remotes are getting hard to find — that's a genuine consideration rather than an upsell. Either way you'll get the arithmetic before the remote and keypad replacement is booked.

This is one of the cheaper problems on the site, and quite often it costs nothing but a battery. What changes it:
- Whether it's a battery, a setting, or a part Lock mode and a flat battery cost nothing. We'd rather tell you that on the phone than come out for it. Neither is worth a remote and keypad replacement, and we'll say so before anyone drives out.
- Whether the remote is the right generation A mismatched remote is a return rather than a repair. The right one is an inexpensive part.
- Whether the Learn button has failed That's board work, which is a different order of job to fitting a remote.
- Whether the receiver has failed The receiver is part of the logic board, and the board is the most expensive single component in most openers.
- Whether an external receiver makes sense On some units an add-on receiver is a legitimate middle option between a board replacement and a new opener.
- The age of the opener Past fifteen years, with a failed board and remotes getting scarce, we'll say plainly if replacement is the better spend.

Your model number is on a sticker on the side or back of the motor housing, and it’s usually printed on the inside of the light cover too.

Questions we get asked about this
Four things have to line up: the opener has to enter learn mode, the remote has to actually transmit, the two have to use the same security generation, and the opener has to have a free memory slot. A failure in any one of them looks the same from the outside. Check the Learn button color against the remote's stated compatibility first — a generation mismatch is the most common answer for a new remote.
It's worth ruling out, but check your model's real capacity before you erase anything. Capacity varies a lot more than people expect — an entry-level Chamberlain holds around 8 remotes while a LiftMaster Elite holds as many as 40, with the Contractor at 12 and the Premium at 24. If you're nowhere near your model's limit, a full memory isn't your problem and erasing everything just costs you an afternoon of reprogramming.
On LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers it identifies the security generation. Yellow is Security+ 2.0, purple is Security+, red or orange is Billion Code, and green or gray is older still. A remote built for a different generation will usually just be ignored, which looks exactly like a broken remote. Check the color before you buy anything.
You erase every device paired to the opener — all the remotes, the keypad, and any built-in buttons in your cars. A short press and release opens the pairing window; holding for several seconds clears the memory. There's no confirmation prompt between them, so it's worth being deliberate about which one you're doing.
Then the pairing worked and you have a range problem instead. Check the antenna wire hanging from the powerhead — it should dangle straight down, uncut and uncoiled, and people tuck it away because it looks untidy. After that, swap the opener's bulbs for ones rated for garage door use, since LED bulbs are a well-documented source of interference.
Not any, though a good universal covers a lot of ground. They generally support several brands and generations, but you still need to check yours is on the list, and many need a brand or generation selected with a specific button sequence before the standard pairing routine will work. Read the sheet that comes with it rather than assuming the normal procedure applies.
Press and hold the Learn button until its indicator goes out, generally around six seconds. That deletes everything. Gather every remote and fob you want to keep, plus the keypad PIN and your car's programming instructions, before you do it — because all of them will need re-pairing afterward, and each type has its own routine.
Genie's Intellicode pairing frequently requires two presses of the remote where a LiftMaster wants one, and a single press looks identical to a failed attempt. Follow the sequence for your specific model. Also check that the remote is genuinely Intellicode-compatible — Genie is a separate family from the LiftMaster generations, and remotes don't cross over.
It's probably a dip switch system, which predates rolling codes. Open both the remote and the opener's receiver and you'll find a row of small switches in each. Set the remote's switches to match the opener's exactly, position for position. There's no pairing procedure — the matching pattern is the pairing. If the opener predates 1993 it may also have no photo eyes, which is worth thinking about separately.
Monsoon surges are hard on logic boards, and the radio receiver lives on the board. Either the receiver has been damaged or the stored memory was wiped. Try pairing a remote from scratch — if that works, the memory was cleared and you just need to re-pair everything. If nothing will pair while the wall button still works normally, the receiver has taken damage.
The indicator on a remote lights on very little current, so it can glow brightly while the transmitter has nothing left to send. Fit a genuinely fresh battery rather than one from the drawer. If that doesn't do it, check lock mode at the wall console — that disables every remote while leaving the wall button working, which is easy to mistake for a dead remote.
Not reliably. Depending on the model it will either refuse outright or evict the oldest stored device to make room, and the second one causes real confusion later. The clean fix is to erase the memory and re-pair only the devices you actually use — which usually turns out to be fewer than what was in there.
Not on its own. Work through the battery, the generation match, lock mode and the memory first — those account for most of these. If it comes down to a failed receiver on a unit past fifteen years, and compatible remotes are getting hard to source anyway, then replacement is a reasonable conversation. We'd rather have that conversation with the arithmetic in front of you than assert it. When sourcing gets that hard, garage door opener repair tends to be the better spend than another hunt for a compatible transmitter.
