Garage Door Opening By Itself? Here's What's Sending The Signal
You come home and the door is standing wide open. Or you're in the kitchen and you hear the motor start up with nobody in the garage. It feels like the house has developed a mind of its own, and homeowners are usually more rattled by this one than by any other opener fault we get called about — reasonably so, because an open garage is an open door to the house. The good news is that openers do not act at random. Something sent a command, and there is a short list of things capable of sending one. Work down that list and you will find it.
This is general guidance based on what we see on service calls — it isn’t a substitute for someone looking at your actual door. Every door is a little different, and if anything here feels beyond what you want to take on, stop and give us a call.
Treat this as a security problem while you're diagnosing it
Most causes here are harmless once you find them. Until you have found it, the door is opening at times you don't control, so handle the house accordingly.
- It has happened while you were away overnight or on a trip.
- You bought the house recently and don't know how many remotes or vehicles were ever paired to this opener.
- The keypad on the outside of the door still has a PIN you didn't set.
- There's an interior door from the garage into the house that isn't locked.
- It has happened repeatedly over a short period with no pattern you can explain.
You can't tell a radio fault from somebody with a working remote just by watching the door, and the two look identical from inside the house. Until you know which it is, lock the door between the garage and the house, don't leave car keys or garage remotes in an unlocked vehicle, and use the wall panel's lock or vacation mode overnight so no remote signal can operate the opener at all. Erasing the opener's memory and re-pairing only the remotes you can physically hold is the single most useful thing you can do on day one — it's covered in cause 6. 1Round up every remote in the house
Visor clips, the one in the junk drawer, the spare in the second car, the one your kid keeps in a backpack, the little keychain fob. Put them all on the counter where you can see them. A remote with a heavy object resting on the button, or a fob riding loose in a bag with keys pressed against it, will transmit for as long as it's held down.
You’ll know it worked when: Every remote you own is accounted for and sitting somewhere nothing can press it.

2Check the wall panel for the lock indicator
Turning lock or vacation mode on temporarily disables every remote and keypad while still letting the wall button work. It's a diagnostic as much as a security measure — if the door stops opening by itself while lock mode is on, the command is arriving by radio.

3Look at what's been added to the garage lately
A new LED shop light, a wireless doorbell, a security camera, a Wi-Fi extender, a driveway alarm, an electric gate opener. Anything that broadcasts or switches quickly can put noise on the frequency band the opener listens to. Unplug recent additions one at a time.

4Check your phone
Open whatever app is connected to the opener and look at the activity log and any schedules or automations. Many openers keep a timestamped history of every open and close, and it will often tell you plainly that the command came from a phone, a schedule, or a physical button.
You’ll know it worked when: You've read the activity log and know whether the openings show up as app commands or as button presses.
One test splits this cleanly in two
Almost every cause on this page is either a radio signal arriving from outside the opener, or an electrical fault inside it. This tells you which side of that line you're on before you waste an afternoon.
Lock mode isn't a fix and it's not meant to live permanently on — it disables your remotes too. Use it for a few days as a diagnostic and then turn it back off once you know which half of the page you're in.
The timing usually gives it away
“Opens by itself” turns out to be several different faults wearing the same coat. When it happens is often the strongest clue you have.
A visor remote or a vehicle's built-in button is transmitting once the car settles — something shifting onto it, or a button pad that's gone soft.

Your opener sits there doing one thing: waiting for a contact to close. That's it. Everything else is plumbing that leads to that moment.
There are three separate paths to it. The first is the pair of terminals the wall button is wired to — bridge those two screws with anything conductive and the opener runs, no code required. The second is the radio receiver, which listens on a fixed frequency band for a transmission it recognizes and then closes the same contact internally. The third, on newer units, is a network connection — a Wi-Fi radio or an add-on hub that lets an app, a schedule, or a voice assistant trigger the opener from anywhere in the world.
That third path is the one that has changed the character of this complaint over the last decade. It used to be that a door opening at 3 a.m. meant a radio problem. Now it might mean a routine somebody built in an app two years ago, running exactly as instructed, on a phone that isn't even in the house.
The radio side is worth understanding too, because it explains why neighbors used to trigger each other's doors and why they mostly don't any more. Older openers used a fixed code, set with a row of tiny dip switches inside the remote and matched inside the opener. There were a limited number of combinations, and two houses on the same street landing on the same one was not unusual. Modern openers use a rolling code: the remote and the opener agree on a new code every single press, following a sequence only those two devices know. A recorded signal is useless on the next press, and a neighbor's transmitter is just noise.
So the question underneath this whole page is really: which of those three paths is firing, and is something sending a legitimate command or is a contact closing on its own?
Once you've decided whether you're chasing a radio signal, a hardwired short, or an automation, the number of possible causes drops from seven to about two.
Match your pattern

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
A remote button is being pressed and nobody realizes it
Basic checkThis is the winner, by a distance. Remotes end up in places where things press on them: a fob at the bottom of a purse with a set of keys pinning the button, a visor clip that a folded sun shade leans against, a spare remote in a drawer under a stack of paperwork, a fob clipped to a dog lead hanging on a hook. Once the button is held, the remote transmits continuously until the battery gives out, and the opener responds every time it comes back into range or the signal wavers. Older remotes make this worse, because the rubber button pads soften with age and lose the crispness that used to make them spring back.
How you can tell: There's usually a physical correlation you can spot once you're looking for it. The door opens when a particular car pulls in, or when someone comes home with a particular bag, or shortly after somebody moves something in the garage. Gather every remote in one place, and if the openings stop, you have your answer without needing to know which one it was.
- Collect every remote and fob in the house, including the ones in vehicles and any spares you don't use.
- Take the battery out of each one and set them somewhere flat with nothing on top.
- Wait two or three days. If the door behaves, one of those remotes was the culprit.
- Put batteries back one at a time, a couple of days apart, until the trouble returns — that identifies the offender.
- Look closely at the suspect remote's buttons: a pad that stays depressed, feels spongy, or doesn't click is done. Replace the remote rather than nursing it.
- Check the vehicles too. Cars with built-in garage buttons in the mirror or overhead console can be triggered by a sun visor swinging up against them.

Radio interference on the opener's frequency
Basic checkGarage openers listen on shared, unlicensed radio bands, and they are not the only thing using them. A cheap LED bulb or shop light with a poorly filtered driver, a wireless doorbell, a baby monitor, a Wi-Fi extender, a driveway sensor, a CB or ham setup nearby, or a failing power supply on almost anything can put enough noise on that band to be misread as a valid signal. Nearby military or commercial transmitters occasionally do it too, which is why this can appear in one neighborhood and not the next. Interference more often causes a remote to stop working than to fire the door — but when it does trigger a door, it does it at hours nobody is awake for, which is exactly what makes people call.
How you can tell: No pattern to the timing, no correlation with anyone coming or going, and the openings often started around the same time as some new piece of electronics went into the garage or the house.
- Make a list of everything electrical that's been added or changed in the garage in the last few months, including light bulbs.
- Unplug or remove them one at a time, giving each change a couple of days before you judge it.
- Pay particular attention to LED bulbs in the opener itself. They sit inches from the receiver's antenna and they are the single most common interference source we run into.
- Check that the opener's antenna wire is hanging down freely and hasn't been coiled up, tucked into the housing, or wrapped around the rail. A poorly positioned antenna makes the receiver hunt harder and pick up more noise.
- If you suspect interference from outside the property, note the exact times it happens for a week — patterns tied to shift changes or commuting hours point outward.
You’ll know it’s right when: The openings stop after removing one specific device, and stay stopped for a week or more.
A neighbor's opener is on the same fixed code
Basic checkThis is the explanation everyone reaches for first, and it used to be right a lot of the time. On pre-rolling-code systems, the remote and the opener were matched by a row of small dip switches — physical toggles, a limited number of combinations, and no security beyond that. Two houses on a street landing on the same combination was common enough that installers used to deliberately scramble the switches. If both your opener and your neighbor's are old enough to work this way, their remote genuinely can open your door, and neither of you would ever know why.
How you can tell: The openings line up with a neighbor's comings and goings, and your opener is old — no rolling code, and the remote has a sliding cover over a bank of tiny switches. If your remote has dip switches, this is live. If it doesn't, this cause doesn't apply to you and you can move on.
- Open the battery compartment or the back of the remote and look for a row of small switches, usually eight to twelve of them.
- If they're there, change the pattern — flip several of them to a new arrangement and write the new pattern down.
- Set the matching switches inside the opener head to the identical pattern. They're usually behind the light cover or on the back panel.
- Set every other remote and keypad for that door to match as well.
- Test all of them before you walk away.
- Then seriously consider replacing the opener. A fixed-code unit is old enough that it may also predate the requirement for photo eyes, and that's a bigger issue than the code.
You’ll know it’s right when: The door stops responding to whatever was triggering it, and all of your own remotes still work on the new pattern.
The wall button or its wire is shorting
Hands-on — moderate riskThe two low-voltage wires running from the opener down to your wall button are the most exposed part of the whole system. Bridge them and the door runs, with no code and no radio involved — which is exactly what happens when a staple has been driven through the insulation, when a shelf bracket has pinched them behind a stud, when a rodent has taken the jacket off a section, or when moisture gets into an outdoor keypad and creeps across the contacts. The short doesn't have to be constant. A wire that's nicked down to a whisker of copper will make and break contact as the garage heats up in the afternoon and cools overnight, which produces openings at oddly consistent times of day and sends people hunting for automations that don't exist.
How you can tell: The door still opens by itself with lock mode on. The wall button may feel spongy, or the opener light may come on at strange moments too. Sometimes you can hear a faint click from the opener head just before it goes.
- At the opener head, find the two terminals the wall button wires land on and disconnect them both. Cap or separate the loose ends so they can't touch each other or anything metal.
- Leave the opener like that for a couple of days. Your remotes will still work; only the wall button is out of service.
- If the phantom openings stop, the fault is the button or the wire, not the opener.
- Follow the wire run with a flashlight, looking for staples driven through it, kinks where it passes a corner, crushed sections behind anything mounted to the wall, and green corrosion at the terminals.
- Press the wall button and feel whether it returns cleanly. A button that stays soft or doesn't click has failed and needs replacing.
- If there's an exterior keypad, open its housing and check for moisture, corrosion, or insects inside. Wireless keypads should be treated as a remote instead — pull the battery and test the same way.
You’ll know it’s right when: With the control wires disconnected, the door goes several days without opening on its own.
An automation or schedule nobody remembers setting
Basic checkThis one has quietly become the second most common cause, and it produces the most unnerving version of the symptom — the door opening at the same time every day, with the household standing there swearing nobody touched anything. Somewhere there's a routine: an app schedule set during a delivery, a geofence that opens the door when a phone comes within a certain radius, a smart speaker routine bundled into a “good morning” scene, a shared account on a family member's phone, or a hub automation that survived the app it was created in. Geofencing is the sneakiest, because it fires when a phone crosses an invisible line — which might be a neighbor's driveway, or a phone left in a car that someone else drove past the house.
How you can tell: Regularity is the tell. Real faults are messy; schedules are punctual. Check the opener's activity log — most connected openers keep a timestamped list showing whether each operation came from a phone, a schedule, or a physical control.
- Open the opener's own app and read the full activity history, not just the last few entries.
- Go through every schedule, automation, and routine in that app and switch off anything you can't personally account for.
- Check any smart-home platform the opener is linked to — a voice assistant, a home hub, a security system — and look at its routines separately. They don't always show up in the opener's own app.
- Look at who has access. Shared users, old household members, a phone that was set up years ago and still has the account on it.
- Turn off geofencing entirely while you're testing. It's the hardest one to reason about and the easiest one to rule out.
- If you can't find it, remove the opener from every platform, change the account password, and add back only what you actually use.
You’ll know it’s right when: The activity log shows no unexplained entries for a full week, and the timed openings have stopped.
Somebody else still has a working way in
Basic checkUncomfortable, but it belongs on the list, and it's the reason we tell every new homeowner to do one particular thing on day one. Look up your own model before assuming anything — an entry-level Chamberlain or Craftsman tops out near 8 remotes while a LiftMaster Elite handles 40, with the Contractor at 12 and the Premium at 24. Keypads are stored separately. Previous owners keep remotes. Contractors, house sitters, a tenant, a teenager's friend, and anyone who ever watched somebody type the keypad code all represent a way in that doesn't show up anywhere. A garage door doesn't log faces. Erasing the opener's memory and re-pairing only the devices you can physically hold in your hand closes every one of those doors at once, and it takes about ten minutes.
How you can tell: There's rarely a technical tell. Consider it strongly if you've recently bought or rented the property, if you've had work done, or if the openings happen at hours a person would plausibly be around rather than at 3 a.m.
- Collect every remote, fob and vehicle you actually want to keep working.
- Find the Learn button on the opener head — usually under the light cover, and colored. Yellow is Security+ 2.0, purple is Security+, red or orange is Billion Code, green or gray indicates an older generation.
- Press and hold that button for about six seconds until its indicator goes out. That erases every remote, keypad and vehicle button in the opener's memory, including any you don't know about.
- Now re-pair each device you kept: press and release the Learn button, then press the remote's button within about thirty seconds and wait for the opener to click or flash.
- Set a new keypad code as part of the same session, and pick something that isn't a house number or a birth year.
- If a vehicle's built-in button is paired, it will need re-programming too — that's usually a separate sequence in the car's manual.
You’ll know it’s right when: Only the devices you re-paired operate the door, and everything else you try does nothing.
The logic board has been damaged and is firing on its own
High risk — call a technicianWhen everything above has been ruled out, what's left is the board itself. The opener's logic board drives a relay that closes the motor circuit, and a relay with heat-damaged or surge-damaged contacts can weld partly closed or chatter on its own. Boards also fail in less dramatic ways: a cracked solder joint that makes contact when the board expands, a failing capacitor that lets voltage sag until the microcontroller resets and misreads its own inputs, or corrosion on a trace that bridges when humidity climbs. The common thread is that the opener has genuinely started generating commands rather than receiving them, and no amount of remote hunting will help.
How you can tell: Lock mode doesn't stop it. The wall button wires are disconnected and it still happens. It began after a storm, a power flicker, or a summer where the opener was tripping its thermal cutout. Sometimes the light behaves oddly too, or the opener responds sluggishly to normal commands between episodes.
It isn't opening by itself — it's reversing back open
Hands-on — moderate riskWorth separating out, because a fair number of the calls we get about a door “opening by itself” turn out to be a door that closed, touched down, and rode straight back up. From the kitchen it sounds identical: the motor runs when nobody pressed anything. The mechanism is completely different. The opener finished its close cycle, hit resistance it wasn't expecting or lost the sensor beam on the way down, and reversed — which is exactly what it's built to do. Nothing sent a stray command at all.
How you can tell: The door was closed a moment ago and is now open, rather than having been open for hours with no explanation. If you watch it happen, you'll see it go down first. The opener light may be flashing a diagnostic code afterwards.
- Stand where you can watch a full close cycle and note whether the door goes down before it comes back up.
- Check both photo eyes near the floor — both indicator lights should be on and steady through the whole travel.
- Look for anything crossing the beam at floor level: a bin that shifts, a hose, a bike wheel, a broom.
- Watch whether it reverses partway down or only after touching the concrete. Partway means the beam or an obstruction; only on contact means a travel limit or force setting.
- Count the opener light's blinks after a failed cycle — on LiftMaster and Chamberlain units that's a diagnostic code, and ten blinks is the sensor code.
You’ll know it’s right when: You've confirmed whether the door genuinely opens from rest, or whether it's completing a close and reversing.

Genie
Genie's rolling-code system is called Intellicode. The programming rhythm differs from LiftMaster in a way that trips people up during a security reset.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself
- A flashlight — for tracing the control wire along the wall and reading the terminal markings at the opener head
- A stepladder — the Learn button and the terminal block both live on the opener, usually under the light cover
- A small flat screwdriver — opener terminal screws and the tabs on most remote battery covers
- Fresh remote batteries — usually CR2032 or A23 — have them before you erase the memory, not after
- A notepad or a note on your phone — log the date, time and weather of every phantom opening. The pattern is the diagnosis on this one
- Electrical tape or wire nuts — for safely capping the wall button leads while you test with them disconnected
Things not to do — and why
It disables every remote and keypad you own, which means you'll turn it off eventually and be right back where you started. It's a diagnostic that tells you whether the trigger is arriving by radio, not a repair.
On any rolling-code opener it's not possible — the code changes on every press and a neighbor's transmitter is meaningless to your receiver. People spend weeks on this theory with a yellow Learn button sitting right in front of them.
Until you know what's opening the door, you don't know whether it's a stuck button or somebody with a working remote. That interior lock is the difference between an odd fault and an open house.
It's the most common way houses get entered through the garage, and it also happens to be a leading cause of the exact symptom on this page when something in the car presses the button.
A press and release pairs a device. A press and hold wipes every remote, keypad and vehicle button in memory. Doing it by accident in the middle of troubleshooting turns a ten-minute job into an evening.
It looks untidy hanging down, so people coil it or snip it. A compromised antenna makes the receiver work harder against background noise, which makes false triggers more likely rather than less.
A door that runs with the wall button disconnected and lock mode on is not responding to anything you control. Unplug it until it's been looked at — that's an unpowered garage for a day or two, not a door that can close on a vehicle.
A single unexplained opening is usually the first of a series. Boards, wires and buttons fail progressively, and the version of this that happens once a month becomes the version that happens nightly.
What makes this more common around Phoenix
A few of the causes above have a genuinely local flavor, and they're the ones we end up finding most often on service calls in Mesa, Gilbert and Queen Creek.
The biggest is what our summers do to remotes. A garage remote clipped to a visor sits in a parked car where the interior regularly passes 150°F, and it lives there for years. The rubber button pad softens, takes a set, and eventually stops springing back the way it should. A pad that stays even slightly depressed is a transmitter that never stops transmitting, and the door responds every time the signal strengthens. We replace a lot of remotes that look perfectly fine and simply cook themselves to death on a dashboard.
- Visor remotes cook — a parked car here is an oven, and heat-aged button pads are the single most common source of phantom commands we find.
- Monsoon surges damage boards — a nearby strike or a power flicker can leave a logic board partly compromised, and a relay that's been surged is a relay that can start closing on its own.
- Blowing dust and driven rain get into keypads — an exterior keypad on a west-facing wall takes the full force of a haboob and then a downpour. Grit and moisture inside the housing can bridge contacts and send a command nobody typed.
- Heat cycling loosens control wiring — a garage that swings sixty degrees between a July afternoon and a January night expands and contracts everything in it, including staples driven through low-voltage wire years ago. That's why so many of these faults start showing a daily rhythm.
- Older neighborhoods, older openers — parts of Mesa and Tempe have plenty of original openers still running, and fixed-code units are common enough there that the neighbor theory is occasionally right rather than folklore.
- An open garage matters more here — with attached garages and long stretches of the day when nobody's home, a door that opens itself in the morning can stay open until evening. That's the practical reason we treat this as a security call, not a nuisance call.
Keeping it from starting again
Most of this comes down to controlling what's allowed to send your opener a command, and knowing which devices those are.
- Erase and re-pair the opener's memory when you move in — and after any contractor, tenant or house sitter has had access. It's ten minutes and it closes every unknown remote at once.
- Replace remotes that have gone soft — if the button doesn't click crisply, the pad has aged out. Our heat does this in a few years rather than a decade.
- Keep remotes off the visor when the car sits outside — a keychain fob in a bag lives a much cooler life, and there's nothing in a bag to press it if it's clipped rather than loose.
- Audit your app once a year — read the schedules, the automations, the shared users and the geofences. Delete anything you can't explain in one sentence.
- Keep a real password on the opener account — it can open your house from anywhere in the world. It deserves the same treatment as your email, including two-factor if it's offered.
- Put the control wire out of harm's way — clipped rather than stapled, routed away from shelving, and not run where a shovel or a bike handlebar can reach it.
- Add surge protection at the outlet — it won't stop a direct strike, but it takes the edge off the ordinary monsoon-season transients that quietly degrade logic boards here.
Where this usually leads if it's ignored
Phantom operation is often the first visible sign of an electrical fault that has other symptoms behind it.
The reason it's worth chasing down rather than living with is that the same fault that opens a door at 3 a.m. is usually the one that leaves you stuck in the driveway a few months later. Finding it while the only cost is inconvenience is considerably cheaper than finding it afterwards.
When it's worth having us out
Call us if the door still opens with lock mode on and the wall button disconnected, if it started right after a storm, if you've pulled every remote battery in the house and it's still happening, or if you'd simply rather have somebody go through it methodically than spend three weekends on it. Also call if you've just bought the place and want the memory cleared and the whole system checked properly rather than guessing at what the last owner left behind.
- Test the receiver's behavior with every remote and keypad removed from memory, which isolates radio triggers from internal faults
- Check the control wire end to end for shorts, staple damage and corrosion, including the terminals at the opener head
- Inspect and test the wall control and any exterior keypad, including moisture and grit inside the housing
- Read the opener's activity history where the model keeps one, and go through the app's schedules, automations and shared users with you
- Check the logic board and relay for surge damage, heat damage and cracked joints
- Erase the opener's memory and re-pair only the devices you hand us, then set a new keypad code
- Confirm the antenna is intact and positioned correctly, and check for obvious interference sources in the garage
- Run the door through a full cycle, verify the safety reversal, and tell you plainly what we found

What it takes to put right
We don't publish prices, because this symptom spans a dead remote at one end and a logic board at the other, and quoting a number before we know which would be dishonest. Here's what actually moves it.
- Whether it turns out to be a remote By far the most common outcome, and the smallest one. A heat-aged remote is a replacement, not a repair.
- Whether the control wire needs replacing A short we can find and splice in an accessible run is quick. A run chewed through inside a finished wall means new wire and a route for it.
- Whether the wall control or keypad has failed Both are replaceable parts, and the multi-function panels with light and lock controls cost more than a plain button. Either one is a short remote and keypad replacement to fit.
- Whether the logic board is involved It's the most expensive single component in most openers, and surge damage isn't always confined to one part of it.
- How old the opener is On a fixed-code unit or anything past fifteen years, putting a board in it rarely makes sense next to a new opener with current safety features.
- Whether you want the security side handled properly Clearing the memory, re-pairing your devices, resetting keypad codes and reviewing app access takes a bit longer than a straight repair, and it's usually the part that actually settles people's minds.

Questions we get asked about this
Overnight openings with no pattern point at either radio interference or a partly shorted control wire, because those are the two causes that don't need a person involved. Start by pulling the batteries out of every remote in the house for a few days. If it still happens, disconnect the wall button wires at the opener and test again — that separates the radio side from the hardwired side in one move.
Only if both openers are old enough to use fixed codes, which you can check in about ten seconds. Slide the cover off your remote: if there's a row of tiny dip switches, duplicated codes are genuinely possible and you should change the pattern at both the remote and the opener. If there are no switches, your opener uses a rolling code that changes on every press, and a neighbor's transmitter simply cannot operate it.
Work in this order, because it saves the most time. Pull every remote battery in the house. If that doesn't do it, turn on lock mode at the wall panel for a few days. If it still opens, disconnect the wall button wires at the opener. Each step eliminates a whole category, and by the third one you know whether you're chasing a remote, a radio signal, or a fault inside the opener.
It's usually a stuck remote button or a wiring fault, not an intrusion. That said, you can't tell the difference by watching the door, so it's worth treating it as a security question until you've ruled it out. Erase the opener's memory, re-pair only the remotes you can physically hold, change the keypad code, and keep the door between the garage and the house locked while you're working it out.
It can, though interference far more often stops a remote working than triggers a door. LED bulbs with cheap drivers are the usual suspect, and the ones screwed into the opener itself sit inches from the receiver. Wireless doorbells, Wi-Fi extenders, driveway sensors and failing power supplies can all contribute. Unplug recent additions one at a time and give each change a couple of days.
Something in the car is transmitting. Either the visor remote has a button held down by a sun shade, paperwork or the visor itself, or the vehicle's built-in garage button is being pressed as the visor swings up. Take the battery out of the visor remote and see whether it stops. Heat-aged button pads are common here — a remote that has spent three summers on a dashboard often won't spring back cleanly any more.
It's one of the most useful things you can do, and it's near the top of our list for this symptom specifically. A stolen remote, a neighbor's opener sharing a fixed code, or a remote buried in a drawer with a button pressed in all produce a door that opens unprompted — and erasing the memory eliminates every one of them at once. The cost is reprogramming everything afterwards. Worth it if a door is opening on its own.
Very possibly, and it's the cause behind most openings that happen at the same time every day. Check the opener's activity log first — connected units usually record whether each operation came from a phone, a schedule or a button. Then go through every automation, routine and geofence in both the opener's app and any smart-home platform it's linked to. Geofencing is worth switching off entirely while you test.
That's a different fault with a similar sound. The door completed its close cycle and reversed, which means either the photo eye beam broke on the way down or the opener hit resistance it read as an obstruction. Watch a full cycle: if the door travels down before coming back up, nothing sent a stray command and you want the reversal troubleshooting rather than this page.
It can, and around here it's worth taking seriously during monsoon season. A surge can damage the relay on the logic board so that its contacts weld partly closed or chatter, at which point the opener is generating its own commands. The tell is that lock mode doesn't stop it and neither does disconnecting the wall button. Unplug the opener until it's been looked at.
Yes, and more often than most people do — certainly when you move in, after any contractor or house sitter has used it, and any time you've had an unexplained opening. Codes get watched from the street more easily than people realize. Pick something that isn't your house number, a birth year, or the last four of a phone number.
That's exactly what lock or vacation mode on the wall panel does — the opener ignores its radio receiver entirely while the wall button keeps working. It's genuinely useful as a diagnostic, and it's worth using overnight while you're chasing this. Just don't treat it as the fix, because you'll switch it off eventually and the underlying cause will still be there.
If it's on fixed codes, it's old enough that we'd want to talk about it regardless of this fault — that generation often predates a lot of what current openers do for safety. Past about fifteen years, a failed logic board usually costs enough relative to a new unit that replacement is the better spend.
