You leave the door open while you unload the car, turn around, and it's shut. Or you're working in the yard and it comes down behind you with nobody near a button. This is a different animal from a door that opens itself, and it's worth saying up front why: openers ship with features that are supposed to close the door unattended, and a great many people have those features switched on without knowing it. So the first job here isn't hunting a fault — it's working out whether your opener is malfunctioning or following an instruction it was given.
This is general guidance based on what we see on service calls — it isn’t a substitute for someone looking at your actual door. Every door is a little different, and if anything here feels beyond what you want to take on, stop and give us a call.
Check this before anything else
An unattended close is only acceptable if the systems that stop the door on a person are working. These are the situations where they may not be.
- The door closes with no warning beep and no flashing light at all.
- It has closed onto a car, a bin, a bike, or anything else and kept going rather than reversing.
- One or both photo eyes near the floor are unlit, dim, or blinking.
- It closes faster than usual, or lands hard on the concrete.
- Children or pets use the garage, and you can't predict when it will close.
The whole basis on which a door is allowed to close with nobody watching is that the photo eyes and the auto-reverse will catch anything in the way. If the door is closing unattended and the sensors aren't healthy, that assumption is gone. Switch off any timer or automation until you've confirmed both sensor lights are on and steady and the door reverses properly on a 2x4 laid flat in its path. On some openers it's a menu option on the wall panel, on others it's a physical switch or dip setting on the powerhead, and on plenty of units it only exists in the app. Common intervals are one, five, and ten minutes after the door reaches full open.

3Read the activity log on your phone
Connected openers keep a timestamped history, and it usually distinguishes a scheduled or app-initiated close from a button press. That single screen resolves a lot of arguments about who closed the door.

4Watch whether it drifts with the opener still connected
Open the door and leave it. Come back in twenty minutes and see whether it has sunk below where the opener left it. Do this with the opener still connected — you are only observing, and the opener acts as a backstop. If it has crept down, gravity is closing your door rather than the opener, and that's a spring problem rather than a settings one.

The beep is the fork
This one question sorts almost every version of this complaint, and it takes one cycle to answer.
One wrinkle worth knowing: on some units the warning only sounds for a timer-driven close and not for an app command sent from your phone, since the app assumes you meant it. If you get no beep but the log shows an app close, treat it as cause 2 rather than a fault.
Which version is yours?
The gap between opening the door and it shutting itself is usually the most informative thing you can measure.
Textbook timer-to-close. The consistency is the giveaway — faults aren't punctual.

Closing a garage door unattended is treated differently from opening one, for the obvious reason. A door going up can't trap anything. A door coming down can, and that has shaped how these features are built.
Under UL 325, the standard residential openers are built to, a door isn't permitted to close on a command from somebody who can't see it unless the opener gives a clear warning first. In practice that means an audible alert that sounds for several seconds before the door begins to move and continues while it travels, together with a flashing light. If you've ever wondered why your opener beeps at you when the timer runs out but stays silent when you press the wall button, that's the reason — the wall button implies you're standing there looking at the door, and the timer implies you're not.
That warning sits on top of the two protections that are always running. The photo eyes across the opening will stop and reverse the door if anything breaks the beam. The force monitoring will reverse it if it meets more resistance than expected on the way down. Unattended operation leans on both of those far more heavily than a normal close does, because there's no human in the loop to let go of the button.
Which leads to the practical rule we give people: the timer feature is genuinely useful, and we're not going to tell you not to use it. But it's only reasonable on a door whose sensors are healthy and whose reversal has been tested recently. If either of those is in question, switch the timer off until they're sorted rather than relying on it to catch a mistake.
So the beep isn't just a courtesy. It's the opener telling you which category of behavior you're watching, and that's why it's the first thing to listen for.

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
Timer-to-close is switched on
Basic checkThe most common answer, and it surprises people every time because they don't remember enabling it. Sometimes it was set by the installer as a courtesy. Sometimes it came on when a wall panel was replaced, or when the opener was linked to an app and a default got applied. It closes the door a fixed interval after it reaches fully open — commonly one, five, or ten minutes — and it announces itself with the warning beep and flashing light every single time. Once you know it's there, the behavior stops feeling sinister and starts feeling like a feature you get to choose.
How you can tell: Perfect regularity. Open the door, start a stopwatch on your phone, and walk away. If it closes at the same interval twice in a row, with a warning first, this is your cause and there is nothing wrong with your opener.
- Time it. Open the door, note the minute, and see exactly how long it takes to close itself. That number will match a menu option.
- Check the wall control first. Multi-function panels often have a menu or a dedicated button for timer-to-close, and the interval is usually chosen from a short list.
- If the wall panel has nothing, look at the powerhead — some models put this on a physical switch or a small settings menu under the light cover.
- Then check the app. On plenty of current openers the timer lives only in the app, and nowhere on the hardware at all.
- Switch it off, or set a longer interval if you actually like the feature and just want more time.
- If you're keeping it, test the door's safety reversal first: lay a 2x4 flat on the floor directly under the center of the door, running across the opening in the opening and confirm the door reverses when it touches. That test matters more on a door that closes unattended than on one that doesn't.

An app schedule, routine, or geofence is closing it
Basic checkThe software version of the same thing, and it has grown into a very common cause. A schedule closes the door at a set time — often 10 p.m., because somebody set it once during a week when the door kept getting left open. A geofence closes it when a phone crosses a boundary around the house, which sounds tidy until you realize the boundary can be a quarter-mile wide and a phone left in a car being driven by somebody else will trigger it. Third-party hubs and voice assistants add their own layer, and their routines don't show up in the opener's own app at all.
How you can tell: The close time correlates with the clock rather than with when the door opened, or with somebody leaving rather than with anything mechanical. The activity log usually names the source outright.
- Open the opener's app and read the whole activity history. Look at what the entries say about the origin of each close.
- Go through every schedule and automation in that app and turn off anything you can't account for in a sentence.
- Turn geofencing off completely while you test. It's the hardest one to reason about and the easiest one to eliminate.
- Check the other platforms separately — a voice assistant, a home hub, a security system. Routines built there operate the opener without appearing in its own automation list.
- Look at who has access to the account. A former household member's phone can still be running a routine from years ago.
- If you can't find it, unlink the opener from every platform, change the account password, and add back only what you use.

A stray close command is arriving
Hands-on — moderate riskIf there's no warning sequence, the opener thinks somebody pressed a button. On a door that's already open, a single command closes it — so a remote transmitting from a bag, a keypad with moisture bridging its contacts, or a vehicle's built-in button being leaned on will all produce a door that shuts itself. This is the same underlying mechanism as a door opening by itself; what decides which symptom you get is simply where the door was sitting when the signal arrived. Because most doors spend most of their time closed, people notice the opening version more often — but if your door tends to sit open while you work in the garage, you'll notice this one instead.
How you can tell: No beep, no flashing light, no pattern to the timing. Often correlates with somebody arriving home, moving something in the garage, or picking up a particular bag.
- Gather every remote and fob in the house, pull the batteries, and leave them somewhere flat with nothing resting on top.
- Give it two or three days. If the closes stop, one of those remotes was transmitting.
- Reintroduce them one at a time until you find the offender, then look at its button pad — if it doesn't click crisply, it's finished.
- Turn on lock or vacation mode at the wall panel for a couple of days as a broader test. It makes the opener ignore its radio entirely.
- Open any exterior keypad's housing and check for moisture, grit, corrosion, or insects across the contacts.
- Check the vehicles too. A built-in mirror or console button can be triggered by a visor swinging up against it.

The wall control or its wire is shorting
Hands-on — moderate riskTwo low-voltage wires run from the opener down the wall to your button, and anything that bridges them runs the door. No code, no radio, nothing to trace in an app. Staples driven through the jacket, a shelf bracket pinching the pair behind a stud, rodent damage, or moisture wicking into an outdoor control all do it. The failure is frequently intermittent, which is what makes it maddening: a conductor worn down to a whisker makes and breaks contact as the garage heats through the afternoon and cools overnight, so the door starts closing at oddly similar times of day and everybody goes looking for a schedule that doesn't exist.
How you can tell: It happens with lock mode on and every remote battery removed. The wall button may feel spongy or fail to click. Sometimes you hear a faint relay click at the opener head immediately before the door moves.
- At the opener head, disconnect both wall-button wires from their terminals and cap the loose ends so nothing can bridge them.
- Leave it that way for a few days — your remotes will still work, only the wall button is out.
- If the closes stop, the fault is in the button or the wire rather than in the opener.
- Trace the wire with a flashlight, looking for staple punctures, crush points behind anything mounted to the wall, kinks at corners, and green corrosion at the ends.
- Wiggle sections of the run while watching for the opener to react. An intermittent short often shows itself under gentle movement.
- Replace a wall button that doesn't spring back cleanly. They're an inexpensive part and a very common failure.

A third-party accessory has its own auto-close rule
Basic checkWorth its own entry because it catches people who have already checked the opener and the opener's app and found nothing. Aftermarket controllers, security-system integrations, camera systems with a garage add-on, and standalone auto-close modules all exist, and several of them have their own timer built in — running on their own logic, invisible to the opener's software. If somebody added a controller to make an old opener smart, or the alarm company tied the garage into an away mode, the rule lives there rather than anywhere you've looked.
How you can tell: Nothing in the opener's own settings or app explains the behavior, but there's a small extra box wired to the opener's terminals, or a sensor stuck to the door itself, or the garage appears somewhere in a security app.
- Look at the opener head and the ceiling around it for any device that isn't part of the original unit — a small controller, a bridge, a sensor tilted onto the top door panel.
- Identify it, then find its own app or web interface rather than the opener's.
- Read its automation rules, including any bundled into modes like away, night, or armed.
- Check whether a security or alarm system has the garage as a device. Alarm arming routines that close the garage are a common install choice.
- Disable rules one at a time so you know which one was responsible rather than switching everything off at once.
- If the accessory is obsolete or nobody knows what it does, unplugging it for a week is a legitimate test.

The door isn't being closed — it's falling
High risk — call a technicianThis is the one that changes the character of the whole page, and it's why we always ask whether the motor is actually running. Your springs carry nearly all the door's weight; the opener supplies a nudge and holds position. When springs fatigue or break, the door becomes something the opener is restraining rather than moving, and a tired or worn trolley connection will let it creep down. In the worst version there's no creeping at all — the door comes down fast. A door drifting closed with the motor silent is not a settings problem and nothing in an app will fix it.
How you can tell: Two safe checks. First, leave the door open with the opener connected and come back later — if it has sunk, the springs aren't holding it. Second, with the door closed, pull the emergency release and lift by hand a foot or so: a healthy door feels like about ten pounds and holds where you stop it. Never pull the release with the door open to test this — that is exactly the condition where a weak spring lets the door come down fast, and it is the specific thing every manufacturer's manual warns against.
A setting reverted, or the board has been damaged
High risk — call a technicianThe last resort, once the timer is off, the app is clean, the remotes are dead and the control wire is disconnected. Two things live here. The mild version: a power event caused the opener to restore a default, and on some units timer-to-close is part of that default. That's a settings problem in disguise and it's easy to fix once you know. The serious version: a surge or years of heat have damaged the logic board, and the relay that drives the motor is chattering or partly welded, generating commands the opener never received. Openers here take a beating during monsoon season, and this is one of the ways it shows up.
How you can tell: It began immediately after a storm or a power flicker. Nothing you disconnect makes any difference. The opener may also behave oddly in other ways — the light coming on at strange moments, sluggish responses, or intermittent operation between episodes.

Things not to do — and why
The release disconnects the door from the opener but does nothing about its weight — the springs carry that. If a spring is weak or broken, releasing an open door lets it come down fast, and this page is about doors whose springs are suspect. Every manufacturer's manual carries this warning. Test balance with the door closed.
Unattended closing rests entirely on the photo eyes and the auto-reverse catching whatever's in the way. If either sensor light is out, dim, or blinking, the feature has lost the safety net that justifies it.
A door held on a ladder or a bin is a door under load in a way it wasn't designed for, and when the opener runs against it something gives — usually the track, the top section, or the trolley. Switch the feature off instead.
It's a warning, not a barrier, and a few seconds is not much time for a child who's absorbed in something. If kids use the garage, the timer is worth turning off rather than trusting the alert.
If the timer close keeps reversing, the door is telling you it meets resistance it doesn't like. Raising the force means the door now has more power to push through whatever that is — including something soft.
They've been required by federal law on residential openers since 1993, and a UL 325 opener won't run normally without them anyway. Bypassing them on a door that closes with nobody watching is the worst possible combination.
Almost every household we say this to is certain nobody did, and the log frequently says otherwise. Shared accounts, old phones and routines built inside a voice assistant are all easy to forget about entirely.
A door that won't stay put with the opener disconnected isn't being held by its springs, and everything under it — cars, bikes, people — is relying on the opener to hold weight it wasn't built for.
Any change to force, limits, or the timer should be followed by laying a 2x4 flat in the opening and confirming the door reverses on contact. It takes a minute and it's the only check that actually proves the safety system works.
The local angle on this one
Two things push this symptom around here, and they pull in opposite directions.
The first is that people in Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert genuinely use the timer feature more than average, and for a good reason: a garage door left open on a July afternoon turns the garage into a furnace and lets a dust storm redecorate everything in it. Auto-close is a sensible habit in this climate. The second is that our conditions are unusually hard on the systems that make auto-close safe — the photo eyes that keep it honest are the same lenses that get filmed with fine monsoon silt, and the bottom seal that has to make clean contact with the concrete is the same rubber that softens and grabs in the heat.
- Silt on the lenses undermines the safety net — fine monsoon dust films a photo eye without ever looking dirty. On a door that closes unattended, those lenses deserve wiping after every storm rather than twice a year.
- Low winter sun blinds the receiving eye — a west-facing garage in the late afternoon can wash out the beam entirely, which makes a timed close reverse for no visible reason. Shading the receiver usually settles it.
- Hot weather seal drags on the concrete — the rubber softens and grabs at the slab, adding just enough resistance at the end of travel to trip a marginal force setting during an unattended close.
- Monsoon surges reach the logic board — the opener's board is exposed to every transient on the circuit, and relay damage is one of the ways that shows up. Storm-season onset is a real pattern for this symptom.
- Springs fatigue faster in this heat — springs in this valley tend to go before the ten years people plan around — that's our field observation, and DASMA's own recommendation is that doors in extreme-heat climates be kept closed where possible, and our own call history matches it — springs here rarely make the ten years you'd plan around elsewhere, which is why the door-drifting-closed version of this complaint turns up here more than it should.
- Heat cycling works on the control wiring — a garage that swings sixty degrees between afternoon and dawn expands and contracts everything in it, which is exactly how a marginally damaged wire develops a daily rhythm.
Making auto-close something you can trust
If you want the feature — and plenty of people here do — the maintenance that keeps it honest is short and specific.
- Run the 2x4 reversal test twice a year — lay it flat in the opening and confirm the door reverses on contact. This matters more on a door that closes with nobody watching than on one that doesn't.
- Wipe both photo eye lenses after every dust storm — soft dry cloth, ten seconds. The film that builds here is invisible until you look at the cloth.
- Keep the sensor beam path clear by habit — nothing stored within a foot of either eye, so a bin that shifts overnight can't drift into the beam before a timed close.
- Set the interval long enough to be useful — a one-minute timer that closes on you while you're carrying groceries is a timer you'll end up disabling. Five or ten minutes is usually the sweet spot.
- Review your automations once a year — schedules, geofences, shared users, and anything an alarm or camera system has been given control of.
- Do the balance test twice a year — release the door at full open and confirm it stays put. This catches a fatiguing spring long before the door starts drifting closed.
- Check the bottom seal each spring — hardened rubber grabbing hot concrete adds real drag right at the end of travel, and it's an inexpensive part to replace.
How this fits with everything else
The mechanical version of this complaint sits in the middle of a familiar sequence.
Most people arrive at this page and leave with a setting changed, which is the happy outcome. The reason we insist on the release-and-watch test anyway is that the small number of cases where the door is falling rather than closing are the ones that matter, and they're indistinguishable from the kitchen.

- Locate and demonstrate every timer, schedule and automation touching the door, including anything living in an accessory rather than the opener
- Test both photo eyes and their wiring end to end, including the terminals at the opener head
- Run the safety reversal test the way UL 325 requires and show you the result rather than describing it
- Check the close-force and travel limits against the manufacturer's figures for your unit
- Release the door and measure its balance by hand — the check that separates a falling door from a closing one
- Inspect the control wire run, the wall control, and any exterior keypad for shorts, moisture and corrosion
- Lubricate rollers, hinges and bearings, and check the bottom seal for heat-related drag while we're there

That's timer-to-close, a built-in feature that shuts the door a set interval after it reaches fully open. Common intervals are one, five and ten minutes. It's not a fault — it announces itself with a warning beep and a flashing light every time. Look for the setting on your wall control, on the powerhead, or in the opener's app, and switch it off or lengthen the interval if you'd rather it didn't.
It's the warning that a door is about to close with nobody standing at the controls. Openers built to UL 325 aren't permitted to close on an unattended command without alerting first, so you get several seconds of beeping and a flashing light before the door moves and while it travels. If your door closes silently and unexpectedly, that's a sign it isn't a timer at all — something is sending an ordinary close command.
It depends on where your opener keeps the setting. Start with the multi-function wall control, which often has a timer menu or a labeled button. If it's not there, check the powerhead under the light cover, then check the opener's app — on many current units the timer lives only in software. Time the interval first, because that number will match the option you're looking for.
No warning means it isn't a designed unattended close, so you're looking at a stray command instead. Pull the batteries from every remote in the house for a few days, then turn on lock mode at the wall panel, then disconnect the wall button wires at the opener. Each step rules out a whole category, and by the third one you'll know whether it's radio, hardwired, or the opener itself.
That depends entirely on the condition of the systems meant to catch a mistake. On a door with both photo eyes lit and steady and a reversal you've tested with a 2x4 on the floor, plenty of households use it happily and it saves a lot of doors left open. On a door where either of those is in question, we'd leave it off until they're sorted — the feature is only reasonable because something is watching the opening.
Yes, and it's one of the more common answers now. A schedule closes it at a fixed time, and a geofence closes it when a phone crosses a boundary around the house — which can be far wider than people expect, and can be triggered by a phone left in a car somebody else is driving. Read the opener's activity log, then go through the automations in both the opener's app and any smart-home platform it's linked to.
Some openers restore default settings after a power event, and on certain units timer-to-close is part of that default. Check the setting again after any outage rather than assuming it stayed where you left it. If nothing in the settings explains it and it began right after a storm, board damage is worth considering — monsoon-season surges are hard on opener electronics here. Surge damage is worth confirming on a garage door opener repair rather than living with a door that moves unasked.
If it drifts down with the motor silent, the door isn't being closed — it's falling, because the springs aren't holding its weight. You can confirm this safely by leaving the door open with the opener still connected and checking later whether it has sunk. Don't pull the emergency release to test it with the door up: with a weakening spring that's how a door comes down hard. Test balance with the door closed instead, or just call us. Either way it needs spring work, and no opener adjustment will change it.
It can, and which symptom you get depends on where the door was sitting when the signal arrived. A remote held down in a bag or under something on a shelf transmits continuously, and the opener acts on it — closing an open door just as readily as opening a closed one. Gather every remote, pull the batteries, and see whether the behavior stops.
That's a reversal, not a phantom command. The opener either lost the sensor beam on the way down or met more resistance than it expected and did what it's built to do. Check that both sensor lights are on and steady, look for anything crossing the beam at floor level, and note whether it reverses partway or only after touching the concrete — those point at different causes.
It's a fair thing to want. The warning beep gives a few seconds' notice, which is plenty for an adult and not much for a child who's absorbed in something. Plenty of families here keep the feature and simply set a longer interval, and plenty switch it off while the kids are small. Either is reasonable — what isn't is running it on a door whose sensors haven't been checked.
The close is starting fine and then being interrupted, which is a sensor or resistance problem rather than a timer problem. Check both photo eyes for a steady light, wipe the lenses, and look at whether low afternoon sun is falling on the receiving eye — that's a genuine cause on west-facing garages here. Don't raise the down-force to push through it; that removes the protection the unattended close depends on.
