How to Make a Garage Door Harder to Break Into

Garage security advice has a habit of starting with the exotic and ending with the obvious, which is backwards. So this page is ordered by what actually changes the odds, and the top of the list costs nothing.

Two things about garages in the Phoenix area are worth stating up front. Most of them are attached, which means the garage isn't really the target — it's the corridor. And a garage holds a concentration of portable, valuable, easily resold things that most people would never leave in a shed: tools, bikes, e-bikes, coolers, golf clubs, a second refrigerator.

The good news is that the effective measures are mostly habits and small adjustments rather than purchases. The hardware comes later on the list, and one popular piece of it is genuinely a bad idea.

    If it does, the door between the two is doing more security work than the big one, and it's very often a hollow-core interior door with a privacy knob and no deadbolt. That's the single most common gap we notice, and nobody thinks of it as part of garage security because it faces the wrong way.

    Be honest here rather than aspirational.     Check how old the opener is

    Openers made from the mid-nineties onward use rolling codes — the remote's code changes every press. Older fixed-code units send the same signal every time, which is a meaningfully different situation. Look for a Security+ or Intellicode badge, or a learn button, both of which indicate a rolling-code system.

    Look at the top of the door from outside

    Stand on the driveway and look at the gap between the top of the closed door and the header trim. That gap, and how far the emergency release cord hangs, determine whether the release is reachable from outside. It's a real and widely-known vulnerability, and it has straightforward mitigations.

What that means: Then the priority order is: keep the big door closed, harden the door between the garage and the house, then deal with the release cord and the remotes. The garage is a route, and the last barrier is a door people rarely think about as a security item at all.

What that means: Different calculus. There's no route into the house, so it's about the contents and about the fact that nobody hears anything. Physical locking becomes genuinely useful here — a detached door you operate by hand can carry a proper lock without the risk that comes with one on an opener-equipped door.

Attached, and I'm going away for a while
What that means: An empty house changes the plan. Use the opener's lock mode so remotes can't operate it, deal with the release cord, secure the interior door, and make sure nothing about the property advertises that nobody is home.

Whatever you do, keep the emergency release usable. It's the only way out of a garage when the power is down, and anything that defeats it entirely trades a small security gain for a genuine problem on a monsoon evening.

What a garage door is and isn't

A sectional door is a large, light panel assembly designed to be lifted by a spring. It is not a security barrier in the way a solid entry door is, and no amount of aftermarket hardware turns it into one. Understanding that is what stops people spending money in the wrong place.

What it does provide is a closed, opaque, awkward obstacle — and awkward is doing most of the work. Nearly all of what happens to garages around here is opportunistic. Something visible, something quick, something that doesn't require a plan. That's why the measures that work are the ones that remove opportunity rather than the ones that try to win a contest of force.

There are three separate systems worth thinking about. Physical: the door, the tracks, and any lock. Access control: remotes, keypads, apps — who can make the door open. And the last barrier: the door between the garage and the house, which decides whether a garage problem becomes a house problem.

Most households have spent money on the first, no thought on the second, and nothing at all on the third. Reversing that order is most of this page.

Rolling code A remote system where the code changes on every press. Standard since the mid-nineties. Fixed-code systems repeat the same signal.
Opener lock mode The padlock button on the wall control. Blocks remotes and keypads while leaving the wall button working.
Emergency release The cord that disconnects the door from the opener so it can be moved by hand. Required for getting out during a power failure.
The last barrier The door between the garage and the living space. Usually the weakest lock in the house and the one that matters most.

Remove opportunity, control who can open it, and make the interior door worth something. Everything else is refinement.

These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.

Keep the door closed — everything else is secondary

Basic check

This is unglamorous and it's the whole game. A closed garage door is an obstacle, an opaque one, and enough of a decision that most opportunistic attention moves on. An open one is a display case with the contents labeled and the route into the house sitting at the back of it.

Around here, doors get left open for ordinary reasons: someone is working in the yard, a remote got bumped in a pocket, the door reversed on something and nobody noticed, or a household got in the habit of leaving it up in the evening for airflow. That last one is common in this valley and it's the one worth breaking, because it happens at the hours when the street is quietest.

The tools that help are boring and effective. Most openers have a timer-to-close setting. Most connected openers send a notification when the door has been open for a set period. Both remove the failure mode where nobody notices.

How you can tell: Ask yourself when you last found the door open and couldn't say for how long. If the answer isn't 'never,' this is your first job.

The fix
  1. Check whether your opener supports a timer-to-close. Many do, and it's usually a setting on the wall control rather than a purchase.
  2. If the opener is connected, turn on open-door notifications and set the threshold somewhere you'd actually act on.
  3. Get in the habit of watching the door close in the mirror before you leave, rather than pressing and driving.
  4. Break the evening ventilation habit. A door propped a foot open gives up everything the rest of the page is trying to achieve.
  5. Check the safety sensors are working properly — a door that reverses on a beam interruption and gets left up is a common way a garage ends up open all night.
  6. Give anyone else who uses the garage the same brief. One person's habit undoes everyone else's.

You’ll know it’s right when: The door is closed whenever nobody is actively using the garage, and something other than memory is enforcing that.

Where to stop: If the door regularly reverses or refuses to close, don't work around it by leaving it open. That's a fault worth fixing, and the security consequence is the strongest argument for fixing it promptly.

Harden the door between the garage and the house

Basic check

The most valuable thing on this page after the habit above, and the one people never think of as garage security because it faces indoors.

In an enormous number of houses, the door from the garage into the kitchen or the hallway is a hollow-core interior door with a privacy knob — no deadbolt, a short strike plate, and half-inch screws into trim. It exists to stop drafts and noise. It is nevertheless the barrier standing between a garage and everything in the house.

Upgrading it is ordinary carpentry with an outsized payoff. A solid-core or exterior-rated door, a deadbolt, and a reinforced strike plate with three-inch screws driven into the framing rather than the trim. That last detail matters more than the lock itself — most failures at a residential door are the frame giving way, not the bolt.

Then use it. A deadbolt that nobody throws is a decorative brass object.

How you can tell: Knock on the door from the garage side. A hollow sound means a hollow core. Look at whether there's a deadbolt at all, and at the length of the screws in the strike plate.

The fix
  1. Check what the door is. Hollow-core doors are light, sound hollow, and are extremely common in this position.
  2. Fit a deadbolt if there isn't one. It's the single most cost-effective change in this whole subject.
  3. Replace the strike plate with a reinforced one and drive three-inch screws through it into the wall framing, not just the trim.
  4. Do the same at the hinges — long screws into the framing on the hinge side matter as much as the lock side.
  5. Get in the habit of locking it at night and when you're away, which is the part that turns hardware into security.
  6. If the door is also a fire separation between the garage and the house, keep any self-closing or rated function intact when you replace it.

You’ll know it’s right when: The door is solid, it has a deadbolt, the strike is anchored into framing, and it actually gets locked.

Where to stop: Fire separation between an attached garage and living space is a real requirement, so don't remove a self-closing hinge or replace a rated door with something lighter for convenience. Upgrading in the other direction — heavier, better anchored — is the direction you want anyway.

The emergency release cord and the gap above the door

Hands-on — moderate risk

This one deserves an honest treatment rather than either alarmism or silence, and it has its own page for the detail.

The short version: the red cord that disconnects the door from the opener hangs inside the garage, and on some doors the gap between the top of the door and the header is large enough that the cord can be reached from outside. It's a widely documented vulnerability and it's the reason security-minded advice keeps returning to it.

The mitigations are straightforward and none of them require defeating the release. Shorten the cord so it hangs no lower than it needs to for someone to reach it standing on the floor. Fit a purpose-made shield over the release mechanism, which blocks access to the latch while leaving the cord usable from inside. Reduce the gap at the header with proper trim and seal, which helps the perimeter as well.

The one absolute: the release has to keep working. It's how you get out of a garage during a power failure, and monsoon season here takes the power out regularly in the evening. Anything that permanently prevents it from operating trades a modest security gain for a serious problem on the night you need it.

How you can tell: Stand outside the closed door and look at the header gap. Then look at how low the cord and handle hang from inside.

The fix
  1. Measure the gap above the closed door and note how far the release cord hangs down.
  2. Shorten the cord so it's still comfortably reachable from the floor but not hanging any lower than that.
  3. Consider a purpose-made release shield, which covers the latch mechanism and still lets the cord be pulled from inside.
  4. Close the header gap properly with trim and seal — it helps here and it closes a route for dust, water and pests at the same time.
  5. Whatever you fit, test it: pull the release from inside and confirm the door disconnects normally, then re-engage it with the door closed.
  6. Make sure everyone in the house knows where the release is and how it works, because the point of it is a night when the lights are off.

You’ll know it’s right when: The release still disconnects the door cleanly from inside, and nothing about it is reachable through the gap at the top.

Where to stop: Never permanently disable the release. If you use a zip tie as a deterrent, it must still part under a firm pull from inside, and it needs testing rather than assuming. A release that won't operate is a trapped car and a trapped household in the next outage.

Control who can make the door open

Basic check

Physical hardware gets the attention, but the door opening on request is a more likely route than the door being forced.

Start with remotes. A remote clipped to the visor of a car parked on the driveway is a key to the house sitting outside the house, and it stops being theoretical the moment somebody tries a door handle. Move it inside, or use a keychain remote that leaves the car with you.

Then the opener's age. Units from the mid-nineties onward use rolling codes, where the transmitted code changes on every press. Fixed-code systems older than that repeat the same signal, which is a different situation. If your opener predates rolling codes, replacing it is a security improvement as well as a reliability one.

Then housekeeping. If you've bought the house, inherited it, rented it out, or had work done, you don't know how many remotes are paired. Every opener has a way to erase all paired devices — press and hold the learn button until the indicator goes out — after which you re-pair only the remotes you're holding. Keypad codes deserve the same treatment.

How you can tell: You can't say with confidence how many remotes will open your door, or when the keypad code was last changed.

The fix
  1. Take remotes out of cars that park outside, or switch to keychain remotes.
  2. Find the learn button on the opener and note its color — it tells you which generation of system you have.
  3. Erase all paired devices by pressing and holding the learn button until the indicator goes out, then re-pair only the remotes you actually have.
  4. Change the keypad code, and change it again after anyone temporary has had it.
  5. Use the opener's lock mode when you're away — it stops remotes and keypads working while leaving the wall button live.
  6. If your opener predates rolling codes, put replacement on the list. It's a genuine difference rather than a marketing one.

You’ll know it’s right when: You know exactly which devices can open your door, the keypad code is one you set, and nothing that opens the garage lives in a car parked outside.

Where to stop: Erasing paired devices clears everything — car HomeLink buttons and keypads included. Have your remotes in hand before you do it, and expect to reprogram the vehicles afterwards. If reprogramming every remote and keypad sounds like an evening you'd rather not have, it's a short garage door opener repair visit.

Physical locking — where it helps and where it hurts

Hands-on — moderate risk

The part where the popular advice and the correct advice diverge.

On a manual door — a detached garage, a shop, a door you lift by hand — a side lock or slide bolt is genuinely useful. A steel bar through the vertical track means the door cannot be lifted, and there's no motor that might try. Fit it, keep it lubricated, and use it.

On a door with an opener, a manual lock is a liability rather than a feature. The opener has no way of knowing the door is pinned, so it pulls anyway, and the load goes into the top section where the arm attaches. That section bends and stays bent. This isn't just our house rule — DASMA states it directly in Technical Data Sheet #192: “when a garage door is automated through the installation of a garage door operator, manual locks are typically disengaged, disabled, or removed.” That's why installers take them out of service, and why we'd rather you didn't reinstate one.

There is exactly one exception, and it's worth naming rather than pretending the rule is absolute. The same sheet continues: “garage doors designed for higher wind resistance may employ manual locks to be engaged prior to a high wind event.” So on a wind-rated door that came with a manual locking device as part of that design, DASMA does tell you to engage it before a storm — and in the same breath to disconnect the operator while it's locked, and to unlock it before normal operation resumes. The two steps travel together precisely because of the collision described above; DASMA's own note is that “using an automatic operator to open a door while manually locked can cause damage to both the door and operator.” If your door isn't wind-rated and didn't come with that lock, none of this applies to you, and the sheet does not suggest adding one.

What does help on an ordinary opener-equipped door: the opener's lock mode for absences, and disconnecting the trolley with the door closed if you genuinely want the door immobile for a long trip. Both achieve the aim without leaving something for the motor to fight.

One more piece worth knowing about — the bracket where the opener arm attaches to the top section. That's the point everything concentrates on, and reinforcing that section with a proper strut is a real structural improvement on a light door. It isn't a lock, but it's the part that fails first when the door is loaded from the top.

How you can tell: You're deciding between fitting a lock and leaving well alone, and the deciding factor is whether the door has a motor on it.

The fix
  1. Establish first whether this door has an opener. That single fact decides the whole approach.
  2. On a manual door, fit or restore a side lock, and lubricate it with silicone or white lithium grease so it still works in a year.
  3. On an opener-equipped door, leave the manual lock out of service and use the opener's lock mode instead.
  4. For a long absence with an opener, disconnect the trolley with the door closed first, then use a bolt if you want one.
  5. Ask us about a strut on the top section if your door is light-gauge and unreinforced — it's a structural improvement rather than a lock.
  6. Make sure everyone in the house understands the rule: on an ordinary opener-equipped door, the mechanical lock and the opener never get used at the same time. The one carve-out is a wind-rated door with a factory manual lock before a high wind event, and even then DASMA has you disconnect the operator while it's locked and unlock it before anyone touches a remote.

You’ll know it’s right when: The locking approach matches the door — a bar on a manual door, the opener's own lock mode on a powered one, and no combination of the two.

Where to stop: Don't fit a lock to an opener-equipped door as a security upgrade. We repair the results of that a few times a year, and a bowed top section doesn't get unbent.

Take away the view

Basic check

Opportunistic attention needs something to fix on, and a garage full of visible equipment supplies it. Removing the view is cheap and it works better than it sounds like it should.

The obvious version is the windows in the door. Plenty of doors have a row of glazing in the top section, and on a raised driveway or a sloped lot they sit at exactly the right height to look straight in from the sidewalk. Frosted film, an obscure glazing insert, or a simple interior cover deals with that permanently.

The less obvious version is what's visible in the minute or two the door is open. Bikes on the wall facing the street, a tool chest at the front, a locked case that's obviously a locked case. Moving the valuable things to the back, or behind a curtain of shelving, changes what a passing glance collects.

Same logic applies to the outside. Packaging left at the curb for a new appliance or a new bike announces exactly what's now in the garage.

How you can tell: Stand on the sidewalk and look at your garage — with the door closed, and again with it open. Note what you can see and how long it took.

The fix
  1. Check whether the door's windows give a view in from the street or the sidewalk, particularly on a sloped lot.
  2. Frost or film the glazing, or fit obscure inserts. It costs little and it's permanent.
  3. Move bikes, tools and equipment away from the door line so they aren't the first thing visible when it opens.
  4. Store high-value items where they aren't in the sightline from the driveway at all.
  5. Break down and get rid of packaging rather than leaving it at the curb advertising what arrived.
  6. Do the same review for any window in the garage wall or the service door.

You’ll know it’s right when: Nothing valuable is visible from the street with the door closed, and very little is visible in the moments it's open.

Where to stop: Don't block the door's windows with anything that could interfere with the door's operation or with the photo eyes' sightline. Film and inserts are fine; propped panels are not.

Light and sightlines

Basic check

Cheap, effective, and consistently underrated.

An unlit driveway with a dark approach beside the garage is a working environment. A motion light that comes on across the whole apron takes that away, and it does something else that's easy to overlook: it tells the household that someone is out there. Half the value is the notification, not the illumination.

The other half is sightlines. Oleander, a big bougainvillea, or a citrus tree grown out over the years can screen the side of a garage from the street and from the neighbors completely. Cutting that back is free and it removes the cover that makes an approach comfortable.

And there's a maintenance point that belongs here: the opener's own light. Most units run their light for a few minutes after any operation, and a burnt bulb means the garage stays dark when someone opens the door at night. It's a two-minute fix that people leave for months.

How you can tell: Walk the driveway and the side of the garage after dark and see what's lit, what isn't, and what's screened from view.

The fix
  1. Fit motion lighting covering the driveway apron and the approach along the side of the garage.
  2. Cut back planting that screens the garage's side or the service door from the street and neighbors.
  3. Replace the opener's light bulb if it's out, and use a bulb rated for the vibration and heat a garage ceiling produces.
  4. Check the service door's approach is lit — it's the entry point people focus on least and it's usually the more private one.
  5. Consider a camera at the driveway if you already have a system, though the light does more of the work than most people expect.
  6. Look at the whole approach at night rather than just the door. The route matters as much as the destination.

You’ll know it’s right when: The driveway, the side of the garage and the service door approach are all lit and visible, and the opener's own light works.

Where to stop: Nothing risky here. Just don't aim a motion light so it shines directly at the door's photo eyes from outside — bright light on a sensor lens is a known way to cause a door to refuse to close.

Know when the door moves

Basic check

The last piece, and it turns a lot of the rest into something you can rely on rather than hope for.

Connected openers send a notification when the door opens, and can alert you if it has been left open for a set period. That closes the specific gap that causes most garage losses in this valley: a door open for hours because nobody realized. It also gives you the ability to close it from wherever you are, which turns an eight-hour exposure into a two-minute one.

If your opener isn't connected, a standalone sensor on the door reporting to a home security system does the same job, and there are simple tilt sensors that do nothing but report open or closed.

Two caveats worth stating. Notifications only work if you act on them, and an alert that gets swiped away for a month is worse than none because it creates false confidence. And a connected opener adds an account to look after — use a password you don't use anywhere else, and turn on whatever second factor is offered.

How you can tell: You've come home to a garage standing open and had no idea how long it had been that way.

The fix
  1. Turn on open notifications if your opener supports them, and set the left-open alert to a threshold you'll actually react to.
  2. If the opener isn't connected, add a tilt or contact sensor tied to whatever monitoring you already have.
  3. Test that closing the door remotely actually works before you rely on it while away.
  4. Use a unique password on the account and enable a second factor if it's offered.
  5. Review which accounts have access — a shared login from a previous owner or a tenant is the same problem as an unaccounted-for remote.
  6. Combine it with a timer-to-close so the door shuts itself even if nobody sees the alert.

You’ll know it’s right when: You'd know within minutes if the door were open when it shouldn't be, and you could do something about it from where you are.

Where to stop: Remote closing has an obvious hazard: you're operating a moving door without seeing what's under it. Only use it when you're confident the garage is empty, and never as a way to close a door you already know is misbehaving.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself

  • A screwdriver and three-inch screws — reinforcing the strike plate on the interior door is the highest-value twenty minutes in this whole subject
  • Frosted window film — takes the view away permanently for very little, and it's reversible if you sell
  • A motion light — the deterrent value and the notification value are both real, and it's ordinary electrical work
  • Silicone spray or white lithium grease — for a slide bolt on a manual door, so it still works the year after you fit it
  • Your opener's manual — the learn button, the lock mode and the timer-to-close are all in it, and most households have never opened it

Things not to do — and why

× Don't fit a manual lock to a door with an opener

The motor can't tell the door is pinned and pulls anyway. The load concentrates at the top section where the arm attaches, and that section bends permanently. It's the most common self-inflicted door damage we see.

× Don't disable the emergency release

It's how you get out of a garage during a power failure, and outages here come with the monsoon and arrive in the evening. Shield it, shorten the cord, close the header gap — but it has to still work from inside under a firm pull.

× Don't leave a remote in a car parked outside

It's a key to the house sitting on the driveway. This is the single most common way a garage is opened without any force being involved.

× Don't leave the door partly open for airflow

A propped door gives up everything else on this page, and it's usually done in the evening when the street is quietest. It also isn't a securable position — a partly open door can be worked with in ways a closed one can't.

× Don't skip the interior door because it faces indoors

A hollow-core door with a privacy knob is the last barrier between a garage and the house, and it's the weakest lock most homes have. Solid door, deadbolt, long screws into framing.

× Don't assume you know how many remotes are paired

Bought the house, rented it out, had work done — any of those means devices you've never seen may still be paired. Erasing all devices and re-pairing what you hold takes a few minutes.

× Don't rely on an alert nobody acts on

A left-open notification that gets dismissed by habit is worse than not having one, because it produces confidence without protection. Pair it with a timer-to-close so something happens whether or not anyone looks.

× Don't aim a motion light at the door's photo eyes

Bright light on a sensor lens from outside is a known cause of a door refusing to close, and a door that won't close is the opposite of the thing you were trying to achieve.

What's different about garages here

The security picture in this valley is shaped by how houses are built and how people live in them.

Almost every home around Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler and Queen Creek has an attached garage, and for most households the garage door is the primary entrance — the front door barely gets used. That means the garage isn't a shed at the bottom of the yard, it's the main way in and out, with everything that implies about how often it's open and how much traffic goes through it.

It's also a storage room for exactly the things people are careless with. Bikes and e-bikes, golf clubs, coolers, tools, a second refrigerator, camping and off-road gear. Concentrated, portable, and easy to move on.

Then there's the climate, which pushes households toward habits that undo everything else. Leaving the door up a foot on a summer evening for airflow is common, understandable, and hands over the whole perimeter at the hours when nobody is watching.

  • The garage is the front door here — which is why habits and alerts outperform hardware. It's open far more often than a front door would be.
  • Evening ventilation is the local weak point — a door propped open for airflow is the version of this we hear about most, and it happens at the quietest hours.
  • Monsoon outages make the release non-negotiable — the power drops in the evening several times a season, and the release is how anyone gets a car or themselves out. Never defeat it.
  • A dead backup battery means a garage that can't open in an outage — DASMA's TDS #385 puts opener battery life at two to five years depending on usage and type, and tells you to test it periodically rather than assume. Our own field observation, not a published figure, is that Valley garages tend to land at the short end of that.
  • Visor remotes cook and get forgotten — the remote clipped in a car parked outside all day is both a security gap and a battery that fails early.
  • Detached shops are quieter than they look — on larger lots around Queen Creek and Gold Canyon, a detached garage is genuinely out of earshot, and physical locking earns its place there in a way it doesn't on an attached, opener-equipped door.

The habits that hold it together

Hardware degrades, habits don't. These are the ones that matter.

  • Watch the door close before you drive away — it takes seconds, and it removes the single most common way a garage ends up standing open all day.
  • Lock the interior door at night and when you're out — the deadbolt only counts on the nights somebody throws it.
  • Take a remote out of any car that parks outside — either move it indoors or switch to a keychain remote that stays with you.
  • Change the keypad code after anyone temporary has had it — contractors, house sitters, a previous tenant. It takes two minutes and nobody ever does it.
  • Test the emergency release twice a year with the door closed, and confirm anything you've added to shield it still lets it operate from inside.
  • Break the propped-door habit — use a fan or a ventilation option that doesn't involve handing over the whole opening on a summer evening.
  • Review paired remotes when the household changes — new car, sold car, tenant moved out, work finished. Each of those is a reason to erase and re-pair.

How a garage becomes the weak point

Each step here removes a layer, and the last one is where the loss actually happens.

The chain is worth reading backwards. Almost everyone starts at the last step, because that's the dramatic one — and the leverage is at the first three.

  • Take a manual lock properly out of service on an opener-equipped door, or restore one on a manual door
  • Fit a reinforcing strut to a light top section where the opener arm concentrates load
  • Check the safety sensors and reversal, since a door that refuses to close is a door that ends up left open

What drives the cost

Most of the effective items here are free or nearly so. What costs money is hardware, and the hardware isn't the highest-value part.

  • How much is habit versus hardware The top of this page — closing the door, locking the interior door, moving a remote — costs nothing and does the most. Be suspicious of any plan that starts with a purchase.
  • The interior door A solid door, a deadbolt and a reinforced strike is carpentry rather than garage door work, and it's the best value in this whole subject.
  • Release shielding and header trim Small parts and a short visit, and the trim work closes the perimeter for dust and water at the same time.
  • Opener age A fixed-code opener is a reliability problem and an access-control problem at once. Replacement is a bigger number but it addresses both.
  • Struts and door reinforcement A light-gauge door with an unreinforced top section is worth strengthening. It's parts and labor, and it helps with wind loading and opener stress as well.
