myQ Camera Not Working? Why the Video Won't Load
There's a detail here that explains almost everything else on this page. Telling your opener to close the door is a handful of bytes and takes a moment. Streaming live video from the garage ceiling is a continuous, demanding connection that has to hold up for as long as you're watching. A Wi-Fi signal that's comfortably good enough for the first is very often not good enough for the second, which is why the most common version of this complaint is a door that works perfectly from the app alongside a camera that won't load. The camera isn't broken. It's being asked to do something the connection can't support.

1Confirm the door itself still works from the app
Open and close it remotely and watch whether the app reports the state change promptly. If the door responds normally, the opener's connection to your network and to the service is sound, and the problem is specific to video rather than to connectivity in general.

2Measure the signal where the opener actually is
Stand on a ladder next to the powerhead with a phone and look at the Wi-Fi indicator, or use a signal strength app. Do it at ceiling height, not from the floor and not from the driveway. A garage door is a large sheet of metal and it does interesting things to a signal depending on whether it's open or closed.

3Look at the lens
It's a small piece of plastic on a ceiling in a dusty room. Get a torch on it and look for a film of silt, a spider web, or paint overspray. This is the single most overlooked cause and it takes ten seconds to rule out.

4Check what your plan actually includes
Live view and recorded video are separate things, and recorded clips are a paid feature. If your complaint is that you can't look back at earlier footage rather than that live view is broken, the answer may be in your subscription rather than in your hardware. Check inside the app rather than taking anyone's word for what your plan covers.

Is the door working from the app?
One question splits this cleanly, because it tells you whether the opener is connected at all.
One in-between case worth knowing: an opener on a marginal connection can pass door commands reliably and drop video, and it can also report itself online while being anything but. If the door works but slowly and unpredictably, treat that as a connection problem rather than a camera one.

A door command is a tiny message. Your phone sends a few bytes to a server, the server passes them to the opener, and the opener acts. Even a poor connection handles that, because it only has to work once and it doesn't matter much if it takes an extra second. Status updates are similarly small.
Live video is a different category of demand. It's a continuous stream that has to be encoded, sent, and kept flowing for the entire time you're watching, and if the connection can't sustain the required rate the stream either never establishes or drops out partway. There's no graceful degradation to a still image — you get a spinning circle and then a timeout.
Now consider where the camera is. It sits on a garage ceiling, which is typically the furthest point in the house from the router, usually behind at least one interior wall and often behind stucco with wire lath in it. And there's a large steel panel a few feet away that moves. A signal that measures adequately with the door open can measure quite differently with it closed, which is why some people find video works in the afternoon and not overnight.
There's a second layer worth understanding, and it's where a lot of confusion comes from. Live view and recorded video are separate features. Watching what's happening now and looking back at what happened this morning are handled differently, and recorded footage is a paid feature. Someone who can't scroll back through clips doesn't necessarily have a broken camera — they may have a plan that never included that. The app is the place to check that, and it's worth checking before you troubleshoot hardware.
So the honest framing is that a myQ camera failure is usually a network problem wearing a camera's clothes. Fix where the signal is weakest and most of these resolve without anyone touching the opener.

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
There isn't enough bandwidth at the opener for video
Basic checkThe headline cause, and the one that explains why the door works while the camera doesn't. Openers use the 2.4 GHz band because it travels further through walls, and it carries less data than 5 GHz in exchange. Put that in a garage at the far end of a stucco house, add a router sitting in a media cabinet at the other end, and you've a link that passes commands happily and can't sustain a video stream. Your upload speed matters too, since video from the camera goes outward, and upload is usually the smaller half of a home connection.
How you can tell: The door works from the app without complaint. The camera shows a loading indicator and then times out, or plays for a few seconds and freezes. It's often better when you're on the same home network than when you're away.
- Take a phone up a ladder to the powerhead and check the signal there, with the garage door both open and closed. Note the difference.
- Test on your home Wi-Fi and then on cellular data away from the house, since that tells you whether the bottleneck is at the camera or at your phone.
- Check your internet plan's upload speed rather than the download figure that gets advertised. Video from the camera uses upload.
- Move the router if it's in a cabinet, behind a television, or in a far corner. Height and open air both help more than people expect.
- Add a mesh node in the garage or the nearest room to it. This is the fix that actually works, rather than the one that nearly works.
- Restart the router, then power cycle the opener at the receptacle, and give both a few minutes to settle before testing again.
You’ll know it’s right when: Live view opens within a few seconds and holds steady for a minute or more, with the door both open and closed.
The connection is unstable rather than weak
Basic checkA different problem with similar symptoms. Signal strength can look fine while the connection is still unreliable, usually because of interference or because your router is doing something the opener doesn't cope with. The 2.4 GHz band is crowded — microwaves, older cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, and every neighbor's router share it. Combined networks are another frequent culprit: if your router presents both bands under a single name, the opener may keep trying to associate with a 5 GHz radio it can't use.
How you can tell: Video establishes and then drops out, or works at some times of day and not others. The app may show the opener flipping between online and offline. Frequently worse in the evening when everything in the neighborhood is competing on the same channels.
- Check whether your router presents 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name. If so, look for a setting to split them, or to make the 2.4 GHz network separately visible.
- Change the 2.4 GHz channel in your router settings. Channels 1, 6 and 11 don't overlap, and moving off a congested one often helps immediately.
- Look at what else lives near the opener or the router — a microwave, a cordless phone base, or a large metal appliance in the signal path.
- Check for router features that interfere with device connections, such as client isolation, AP isolation, or aggressive band steering.
- If the network name or password has changed at any point, reconnect the opener rather than assuming it followed the change.

The lens is filmed, obstructed, or looking at the wrong thing
Basic checkThe least technical cause on the list and one of the most common here. The camera is a small lens on a ceiling in a room that's dusty by nature, and fine silt builds a film that's genuinely hard to see until you wipe it and look at the cloth. Spiders like the warmth of the housing. Beyond dirt, cameras get blocked by things nobody thought about: a storage shelf installed later, a bike hung from the ceiling, an inflatable stored on top of a cabinet, or the door itself sitting in the frame when open.
How you can tell: Video streams normally — no loading, no timeout — and what you see is hazy, washed out, largely black, or shows something other than what you expected. Often gradual over months rather than sudden.
- Wipe the lens with a soft dry cloth. No solvents, which can haze the plastic permanently.
- Check for spider webs across the housing, which are almost invisible on camera but scatter light badly.
- Open live view on your phone while standing in the garage and look at what the camera can actually see. Move anything sitting in the frame.
- Watch the view with the door open and closed. On some installations the open door panel takes up a large part of the frame.
- For a night-time black image, check whether the infrared illumination is bouncing off something close to the lens, such as a shelf or the door itself when open. Moving the obstruction usually fixes it.
You’ll know it’s right when: The live image is clear, correctly framed, and usable both day and night.
Recorded video needs a subscription, and you're looking for recorded video
Basic checkWorth stating plainly because it saves people a lot of effort. Watching the camera live and looking back at footage from earlier are different features, and stored clips are a paid part of the service. Someone who opens the app to see what happened at two in the afternoon and finds nothing there doesn't necessarily have a fault. Plans and their names change over time, so the reliable source is the app itself rather than anything written elsewhere, including here.
How you can tell: Live view opens and works normally. What's missing is the history — no clips, no event list, or a prompt to subscribe when you tap on an event.
- Open the app's account or subscription section and look at what your current plan includes.
- Check whether you're inside a trial period that has quietly ended, which is the most common version of this.
- Confirm event recording is switched on for that camera in its settings, since it can be enabled on the plan and disabled on the device.
- Check the storage or retention period, because clips older than the retention window are gone regardless of plan.
- Decide whether recorded video is something you actually want before subscribing, rather than assuming it was meant to be included.
You’ll know it’s right when: You know exactly what your plan covers and whether the missing footage was ever going to be there.
The app's permissions or notification settings are in the way
Basic checkA surprising share of camera complaints turn out to be phone settings rather than opener settings. If the app hasn't been granted notification permission, alerts never arrive and the camera appears to be doing nothing. Battery optimisation on a phone can suspend the app in the background, which delays or suppresses everything. Local network permission matters too, since some apps need it to stream directly when you're at home rather than routing through the internet.
How you can tell: Video works fine when you open the app deliberately, and nothing arrives on its own. Or video works when you're away from home but not on your own Wi-Fi, which points at local network permission.
- Open your phone's settings for the app and confirm notifications are permitted, including the alert types you want.
- Check local network permission is granted, which matters for streaming while you're on the same Wi-Fi as the opener.
- Exclude the app from aggressive battery optimisation, which is a common cause of missing or badly delayed alerts.
- Inside the app, check that alerts are enabled for that specific camera and that any quiet hours or schedules aren't covering the times you care about.
- Sign out and back in, then update the app, since permission behavior changes between versions.
- Try a different phone on the same account, which quickly separates a device problem from an account or hardware one.

The camera is switched off, hidden, or on somebody else's account
Basic checkTwo situations here. The first is settings: many apps let a camera be disabled, paused, or put into a privacy mode, and it's easy to do accidentally or to leave that way after somebody set it deliberately. The second is ownership, which is the one that catches people who bought a house. A myQ device stays registered to whoever set it up, and until the previous owner or the builder releases it, a new account can't fully add it. The door can sometimes be controlled while the camera stays stubbornly absent.
How you can tell: The camera doesn't appear in the app at all, appears but greyed out, or the app reports the device is already registered to another account.
- Check the camera's settings in the app for a disabled state, a privacy mode, or a schedule that turns it off.
- Confirm you're signed into the account that owns the device rather than a second account or a shared guest login.
- If you've shared access from someone else's account, check what permissions that share includes, since camera access isn't always part of it.
- For a newly purchased home, contact the previous owner or the builder and ask them to remove the device from their account.
- Where that's not possible, follow the manufacturer's own process for transferring a device rather than a workaround from a forum.
- After a transfer, expect to set the camera up from scratch, including its network connection.

The camera or Wi-Fi module has actually failed
Hands-on — moderate riskLast on the list because it's last in likelihood, but it does happen and heat is why. The module lives on a garage ceiling that passes 130°F in July, and camera sensors, image processors and Wi-Fi radios aren't fond of that. A failing module tends to give a run of increasingly poor behavior before it goes entirely — video that degrades, connections that drop, a unit that becomes unreachable in the afternoon and returns in the evening. Surge damage from a monsoon storm is the other route, and that one usually arrives abruptly.
How you can tell: Everything above has been eliminated: signal is strong at the opener, the lens is clean, permissions are granted, and the plan covers what you're asking for. The camera is still unreachable, or the opener won't connect at all despite a good network.
- Power cycle the opener at the receptacle for a full minute, which is more thorough than a soft restart in the app.
- Check whether a firmware update is pending or stalled, since a partial update can leave the module in a poor state.
- Note whether the failure correlates with temperature — working mornings and failing afternoons is a strong hint at heat rather than software.
- Note whether it began at a storm, which points at a surge rather than gradual failure.
- Try connecting it to a phone hotspot placed close to the opener, which removes your home network from the picture entirely.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself
- A stepladder — signal has to be measured at the opener, and the lens has to be cleaned there too
- Your phone — doubles as a signal meter at ceiling height and as a live view screen while you check the framing
- A soft dry cloth — for the lens — no solvents, they haze the plastic permanently
- A flashlight — dust film and spider webs on a lens are invisible until you light them from an angle
- Router access — the channel, band, and isolation settings are where the real fixes live
Things not to do — and why
It clears remote pairings and settings along with the network configuration, so you end up reprogramming every remote and keypad to solve a camera problem. Try a power cycle at the receptacle first.
What matters is the strength at ceiling height beside the powerhead, with the garage door closed. A large steel panel a few feet away changes the picture significantly.
It hazes and crazes the plastic, and a permanently clouded lens is a worse outcome than the dust you started with. A dry cloth is what it needs.
A plan covers recorded footage. If live view itself won't load, paying for storage changes nothing, and it's worth being clear which of the two you're missing before spending anything.
It depends on your internet, your power, and a service being available. Treat it as one useful layer alongside a door that latches properly and an emergency release cord that can't be fished from outside.
If your router presents both bands under one name, the opener may keep reaching for a 5 GHz radio it can't use. It's the single most common configuration problem with these units.
It's a wide-angle camera on a ceiling, and things that seem well out of the way are frequently in the frame or bouncing the infrared straight back at night.
What makes this harder here
Two local factors matter more than people expect. The first is heat. - Garages here are far from the router — the typical single-storey Valley layout puts the garage at one end and the router at the other, which is why a mesh node so often solves this.
- Summer grid load matters too — brownouts and short interruptions leave routers and modules in odd states, and a power cycle of both is a reasonable first move after a rough afternoon.
Keeping it working
Most of this is about the network and the ceiling rather than the camera itself.
- Put a mesh node near the garage — the single most effective thing you can do. Video needs headroom, and a strong signal at the opener gives it.
- Keep the 2.4 GHz band separately available — a merged network is the most common configuration cause of these problems, and splitting it takes a few minutes in the router.
- Wipe the lens twice a year and after dust storms — soft dry cloth, no solvent. It goes on the same list as the safety sensor lenses.
- Keep the camera's view clear — check what it can actually see when you rearrange the garage, especially when hanging things from the ceiling.
- Fit surge protection at the panel — it protects the Wi-Fi module along with everything else in the house, which matters in monsoon season.
- Keep the app and firmware current — update on your own schedule rather than in the middle of needing it, and give a firmware update time to finish.
- Note the account the device belongs to — write it down somewhere. It matters a great deal if you sell the house or the opener needs replacing.
