Garage Door Opener Light Stays On? Here's Why
The door works perfectly, but the opener light burns away all day and all night. It's not dangerous and it won't damage anything quickly, though it does cook the bulb and it does irritate anybody trying to sleep over the garage. Nearly every case comes down to one of four things: a duration setting turned up further than you realized, a motion sensor built into a newer wall panel, a wall button whose contacts have stopped releasing, or a control wire touching something it shouldn't. Ruling them out takes about ten minutes.
This is general guidance based on what we see on service calls — it isn’t a substitute for someone looking at your actual door. Every door is a little different, and if anything here feels beyond what you want to take on, stop and give us a call.

Three checks, and one of them almost certainly has your answer.

1Time it properly
Run the door, then leave the garage and don't move around in it. Note how long the light actually stays on. A light that goes out after four or five minutes is behaving normally and set long. A light that's still burning an hour later is a genuine fault.

2Stand still, or leave entirely
Newer wall controls have motion detection built in and switch the opener light on whenever they sense movement. If you're pottering in the garage, the timer keeps restarting and the light never gets a chance to go out. Walk away and watch from the doorway for five minutes.

3Disconnect the wall button at the opener
Take both wall control wires off their terminals at the powerhead and cap the ends so they can't touch. Your remotes will still work. If the light goes out and stays out, the button or its wire is the fault and you've found it in one move.

4Check the app
Connected openers usually expose the light as a controllable device, which means an automation, a voice command, or a smart-home routine can hold it on. Look for anything that turns the light on and never turns it off.

One test splits the whole page
The light circuit is triggered either by the opener's own logic or by the wall control. This tells you which.
Cap the loose ends properly while you test — bare low-voltage conductors touching each other will run the door, which rather defeats the purpose of the experiment.

The opener's light isn't wired to a switch on the wall the way a room light is. It's controlled by the logic board, which turns it on in response to events and then starts a countdown. Anything that generates one of those events restarts the countdown, which is why a light that never goes out is usually a light being retriggered rather than a light that's stuck.
There are more triggers than most people realize. Running the door is the obvious one. Pressing the light button on the wall panel is another. On newer multi-function wall controls there's a motion sensor built into the panel, which turns the light on whenever it detects movement in the garage — a genuinely useful feature that also happens to be the single most common reason people think their light has failed. And on connected openers, an app or a voice assistant can switch the light as a device in its own right.
Then there's the wall control's wiring. Those two low-voltage conductors run down the wall to the button, and the opener reads a closed circuit between them as a press. It doesn't know whether that closure came from a finger, a stuck contact, a staple driven through the insulation, or moisture creeping across a terminal. From the board's point of view, somebody has their thumb on the button and hasn't taken it off — so the light stays on and the countdown never starts.
That's the whole mechanism, and it's why the disconnect test at the top of the page is so effective. Take the wall control out of the circuit and you've eliminated three of the six causes in a single step.
So the question to answer isn't “why won't it turn off” — it's “what keeps telling it to turn on.”

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
The light timer is set long
Basic checkThe dullest answer and a surprisingly frequent one. Openers let you choose how long the light runs after an event, and the longest option on some units is generous enough that people conclude it's never going off. Add somebody moving in and out of the garage a few times, each pass restarting the countdown, and a five-minute setting can easily produce twenty minutes of continuous light. Settings also get changed without anyone touching a menu — some openers restore factory defaults after a power cut, and light duration is often part of that.
How you can tell: Time it with the garage empty and undisturbed. If the light goes out on its own after a few minutes, this is your answer and there's nothing wrong.
- Run the door, then leave and stay out of the garage. Watch from the doorway.
- Note the elapsed time when it goes out. That number should match one of the menu options.
- Look for the light-duration setting: on the multi-function wall control first, then on the powerhead, then in the app. Not every unit puts it in all three places.
- Set it shorter if you want it shorter. There's no downside beyond having less light on the way to the car.
- Check it again after any power outage, since defaults can come back.

The wall panel's motion sensor is doing its job
Basic checkSeveral current wall controls have motion detection built in, and it switches the opener light on whenever it senses movement. It's a good feature — walking into a dark garage with your hands full and having the light come on is genuinely pleasant — but it produces exactly the complaint on this page, because every pass through the garage restarts the timer. It also picks up things that aren't people. A cat, a dog, a curtain of hot air rising off a car that's just been driven, or a fan moving air across the sensor's field will all set it off. That's why some households see the light cycling on and off with nobody in the building.
How you can tell: The light comes on reliably when you walk in and goes out some minutes after you leave. Look at the wall panel — a small lens or a distinct sensor window on the face is the giveaway.
- Confirm what you have by walking into the garage from the house and watching whether the light comes on before you touch anything.
- Look through the wall panel's menu for a motion or auto-light setting. On most panels with this feature it can be switched off or its sensitivity reduced.
- If the light triggers with nobody there, think about what's moving in its field of view: a pet, a ceiling fan, a car cooling down, or air from a vent.
- Consider whether the panel is mounted where it looks straight down the length of the garage — a wide field of view catches more than you'd want.
- If you like the feature but not the duration, shorten the light timer instead of switching the sensor off.

The wall button's contacts have stuck
Basic checkA wall button is a simple switch, and simple switches fail simply. The contacts inside can stay closed after a press — from wear, from grit that's worked in, from a heat-softened plastic actuator that's taken a set, or from a bug that's crawled in and died across the contacts, which happens more than anyone wants to think about. The opener reads a permanently closed circuit as a permanently held button, so the light stays on. On some units the door won't respond properly either, because the opener believes a command is already in progress.
How you can tell: Press the button and feel it. It should click and spring back crisply. A mushy, silent or slow-returning button is finished. Disconnecting the wall control at the opener makes the light behave immediately.
- Unplug the opener before working at the terminals.
- Disconnect both wall control wires from the powerhead and cap the ends separately so they can't touch.
- Plug the opener back in and see whether the light times out normally. If it does, the fault is in the button or the wire.
- Unscrew the wall control from the wall and look inside for grit, corrosion, insects, or a cracked actuator.
- Press and release the button several times while watching the light. An intermittent stick often shows itself under repetition.
- Replace the panel if it doesn't return cleanly. It's an inexpensive part and there's no meaningful repair for a worn contact.

The control wire is shorting somewhere along its run
Hands-on — moderate riskSame effect as a stuck button, different location. The pair of low-voltage wires running from the opener to the wall control passes staples, shelf brackets, corners and anything else that's been mounted to that wall over the years. A staple driven through the jacket, a pinch behind a bracket, rodent damage, or moisture wicking into an exterior keypad's terminals will bridge the two conductors, and the opener reads that as a press it never received. A partial short is worse than a complete one, because it comes and goes as the garage heats through the day — which produces a light that's on all afternoon and fine by morning.
How you can tell: The light behaves properly with the wall wires disconnected but not with them connected, and the button itself feels fine. Watch for the more serious version of the same fault: if the door has also started running on its own, that's the same short and it deserves more urgency than the light does.
- With the opener unplugged, disconnect the wall wires and confirm the light times out.
- Then disconnect the wires at the wall control end instead and reconnect at the opener. If the fault returns with only the wire in circuit, the damage is in the run rather than the panel.
- Trace the wire with a flashlight, looking for staples through the insulation, crush points behind shelving, kinks at corners, and green corrosion at the ends.
- Wiggle sections while watching the light. An intermittent short usually reveals itself under gentle movement.
- Check any exterior keypad's housing for moisture, dust or insects across the contacts.
- Replace a damaged section rather than taping it. Tape in a hot garage doesn't stay stuck.

An app, accessory, or voice assistant is holding the light on
Basic checkOn connected openers the light is exposed as its own controllable device, which means anything on your network can switch it. A routine that turns the garage light on at dusk with no matching rule to turn it off, a voice command that got interpreted as the opener's light rather than a lamp, a security system's away mode, or a third-party controller with its own lighting logic will all do it. This one is easy to miss because the opener itself is behaving perfectly — it's being told to keep the light on and it's obeying.
How you can tell: The light stays on with the wall control disconnected, but switching it off from the app works and it stays off until whatever triggers it fires again. The behavior usually started in the same week the opener was linked to something.
- Open the opener's app and try turning the light off from there. If it obeys, the circuit is fine and something is commanding it.
- Read the activity log if the model keeps one — it often names what issued each command.
- Go through the automations and routines in that app and switch off anything touching the light.
- Check the other platforms separately. A voice assistant or home hub routine won't appear in the opener's own automation list.
- Look at any third-party controller wired to the opener. Some have their own lighting rules that run independently.
- If you can't find it, unlink the opener from everything, change the account password, and add back only what you use.

The light relay on the board has stuck closed
High risk — call a technicianThe last one to reach, and the only one that genuinely needs us. The light circuit is switched by a relay on the logic board, and relays fail in two directions. Failing open leaves you with a light that never comes on. Failing closed — contacts pitted and welded together after enough switching cycles, or damaged by a surge — leaves you with a light that never goes off, because the switch is physically stuck in the on position. Heat accelerates this, and openers here spend their summers in air that would count as extreme almost anywhere else.
How you can tell: The light stays on with the wall control disconnected, with the motion sensor off, with no app connected, and with the light-duration setting confirmed. Unplugging the opener is the only thing that stops it. Sometimes the opener has begun behaving oddly in other ways too.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself
- A clock or your phone's timer — the actual duration is the whole diagnosis, and impressions are unreliable
- A stepladder — the terminals, the settings and the bulb all live at the powerhead
- A small flat screwdriver — opener terminal screws and the wall panel's mounting screws
- Wire nuts or electrical tape — for capping the wall control leads separately while you test with them disconnected
- A flashlight — for tracing the control wire and looking inside the wall panel
- Your phone camera — photograph the terminal block before you disconnect anything, so it goes back exactly as it was
Things not to do — and why
Bridging the wrong pair while the unit is live runs the door, and you're on a ladder underneath it. Unplugging takes two seconds.
Two loose conductors touching each other is a permanent button press, which is the exact fault you're trying to rule out — and it will run the door while you're standing under it.
Adhesive doesn't survive a garage summer here. The tape lets go, the fault comes back, and you've spent the intervening months assuming it was fixed.
It's the fastest way to cook both the bulb and the socket. If you can't resolve the trigger straight away, take the bulb out — it costs you nothing and it stops the heat.
Running continuously already means more heat than the housing was designed to shed. Exceeding the printed wattage limit on top of that is how sockets end up scorched.
The screws aren't interchangeable on every board, and getting it wrong can damage the logic board — turning a nuisance light into the most expensive repair on the opener.
The local angle
This is a mild problem almost everywhere. It's slightly less mild here, because of what a continuously burning bulb does inside a plastic lens cover hanging in the hottest air in the building.
- A bulb that never rests cooks itself and its socket — ceiling air in a closed Mesa garage runs well past 130°F in July, and an enclosed fixture already struggles to shed heat. Adding continuous operation is what turns a light problem into a scorched socket.
- Heat softens wall button actuators — the plastic parts inside a wall control take a set after enough summers, and a button that no longer springs back reads as a permanent press.
- Thermal cycling works on the control wire — a garage that swings sixty degrees between afternoon and dawn moves everything in it, which is why a marginal short often shows a daily rhythm: light on all afternoon, fine by morning.
- Motion sensors pick up moving hot air — a car that's just come in off the asphalt throws off a rising column of heat, and a panel-mounted detector will often read it as movement long after everybody has gone inside.
- Monsoon surges weld relay contacts — a relay that fails closed after a storm is the specific version of this that needs us, and storm season is when it turns up.
- Dust settles inside wall controls — fine silt gets everywhere here, including across the contacts of a button mounted on an open wall.
Keeping it settled
Not much maintenance to speak of, but a few habits keep this from coming back.
- Set the light timer where you actually want it — and check it again after any power outage, since defaults can return without anyone touching a menu.
- Decide deliberately about the motion sensor — it's a good feature or an irritation depending on the household. Either is fine; drifting into it by accident is what causes the confusion.
- Replace a wall button that's lost its click — a mushy button is on its way to sticking closed, and it's an inexpensive part to change before it does.
- Route the control wire out of harm's way — clipped rather than stapled, away from shelving, and not where a bike handlebar or a shovel can reach it.
- Use a bulb built for the fixture — rough service or an opener-rated LED. A light that occasionally runs long is much less of a problem with the right bulb in it.
- Audit your automations once a year — routines that switch the light on without a matching rule to switch it off accumulate quietly.
Where this can lead
On its own it's a nuisance. What it sometimes precedes is worth knowing.
The reason we'd rather you chased this than lived with it is the second step. A control wire shorting enough to hold the light on is a control wire that can close the circuit hard enough to run the door, and that's a different order of problem.
When to call
Call if the light stays on with the wall control disconnected and no automation explains it; if the door has also started running on its own; if you can see damage to the control wire inside a finished wall; or if there's any smell of hot plastic around the powerhead. Otherwise this is genuinely a job most people finish themselves in an afternoon, and we'd rather say so.
