Plank Wood Grain — Safe-Way steel garage door installed by Farnsworth Garage Door Service in Phoenix, Arizona

About the Plank Wood Grain

The Plank Wood Grain is the modern half of Safe-Way's woodgrain-imaging program. Where the Bi-Directional door plays traditional panel geometry, the Plank goes horizontal: clean flush faces (Regency model 266, Ambient model 286) or pencil-groove plank lines (models 274 and 275) that read like laid timber planks across the full width of the door. On a modern-farmhouse or desert-contemporary elevation, it's the door that finishes the design sentence.

The finish is the same high-resolution woodgrain imaging digitally transferred to steel, in four tones built for this aesthetic: Vintage (weathered grey-brown), Cedar (warm mid), Mahogany (rich dark red), and Charcoal (near-black modern). Underneath is a full Regency (R-10.25 polystyrene) or Ambient (R-17.68 polyurethane with thermal break) sandwich, and windows include the modern Slim Line layout alongside the Estate Series designs — frames in complementary colors or black. Warranty follows the underlying series per Safe-Way's brochures.

Safe-Way's own gallery shows these doors on everything from mountain-modern customs to updated ranch homes, and the Cedar and Mahogany tones photograph remarkably like the real thing. Compare the traditional-geometry Bi-Directional Wood Grain and the real-cedar Woodie Plank at the same consultation — the three doors bracket the entire wood-look decision.

Both Plank designs are also published as engineered wind-load builds on the Regency and Ambient bases, rated to 120, 130, and 140 mph. Open-lot builds in Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, and Maricopa can have the modern plank look and the storm rating together — the details are further down this page.

Window & Glass Options

Windows are the design choice that changes a garage door most. Safe-Way offers a deep catalog of insert styles and glass finishes for this collection — arched toppers, rows of small panes, clean modern grids, tinted or privacy glass. The window and glass brochures in the Downloads section below show every insert style and glass finish full size, and we'll walk the options with you at your Phoenix-area consultation before you commit.

Decorative Hardware

Safe-Way's decorative hardware kits — hinge straps, pull handles, knockers, and clavos — are hand-forged black powder-coated steel with a hammered look. On a carriage-house door especially, they're what turn a good-looking door into a signature front-of-house detail. If a kit isn't shown here, ask us — Safe-Way makes more styles than we can fit on one page, and we'll help you match a kit to your door at the consultation.

Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain Wind Load Options — 120, 130 & 140 MPH Rated Builds

Wind load isn’t a different door — it’s an engineered version of the Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain you’re already looking at. If you’re building or replacing on an open lot in Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Maricopa, or the newer edges of Mesa and Gilbert, this is the option worth asking about.

Your garage door is the largest moving component on your house, and it’s the one a building inspector cares about most in a wind event. Building codes set a design wind speed for your address, and the door has to be rated to hold that pressure. Arizona’s monsoon straight-line winds are the reason it matters here — a door that blows inward doesn’t just cost you a door. It pressurizes the house from the inside, and that’s how roofs and walls fail. Open desert lots with no windbreak take the worst of it.

Safe-Way’s answer is a reinforced build of the same series, tested rather than estimated. The panels, colors, and window options you’ve been looking at carry over — the door gains structure. Below is exactly which Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain models Safe-Way publishes wind-rated, what the build adds, and one warranty difference you should know about before you decide.

120MPH Design wind speed Design load at a 16’×7’ opening: +18.5 / -20.4 PSF Model suffix F
130MPH Design wind speed Design load at a 16’×7’ opening: +21.5 / -23.9 PSF Model suffix G
140MPH Design wind speed Design load at a 16’×7’ opening: +24.9 / -27.8 PSF Model suffix H

Wind-load models carry a rating suffix — F = 120 mph, G = 130 mph, H = 140 mph. A Model 286G, for example, is the Ambient-base flush plank Madera door built to the 130 mph rating.

Safe-Way wind-load reinforcement diagram — reinforced T-strut and commercial-duty steel rollers on a Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain garage door
Safe-Way's wind-load reinforcement package: (A) the reinforced T-strut that stiffens each section, and (B) commercial-duty steel rollers and hardware rated for heavier wind pressures.

What the wind-load build adds

  • Reinforced T-strut across the back of the sections — the primary bracing that keeps a wide door from bowing under pressure.
  • Commercial-duty steel rollers and hardware, specified to withstand heavier wind pressures than the standard build.
  • Additional interior steel reinforcements with increased hardware and springing materials, engineered per rating.

Which Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain models come wind-rated

Regency base

  • Model 266 F/G/H Flush — Madera
  • Model 274 F/G/H Pencil Groove — Madera

Ambient base

  • Model 286 F/G/H Flush — Madera
  • Model 275 F/G/H Pencil Groove — Madera

Both Plank designs — the flush plank face and the pencil-groove plank lines — are published as wind-load builds on both the Regency and Ambient bases. The modern plank look and a storm rating are not an either/or.

Warranty on wind-load builds: 15 Year

Safe-Way publishes a 15-Year warranty on the wind-load versions of these models. That's different from the standard Plank build, where the underlying Regency or Ambient sections carry Limited Lifetime rust-through coverage — worth knowing before you decide, and something we'll walk through with you in person.

We’d rather you hear this from us up front than find it in the paperwork later. Safe-Way’s full warranty document is in the brochure section further down this page.

Safe-Way wind-load doors are tested to ANSI/DASMA 108 in an approved wind chamber. Design pressures are based on the required mph wind speeds, and test pressures are run at 1.5 times the design pressure. Testing is based on exposure category C with 30 feet or less of mean roof height. Values are Safe-Way's published calculated values — your local building code sets what your address actually requires.

Not sure what your address requires? That’s a normal question — design wind speed varies lot to lot. Tell us where you are and we’ll confirm the spec, walk you through whether a wind-load Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain build makes sense for your opening, and put it in a written quote. It’s also worth a call to your homeowners insurance carrier; some Arizona carriers discount for a wind-rated door.

Warranty

Every Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain ships with the Safe-Way Consolidated Residential Warranty. Here’s what’s covered — and for how long — on the standard-build Plank Wood Grain configuration.

Non-Transferable — Original Purchaser Only
Limited Lifetime
Safe-Way's Wood Looks brochure carries the Lifetime Limited Warranty seal alongside the 10-Year Finish Warranty seal.
  • Underlying Regency / Ambient sections warranted against rust-through due to the paint finish cracking, checking, or peeling — as long as the original purchaser owns the single-family home (10 years in other residential installations)
10 Years
Original purchaser. Safe-Way's brochures state the 10-Year Finish Warranty applies to Plank graining as well as Bi-Directional.
  • Finish coverage on the Tru-Steel HD woodgrain (Madera) finish — Safe-Way prints a 10-Year Finish Warranty seal on the Wood Looks brochure and on the Bi-Directional page of the Regency and Ambient brochures, and states the warranty applies to both Bi-Directional and Plank graining
  • Madera section coverage against fading — if a section is damaged in the first 10 years and the full-price replacement section doesn't color-match the rest of the door, Safe-Way replaces the remaining sections on that door (limited to one door per household)
3 Years
  • Hinges, rollers, track, springs & similar hardware (all Safe-Way door models)

Coverage shown is for the standard build. Sub-tier and premium options may modify specific line items — ask Farnsworth for the exact terms on your configuration before purchase.

Per Safe-Way's Regency and Ambient brochures, the series warranty applies to Plank (and Bi-Directional) builds: Limited Lifetime section rust-through for the original single-family purchaser on the underlying sections, plus 3-year hardware coverage. Safe-Way's 10-Year Finish Warranty seal is footnoted "Warranty applies to both Bi-Directional and Plank," and the Warranty Information document adds a 10-year Madera section coverage against fading with a one-door-per-household color-match replacement provision. Ask us for the current warranty document for the exact language on your build.

Warranty terms change over time. Riley’s team can print the current version of your specific warranty for your files at install.

Installing Your Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain in Phoenix & the Phoenix Metro

Why Farnsworth is Your Local Safe-Way Installer

Farnsworth Garage Door Service is an active local Safe-Way dealer serving Mesa and the greater Phoenix area, and every install is handled by our in-house install team — not sub-contracted out. We carry Arizona ROC license #351810 and full commercial insurance, and our office answers the phone locally — no call-center runaround, no offshore booking system.

Because we install Safe-Way doors as our day job, our team knows the quirks of every collection — the wind-load spec new Queen Creek and Maricopa builds require, the right insulation tier for a west-facing Scottsdale garage (that’s where the Ambient Series’ R-17.68 polyurethane core earns its keep), and which Estate or Gentry window layout clears a low-headroom opening. When you buy a Safe-Way door from Farnsworth, you get a local installer who has installed the same collection dozens of times.

How the Install Works

  1. Free in-home consultation

A Farnsworth installer walks the opening with you, measures, talks through the colors and options, and hands you a written quote — no obligation, no pressure.

  2. Precise measurement

We measure the width, height, headroom, and side-room of your existing opening to spec the exact door build for your home — no surprises on install day.

  3. Removal & haul-away of your old door

On install day our team removes your old door, cleans up the driveway, and hauls the old sections away. It's always included in the written quote — never a separate line item.

  4. New Safe-Way door installation

Farnsworth's in-house install team sets your new Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain — track, torsion, panels, opener drawback, and safety-sensor alignment. No sub-contractors.

  5. Final tuning & walkthrough

Balance check, tension set, and a walkthrough of how your new door and opener work — remote, keypad, safety reverse, and manual release.

After the Install

Farnsworth doesn't disappear after install day. If something needs adjusting — a track alignment, a rattle, an opener travel-limit tweak — give us a call and we come back out. We offer courtesy tune-ups to keep the door running quietly, and we handle warranty service for both the Safe-Way door itself and the install workmanship. If a part needs replacing under warranty, we coordinate the claim with Safe-Way for you.

That's the "buy with confidence" side of buying from a local dealer instead of a national chain: one number to call for service, one team that knows your install, one relationship. Most of our Safe-Way installs turn into repeat customers — opener replacements, second-door installs, and the referrals that follow.

Farnsworth installs Safe-Way Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain across the Phoenix metro: Mesa (home base), Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Tempe, Phoenix, Fountain Hills, Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, San Tan Valley, Maricopa, and Guadalupe.

Common Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain Configurations

Most of the Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain installs we do across Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Tempe, and the wider Phoenix area fall into one of these two openings. Yours might be different — we measure at the free in-home consultation and quote the exact size for your home.

Most common

Two-car Plank Wood Grain install

Approx. 16' wide × 7' or 8' tall

The single 16-foot two-car door is the most common configuration on Phoenix-area homes. On a two-car Plank Wood Grain, we recommend an Ambient-based Plank build (models 286 or 275) with the polyurethane core and thermal break for any attached garage — the extra insulation makes a real difference on the wall the garage shares with your bedroom or living room. Plank woodgrain styling — clean flush or pencil-groove plank lines scales cleanly across the wider opening, and you can dial in the exact color and Estate Series window options including the modern Slim Line layout that matches your home.

Townhomes & side entries

One-car Plank Wood Grain install

Approx. 8' or 9' wide × 7' tall

Common on townhomes, casita conversions, and homes with a two-single-door layout instead of one wide door. For a one-car Plank Wood Grain, a Regency-based Plank build (flush model 266 or pencil-groove model 274) in Vintage, Cedar, Mahogany, or Charcoal is the practical default — enough performance for an attached garage without paying for the top-tier build on a smaller door. Same Plank woodgrain styling — clean flush or pencil-groove plank lines, same color palette, same warranty as the two-car version — just a narrower opening.

Replace, Upgrade, or New Construction

We install the Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain across three scenarios most homeowners in the Phoenix area come to us for — whether you're replacing a door that's finally given up, upgrading from a builder-grade panel, or specifying doors on new construction.

Replace

Replace an aging door with the Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain

Your existing door is 15-30 years old, the panels are dented or faded, the springs are cycling through their last thousand openings, and the annual repair calls are stacking up. We remove the old door, hardware, and tracks, install the new Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain with all-new hardware, re-set the torsion springs to the correct IPPT for the door weight, program your existing opener (or install a new one), and haul the old door away the same day. Free written quote on the front end, local Safe-Way dealer relationship on the back end.

Upgrade

Upgrade to the Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain

You're moving from a flat builder door on a modern or transitional elevation that calls for horizontal plank texture — the Plank Wood Grain is the modern-farmhouse and desert-contemporary favorite — high-resolution plank imaging digitally transferred to steel over a full Regency or Ambient insulated sandwich base. The Cedar and Walnut tones photograph like real wood from the street. Your upgrade path also includes the Ambient-based build (R-17.68 polyurethane) instead of the Regency-based build (R-10.25 polystyrene) — the tier we specify most often on attached Phoenix-area garages because the thermal payback shows up on every July and August electric bill.

New Construction

New construction Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain

Building a new custom home or handling a major renovation? Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain factory lead time is factory-order lead times vary by configuration — we confirm a real delivery date with your written quote, so we build the order timing into your construction schedule. Rough-opening walkthrough before drywall, coordinated install once the door opening is dried in, and we work directly with builders and owners across Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Tempe, and the wider Phoenix area.

How Much Does an Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain Cost, and What Determines the Price?

Every Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain we install in the Phoenix area is custom-configured to your specific home, so there isn't a single sticker price we can post that will actually match the door you end up with. What we can tell you is exactly what moves the number — six factors, in plain English, so you can walk into the conversation with your eyes open instead of guessing at online ranges from companies that have never seen your opening.

Rather than a generic range that won't match your home, we send a local Safe-Way dealer out to your driveway, measure your opening, walk you through the panel, insulation, color, window, and hardware choices, and hand you a written itemized quote. Free, no obligation, no pressure. Here are the six inputs we work through together.

The installed price on any Safe-Way Plank Wood Grain in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Tempe, and the wider Phoenix area depends on the six factors below. We walk each one with you in person and put the result in writing.

Size

Door size

Single-car, double-car, and oversized openings each carry their own material and hardware footprint — the single biggest driver of installed price.

Insulation

Insulation tier

Single-, double-, or triple-layer construction. Higher tiers cost more up front and pay back all summer in cooler garages across Mesa, Phoenix, and Chandler.

Windows

Window options

The number of windows, glass style, and upgrades like Frost, Dark Tint, obscure texture, or insulated glazing all shift the number on your quote.

Hardware

Decorative hardware

Optional handles, straps, and hinges dial up curb appeal — they're a la carte, so you only pay for the pieces you actually want on the door.

Wind Load

Wind-load reinforcement

Safe-Way's engineered wind-load builds (rated for 120, 130, and 140 mph design wind speeds) for Arizona monsoon straight-line winds, HOA standards, or homeowners insurance requirements add material to the build.

Included

Removal & haul-away

Farnsworth's written quote always includes removing your old door, cleaning up your driveway, and hauling the old sections away — not a separate line item.

HOA & architectural approval ready. Safe-Way's carriage-house designs are widely accepted in Arizona HOA communities — Silverleaf, DC Ranch, McDowell Mountain Ranch, Verde River, Val Vista Lakes, Power Ranch, Morrison Ranch, and more. Farnsworth handles your architectural review paperwork if your HOA requires it.

Downloads & Spec Sheets

Safe-Way's own brochures, warranty documents, and wind-load spec sheets — the same PDFs your builder or HOA will ask for. All hosted on our site so the links won't rot. Save whatever you need for your project file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Plank Wood Grain garage door cost installed?

Base build (Regency vs. Ambient), flush vs. pencil-groove layout, tone, windows, and size set the number. It prices far below real timber and slightly above a painted triple-layer door. We measure your opening and hand you a free written itemized quote with both bases priced.

What is the difference between the flush and pencil-groove Plank models?

Flush (models 266/286) is one continuous plank-imaged face — the most minimal look. Pencil groove (models 274/275) scores clean horizontal lines across the face so the individual "planks" read from further away. Both use the same four tones; the right pick depends on your viewing distance and elevation.

Which tones does the Plank door come in?

Vintage (weathered grey-brown), Cedar (warm mid), Mahogany (rich dark), and Charcoal (near-black modern). Cedar and Walnut-adjacent tones photograph most like real wood; Charcoal pairs beautifully with white stucco and black window frames.

Is the Plank Wood Grain door insulated?

Always — it only comes on full sandwich bases: Regency (polystyrene, R-10.25) or Ambient (injected polyurethane with a thermal break, R-17.68; available in 21" and 24" sections). For attached Phoenix-area garages we spec the Ambient base.

Does the Plank door work with modern windows?

Yes — the Slim Line layout (a narrow horizontal band of glass, typically in black frames) is available specifically for this aesthetic, alongside the broader Estate Series designs. Insulated glass is available across the options.

How durable is the plank finish in Arizona sun?

It's a factory imaging and finishing process on steel — engineered for UV exposure in a way no field-applied stain can match, with none of wood's cracking or greying. Maintenance is a rinse, not a refinishing schedule.

What warranty applies to a Plank Wood Grain door?

The underlying Regency or Ambient series warranty applies — Limited Lifetime section rust-through for the original single-family purchaser — plus 3-year hardware coverage. Safe-Way's brochures also carry a 10-Year Finish Warranty seal on the wood-look finish, footnoted as applying to Plank as well as Bi-Directional, and the warranty document adds a 10-year Madera section coverage against fading with a color-match replacement provision (one door per household). We include the current warranty language in your quote packet.
