Can You Open a Garage Door With a Broken Spring?

Almost nobody arrives at this question out of curiosity. There's a car behind the door, there's somewhere you need to be, and the spring picked last night to let go.

So let's answer it the way it's actually being asked. Physically, a door with a broken spring can be moved — it's steel on rollers in a track, and enough force will shift it. The question is what that costs, and the answer depends on which method you reach for. Some of the options cost you an opener. One of them can cost considerably more than that.

Below is each approach, what happens mechanically when you use it, and the one we'd actually recommend to somebody standing in their driveway at seven in the morning.

The one thing that turns this from expensive to dangerous

If the door is already partway up, or you manage to get it up, do not walk under it and do not leave it there. A raised door with no working counterbalance is held by whatever happens to be resisting gravity at that moment — the opener's drive train, a jammed roller, friction in the track — and none of those are load-bearing supports.

The failure mode isn't a slow sag. Whatever is holding it either holds or it doesn't, and when it stops the whole weight arrives at once with nothing between it and the floor.

Keep the opening clear. Get children and pets out of the garage entirely and shut the door between the garage and the house. The arithmetic nobody does before they try

A residential sectional door weighs roughly 130 to 350 pounds depending on width, material and insulation. With a healthy counterbalance you feel around ten pounds of that at the handle. Every bit of the rest is being carried by the spring.

So the change when a spring breaks isn't incremental. You go from a load a child could move to a load that sits at or above what most adults can safely lift and control — and unlike a barbell, this one is above shoulder height for most of the travel, it has to be held while somebody else does something, and it's attached to a track that will not forgive being loaded at an angle.

There's a second problem that gets less attention and matters more. Lifting the door is only half of it. Once it's up, something has to hold it up, and the entire holding system was the spring. There is no ledge, no detent, no latch, and nothing in a residential door design that catches it at the top. If you let go, the only question is what slows it down on the way back.

That's the real reason this page reads the way it does. It isn't the lift that hurts people. It's the moment after the lift, when someone reasonably assumes the hard part is over and steps into the opening.

Counterbalance The spring system that offsets the door's weight, so a heavy door behaves like a light one.
Force protection The opener's built-in limit on how hard it will push or pull before giving up. The reason it refuses rather than tries.

Short version: a broken spring doesn't make the door harder to open. It makes the door impossible to hold open, and those are different problems with different consequences.

Leaving it closed — the option people skip past

Basic check

Worth putting first precisely because it's the one that gets treated as the non-answer. A door resting on the concrete with a broken spring is completely stable. Nothing is under load, nothing is degrading, and the repair is no harder tomorrow than it is right now.

Everything else on this page carries a cost. This one carries none. The only reason it feels unacceptable is that it doesn't solve whatever is behind the door — which is a real problem, and which is better solved by the section further down than by moving the door.

How you can tell: The door is down, the spring shows a gap, and nothing is currently trapped that you can't live without for a few hours.

The fix
  1. Unplug the opener at the ceiling outlet, so nobody in the house presses the button on autopilot.
  2. Tell everyone at home what's happened and that the door is out of service. Teenagers and remotes are a specific combination worth mentioning.
  3. Photograph the spring with the flash on, whole shaft in frame, and have it ready when you call.
  4. Note whether there are one or two springs, and whether both cables look taut.
  5. Book the repair and mention anything trapped behind the door.
  6. Use a side door or the house for anything you need out of the garage in the meantime.

You’ll know it’s right when: The opener can't be operated by anyone, the household knows, and you have the information a technician needs before arriving.

Where to stop: Nothing risky in any of this. The only failure mode is leaving the opener plugged in and discovering later that somebody had a go. Leave it that way until the garage door spring repair is finished.

Using the opener anyway

High risk — call a technician

The first instinct, and the one with the clearest mechanical consequence.

The opener isn't rated to lift the door. It never was — its whole design assumes a balanced load and a small nudge. Ask it to lift a few hundred pounds and one of two things happens. Either force protection stops it, in which case you get a strain, a few inches of movement and a halt. Or the nylon drive gear inside the powerhead gives out, which is what it's there for, and now you have a spring repair and an opener repair on the same visit.

The number of attempts that takes is smaller than people expect. It isn't dozens.

Worth being specific about the two-spring case as well, because it's genuinely misleading: both torsion springs are mounted on the same shaft and share the load as one system. One breaking doesn't leave you at half strength in a useful way — the remaining spring is trying to counterbalance a door it was never sized to carry alone, and the opener is still being asked to make up an enormous difference.

How you can tell: Motor strains and the door barely moves, or the motor runs freely with nothing happening and a grinding noise from the powerhead.

Where to stop: Unplug it. And leave the force settings where they are — winding them up doesn't give the opener more lifting capacity in any meaningful sense, it just removes the margin that makes the door reverse when it meets something it shouldn't.

Lifting it by hand, on your own

High risk — call a technician

This is where the arithmetic from the primer becomes concrete. You're lifting the door's full weight from a crouch, and continuing to lift as it rises above your head and the leverage gets worse rather than better.

There's a hand-placement problem layered on top of the weight problem, and it deserves naming because it injures people on doors whose springs are perfectly healthy. Under strain, people grab the door wherever it offers a lip — which is almost always the joint between two sections. DASMA's guidance is unambiguous: the section-to-section joint is not a suitable gripping point, and gripping the door there could result in serious injury. That joint folds shut as the door travels, so it closes on whatever is inside it, and on an unbalanced door it closes with the door's whole weight behind it. Never put your fingers between the sections. A residential sectional door is meant to carry four handles or gripping points instead — two inside, two outside, within 8 inches of the bottom edge of the bottom section, on the second or third section, lined up vertically. That's where a hand belongs on any door. It just doesn't make this door liftable.

Assume for a moment the lift goes fine. You're now standing under a raised door holding all of it, and there is nothing to hand it off to. The moment your grip, your footing or your attention changes, the door comes down the way anything unsupported comes down.

We're not going to write a procedure for this, and it's worth being straightforward about why rather than gesturing at liability. There isn't a version of the instructions that ends well — the hazard isn't in the technique, it's in the fact that the door cannot be held at the top once it's there. Better technique doesn't address that. DASMA's own position on the underlying condition is the shorter version: if a spring is broken, don't operate the door until the spring has been replaced.

How you can tell: Not applicable. If you're evaluating whether you're strong enough, that's the wrong variable.

Where to stop: The specific thing to avoid is the partial success: getting the door up far enough to feel committed, then having to decide what to do about it while holding it. That's the scenario, and it's why the answer is upstream of the attempt.

Getting it partway and it stops there

High risk — call a technician

The worst position a broken-spring door ends up in, and it arrives from several directions: the opener stalled, someone lifted it and it jammed, or a roller bound in the track and is holding it by friction.

What's holding it up in that state is incidental. A cocked roller, a bind in the track, an opener trolley — none of these are supports. They're accidents of geometry, and they release without warning because there's no gradual mode of failure available to them.

The temptation is to nudge it, either up or down, on the reasonable theory that a stuck door needs unsticking. That nudge is exactly what releases whatever is holding it.

How you can tell: Door stopped at some height, won't move under power, and doesn't come down when you push on it.

Where to stop: Leave it alone entirely, clear the opening, unplug the opener, and keep everyone out of the garage. Say on the phone that the door is stuck partway with a broken spring, because it changes what we do when we arrive rather than just when we arrive.

Pulling the red cord on a raised door

High risk — call a technician

The emergency release is a good feature that solves a different problem. It disconnects the door from the opener's trolley so you can move the door by hand during a power outage, and the warning printed on the cord about using it with the door closed is not boilerplate.

Here's why it matters here. On a door with a working spring, the release changes nothing about what's holding the weight — the spring was doing that the whole time. On a door with a broken spring and the door raised, the opener's drive train has become the only thing standing between a few hundred pounds and the floor. The release exists specifically to remove the opener from the equation.

So the same action that's routine on a healthy door is the single worst move available on this one, and nothing about the cord tells you which situation you're in.

How you can tell: Door up, spring gapped, red cord hanging there looking like the obvious solution.

Where to stop: Leave the cord alone until the counterbalance is back in service. If the power is also out and that's how you got here, that's still the answer — a garage you can't get into overnight is recoverable in a way the alternative isn't.

Getting the car out without moving the door

Basic check

Since the vehicle is usually the real question, it deserves a real answer rather than a shrug.

Start with whether you need the car at all today. Rideshare and a colleague's carpool are unglamorous and they cost a fraction of a stripped drive gear. If the car genuinely has to come out, that's part of the service call — tell us when you book, because it changes the order we do things in and it means the door gets controlled properly rather than improvised around.

What we'd ask you not to do is arrange your own version of it: someone holding the door while someone else reverses out from under it. That's two people committed to a load that can't be handed off, plus a moving vehicle, plus time pressure. It's the specific combination behind most of the stories we hear.

How you can tell: You need the car and the door is the only obstacle.

The fix
  1. Say it explicitly when you call — “there's a car behind it” changes how the job gets scheduled.
  2. Check for a side service door and get anything portable out that way first.
  3. Arrange a fallback for the morning in case the timing doesn't line up. It's the cheapest insurance available here.
  4. Keep the garage clear in the meantime so there's room to work when we get there.
  5. Don't recruit a neighbor to hold the door while you back out. That's the version we'd most like to talk people out of.
  6. Leave the opener unplugged so nobody tries the shortcut while you're inside making coffee.

You’ll know it’s right when: The car situation is on the work order, the household has a plan B, and nobody is improvising a lift.

The extension-spring exception, and why it's a trap

High risk — call a technician

Doors with extension springs — the long ones running back alongside the horizontal tracks — behave differently here, and it's worth naming because the difference actively misleads people.

Extension springs pull independently on each side. If one fails, the other is still doing its share, so the door retains partial counterbalance. It feels heavy and lopsided rather than immovable, and it can often be moved. That's the trap: a door that can be moved gets moved.

What's actually happening is that the door is now being lifted unevenly, with one side supported and one side not. That racks the door in the opening, loads the rollers sideways, and is a direct route to a cable coming off a drum or the door leaving its track. And the failed spring, if there's no containment cable through it, is loose hardware near head height.

How you can tell: Springs alongside the tracks rather than a shaft above the opening, with one visibly slack or broken, and a door that lifts unevenly.

Where to stop: The fact that it moves isn't permission. Uneven lifting is how a spring problem becomes a track problem, and a track problem is a longer job than the one you started with.

Things not to do — and why

× Don't have two people lift it together

Splitting the weight doesn't solve the actual problem, which is that there's nothing to hold the door once it's up. It just puts a second person under it. The number of people in the opening is the wrong thing to be optimizing.

× Don't prop a raised door with anything you own

Ladders, jack stands, lumber and floor jacks are all rated for loads that behave predictably. A garage door on improvised support shifts, slides and finds the weak point, and when it does there's no partial version of the failure.

× Don't reverse a car out from under a held door

It combines a load that can't be set down, a driver whose attention is behind them, and a helper whose grip is finite. Getting a trapped vehicle out is part of the service call for exactly this reason.

× Don't hook your fingers into the gap between two sections

It's the handhold the door seems to offer and the one DASMA warns about by name — homeowners injure their fingers every year pulling down on a door that way. The joint closes as the door moves, and on a door with no counterbalance it closes hard. If you're touching the door at all, touch a handle or gripping point.

× Don't clamp the track with vise grips and call it secure

A clamp holds a roller, not a door. It transfers a few hundred pounds into a thin steel track at one point, which is a good way to bend the track and end up with two repairs.

× Don't let anyone walk under a raised or partly raised door

This is the one that matters more than all the equipment advice. Whatever is currently holding the door isn't a support, and the space underneath is the only place the weight is going.

× Don't try again because it nearly worked

Nearly working is the failure mode, not a promising sign. A door that moved a few inches and stopped told you the load exceeded what's available, and the second attempt applies the same load to parts that have already taken it once.

× Don't leave the door raised while you go to work

An unsupported door standing open all day in an empty house is a hazard with nobody watching it, on top of leaving the garage wide open. If it's up, that's a reason to call sooner rather than a reason to relax.

Why the pressure to try it is higher here

The mechanics don't care where you live. The temptation does, and there are a few things about how Valley homes are laid out that raise it.

In most Mesa, Chandler and Queen Creek subdivisions built in the last thirty years, the garage isn't where the car is kept — it's the door the household actually uses.
