Garage Door Is Stuck and Won't Move at All

There's a specific kind of stuck this page is about. Not a door that opens slowly or grumbles halfway. A door that has decided it is a wall — the remote does nothing useful, the wall button does nothing useful, and when you pull the release cord and try it by hand, it doesn't budge either.

Immobile is actually a narrow diagnosis. A door that won't move has either lost the ability to move (something mechanical is holding it) or lost the ability to be moved (the weight is no longer counterbalanced and what you're pulling against is a couple of hundred pounds). Those two feel identical at the handle and they lead to completely different places.

The good news buried in here: one of the most common answers on this page is a lock somebody threw and forgot about.

This is general guidance based on what we see on service calls — it isn’t a substitute for someone looking at your actual door. Every door is a little different, and if anything here feels beyond what you want to take on, stop and give us a call.

The one thing not to do

Don't apply more force. Not a longer lever, not a second person, not a strap on a bumper. If a door hasn't moved for the effort you've already put in, more effort is not the missing ingredient.

Whatever is holding the door is holding it for a reason, and every one of those reasons is something that fails suddenly rather than gradually. A jammed roller that finally releases, a lock bar that shears, a cable that lets go under a load it was never meant to carry — all of them turn a stationary door into a moving one at the moment you're closest to it.

Unplug the opener so nothing can try again on a timer or from an app. If the door is stuck partway up, get vehicles and people out from under it and keep them out. What to check in the next 10 minutes

Four checks that take a couple of minutes and put you on the right branch. None of them involve pulling on the door.

  1. 1
    Find out whether the opener is even involved

    Does the powerhead make any sound at all when you press the button — a hum, a click, a motor running? A motor that runs while the door stays still is a completely different fault from a motor that does nothing. If the motor runs and nothing happens, that's the opener's side of the problem and it has its own page.

    You’ll know it worked when: You can say whether the opener is silent, clicking, or running without result.

    Check both slide locks

    Look along the inside of the door, roughly level with the bottom of the second section, at each side. A slide lock is a bar that runs out into a slot in the vertical track. Look at both — a lock engaged on one side only is more common than both, and it produces exactly this symptom. Some doors also have a rope-pulled center lock.

    You’ll know it worked when: You've physically looked at both sides rather than assumed nobody used them.

    Look at the spring above the opening

    A broken torsion spring shows a clear gap in the coil, as though someone removed a section. Extension springs run alongside the horizontal tracks and either hang slack or show an obvious break. This is the check that decides whether the door is stuck or merely very heavy.

    You’ll know it worked when: You've looked at the counterbalance and can say whether it's intact.

    Walk the tracks and the perimeter of the door

    Look for a roller sitting outside its channel, a hinge that has come apart, a dent in the vertical track, an object wedged between the door and the jamb, and anything sitting on the floor in the door's path. Also look at the bottom edge where the rubber seal meets the concrete.

    You’ll know it worked when: You've inspected both tracks top to bottom and both sides of the opening.

Is it held, or is it heavy?

Everything on this page divides along this line, and the two feel almost the same when you're pulling on a handle.

With the opener disconnected, does the door feel like it's caught on something — solid, immovable, no give at all — or does it feel heavy but loaded, like it would move if you were stronger?
Solid. It's caught. There's no give in any direction
What that means: Something is mechanically restraining it. A lock, a jammed roller, a bent track pinching, a hinge that has failed and is fouling, or an object between door and jamb. The door's weight isn't the issue at all.
Where to go next: Causes 1, 3, 4 and 5.
Heavy. It has some give but it's enormously heavy
What that means: The counterbalance isn't carrying the door. You're feeling most of its actual weight, which for a residential sectional is somewhere between 130 and 350 pounds. Nothing is jammed — the door is simply unsupported.
Where to go next: Cause 2, and stop pulling.
It gives an inch or two and then stops hard
What that means: Usually a bottom seal that has bonded to the concrete, or a roller that's out and hitting the track lip a short distance into its travel. Both are worth identifying before any more force goes in.
Where to go next: Causes 5 and 4.
I'd rather not test it by hand
What that means: Entirely reasonable, particularly on a door that's stuck partway up. Nothing on this page requires you to pull on it — the spring, the locks and the tracks all tell their story visually.

The reason this fork matters: a held door and a heavy door want opposite responses. A held door needs the restraint found and removed. A heavy door needs everyone to stop touching it until the counterbalance is restored.

Why an immobile door is a short list

It helps to know how little is actually required for a door to move. The sections ride on rollers in two channels. The weight is carried by a wound spring through two cables. And the opener contributes a small push at the top. That's all of it.

Which means only a few things can stop it dead. A positive restraint — a lock bar sitting in a track slot, a bolt, a padlock through a track hole — physically prevents travel and nothing else needs to be wrong. A mechanical interference — a roller out of its channel, a deformed track pinching, a broken hinge fouling a section edge, a foreign object wedged in — jams the assembly. Or the counterbalance stops carrying the weight, in which case nothing is stopping the door but nothing is helping it either.

That last case is the one people misread. A door with a failed spring isn't jammed. It's free to move in every sense, it just weighs what a garage door actually weighs, and a healthy door hides that from you completely. A balanced door feels like roughly ten pounds at the handle and holds position wherever you leave it. When that disappears, the difference is not subtle.

There's one more possibility worth naming and setting aside: the opener's own drive train. If the motor runs and the door doesn't move, the door isn't stuck — the connection between them has failed. That belongs to the opener hub rather than here.

Slide lock A manual bar on the inside of the door that slides into a slot in the vertical track. Fully capable of stopping a powered door dead.
Positive restraint Anything physically blocking travel. Distinguished from a bind by being deliberate and reversible.
Counterbalance The spring system carrying the door's weight. When it fails, the door isn't stuck — it's just unsupported.
Interference Two parts occupying the same space — a roller against a deformed lip, a hinge against a section edge. Force makes interference worse, not better.

Read it this way: if the door feels solid, look for what's holding it. If the door feels heavy, look at the spring. The two answers don't overlap.

What’s actually causing it

These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.

A manual lock is engaged

High risk — call a technician

We lead with this one because it's the least expensive answer on the page and the one people rule out last.

Most sectional doors still have their original hardware: a slide bolt at one or both sides, roughly at the height of the second section, that runs out into a slot in the vertical track. Some have a center lock operated by a rope handle. They were designed for doors that got opened by hand, and on a door with an opener they mostly sit unused for years — until somebody throws one before a trip, or a child works out what the handle does, or the bolt drifts out on its own because the spring detent is worn.

The result is a door that will not move by any means. And it's worse than just immobile: an opener that tries to lift a locked door puts its full force into a fixed object, which is a well-established way to strip the nylon drive gear and turn a two-second fix into a two-part repair.

How you can tell: A bolt visibly sitting in the track slot, or a lock handle turned to the horizontal position. Often accompanied by an opener that strained hard before it gave up.

Where to stop: Retracting a lock bar is not the risky part. What we'd want looked at is what happened while the opener was fighting it — the drive gear, the top section where the opener arm attaches, and the track slot itself, which can deform around a bolt that's been loaded. If the opener strained repeatedly, mention that when you call.

The counterbalance has failed — the door isn't stuck, it's unsupported

High risk — call a technician

This is the version where nothing is holding the door and that's precisely the problem.

A torsion spring stores almost exactly the door's weight. Break it and that stored energy is gone in an instant, usually with a bang loud enough that people go out to see what fell over. From that moment the door weighs what it actually weighs — a residential sectional runs between roughly 130 and 350 pounds depending on size, material and insulation — and a homeowner pulling on the handle is trying to deadlift most of that from an awkward stance.

The opener can't do it either. It's rated for the nudge, not the load. So a household experiences this as a door that suddenly “won't move,” and reaches for the release cord, which is the specific action that makes it dangerous: with the trolley disengaged and the spring gone, nothing is holding a raised door up.

How you can tell: A clear gap in the spring coil above the opening. A bang the night before. An opener that strains and quits. The door feels heavy rather than caught — there's give, there's just far too much weight behind it.

Where to stop: Leave it exactly where it is. If it's down, keep it down. If it's up, don't pull the release to bring it down — that removes the only thing currently holding it. This is the one condition on the door hub we'd call urgent regardless of what time it is. Call it in as it stands and let the off-track garage door repair begin with the door where it stopped.

A roller is out of its channel and the door is wedged

High risk — call a technician

When a roller leaves its track, it doesn't leave cleanly. It lodges — against the lip it climbed over, against a bracket, against the section beside it — and the whole door stops.

What makes this different from a lock or a heavy door is that the assembly is now under load in a direction it was never designed for. The sections are pushing against each other. The remaining rollers are being asked to hold a door that's no longer square. The cables may be taut on one side and slack on the other. It feels absolutely solid, and it is solid, right up until the moment the wedged part slips.

The off-track situation has its own page covering what happens and why it can't be re-railed by hand. The reason it belongs on this list is that most people don't experience it as “my door came off track” — they experience it as “my door is stuck,” and they go looking for something to pull on.

How you can tell: A roller visibly sitting outside its channel, the door at an angle in the opening, or a hard stop at one specific point in travel with a scraping sound just before it.

Where to stop: Nothing here improves with force, and the door is currently in the state where it's least predictable. Clear the area, unplug the opener, and leave it. If a vehicle is under a partly open door, leave the vehicle there too — it may be carrying load.

The track is deformed, or a hinge has failed

High risk — call a technician

Interference faults. Two parts trying to be in the same place, and the door can't get past.

The track version: residential track is light-gauge steel, shaped rather than thick. A bumper tap, a ladder falling against it, or a bracket over-tightened onto the channel can narrow it by an eighth of an inch, and an eighth of an inch is enough to stop a roller dead. This produces a door that runs fine everywhere except one specific height, where it stops solid every single time.

The hinge version: hinges hold section ends together and carry the roller stems. When one cracks — usually around the sleeve the stem sits in — that section end stops being properly located. It drops, tilts, and fouls the section below it. The door will often still move a few inches before the fouling parts meet.

Both share a signature: absolutely repeatable. Same place, every time, with no variation.

How you can tell: A hard stop at exactly the same point in travel, often with a visible mark on the track or a hinge that looks bent, cracked or has fasteners backing out.

Where to stop: Bending a track back into shape by hand doesn't restore its internal profile — the channel has a different cross-section than it did, and a roller will find that spot again. As for hinges, the ones at the section ends carry roller stems and, at the bottom, cable tension, which puts them in a different category from the center hinges.

The bottom seal has bonded to the concrete

High risk — call a technician

A genuinely Arizona-flavored version of stuck, and one people rarely guess.

The rubber seal along the bottom of the door sits compressed against a slab that spends June through September at temperatures that would be uncomfortable to stand on barefoot. Rubber that hot softens. A door left closed for a couple of weeks — a vacation, a second home, a rarely-used third bay — can have its seal effectively grip the concrete.

The opener then tries to lift a door that's adhered along its full width. Sometimes it wins and tears the seal out of its retainer. Sometimes it strains, decides it's met an obstruction, and stops. And sometimes it strips its own drive gear trying. All three arrive as “the door won't open.”

The related version is debris: monsoon silt packed into the bottom of the vertical channels sets almost like grout after it gets rained on and dried. A roller trying to start from that position has real work to do.

How you can tell: The door has been closed for a while, it's summer, and the resistance is right at the very start of travel. Often there's a tearing sound if it does break free, or a visible line where the seal has pulled.

Where to stop: The temptation is to have somebody lift the bottom edge while the opener pulls. Don't — that's a person's hands at the exact point where the door will suddenly move. Beyond that, an opener that has been repeatedly straining against a stuck door has usually taken damage even if the door eventually opened, and that's worth checking before it fails on its own.

The opener has failed, and the door is fine

High risk — call a technician

Worth including because it's the version where nothing at all is wrong with the door — and because it's diagnosable in about ten seconds.

If the motor runs its full travel and the door never moves, the door is not stuck. The connection between opener and door has failed. Nearly always that's one of two things: the trolley is disengaged because somebody pulled the release cord and never re-latched it, or the nylon drive gear inside the powerhead has stripped its teeth. The drive gear is deliberately the sacrificial part — it's designed to be what fails when the opener is asked to do something it shouldn't, which is usually lifting a door that got heavy or fighting a lock.

If the motor hums or clicks and doesn't turn, that's a different opener fault again — a start capacitor, or a motor being asked to start a load it can't overcome.

How you can tell: The opener runs normally, the light comes on, the rail sounds busy, and the door sits completely still. Or the opener makes a single click, or a hum, and nothing more.

Where to stop: The important part is not to keep triggering it. If a stripped gear is chewing what's left of its teeth, or a motor is stalling repeatedly against a load, each attempt makes the eventual repair larger. What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself

  • A flashlight — the lock bars, the spring gap and the roller channels are all things you're trying to see rather than reach
  • A stepladder — for looking, not for leverage — the spring and the drums sit above the opening and can't be assessed from the floor
  • Your phone camera — photograph the spring, both locks and any roller that's out of place. It tells us what's coming before we load the truck

Things not to do — and why

× Don't add leverage — no pry bar, no strap, no second person heaving

A door that hasn't moved is being held by something that will let go all at once rather than gradually. More force just decides when that happens and puts you nearer to it.

× Don't keep pressing the button to try again

Every attempt drives the opener's force into whatever is holding the door. That's how a locked door becomes a locked door plus a stripped drive gear, which is two repairs instead of none.

× Don't pull the release cord on a stuck door that's partway up

The release transfers the door to the springs and cables. On a door that's jammed because that system has already failed, you'd be handing the weight to the thing that dropped it.

× Don't put your hands under the bottom edge to help it start

The bottom edge is exactly where a stuck door becomes an unstuck door, and it does that without notice. Whatever the cause, hands don't belong in the gap.

× Don't hammer or pry at a dented track to free the roller

The channel profile doesn't come back. You end up with a permanent low spot that the roller finds again, and often a door that comes off track at that exact height later.

× Don't cut or lever out a bonded bottom seal while the door is loaded

The door releases the moment the bond breaks. That's a sudden movement of a heavy panel with somebody's hands at the pinch point.

× Don't move the vehicle out from under a door stuck partway

If the door has settled onto anything, that thing is currently taking load. Removing it isn't freeing the car, it's dropping the door.

× Don't assume the opener is the problem because the opener is what you're pressing

The single most useful thing you can establish is whether the door moves by hand. That one test splits this page down the middle, and it costs nothing.

× Don't take hold of the joint between two sections to work the door

On a door that's resisting, that's exactly where hands end up, and it's the worst spot available. DASMA states it flatly: the section-to-section joint is not a suitable gripping point, and gripping there could result in serious injury. A stuck door doesn't ease free, it lets go — and when it moves, the joint closes on whatever is in it. The handles are on the face of the second or third section.

The local versions of this

Some of the causes above are universal. Two of them are noticeably more common in Phoenix-area garages than they would be elsewhere, and both come down to what heat does to rubber and what dust does to moving parts.

The seal-bonded-to-slab version is one we see specifically at second homes and rental properties around Scottsdale and Gold Canyon, where a door can sit closed through the hottest months and then be asked to open in September.

  • Hot slabs grip soft rubber — a bottom seal compressed against concrete at summer temperatures can adhere, and a door left closed for weeks is the one that does it.
  • Monsoon silt sets in the channel bottoms — fine dust washed in and dried packs the base of the vertical track, right where a roller has to start from.
  • Heat shortens spring life — our own call history says springs retire early in this valley, and DASMA adds a specific reason: a door left standing open exposes its springs to far more temperature and moisture swing than a closed one, and a counterbalance failure is the version of “stuck” that matters most.
  • Snowbird doors sit unused — a door that cycles twice in six months develops problems nobody is present to notice, and then meets them all at once on the first attempt.
  • August delays it — nobody wants to stand in a garage in August troubleshooting a door, so a binding door gets one more shove and then a stuck door gets a service call.

Not getting to immovable

Almost every version of this gave notice first. These are the ways to hear it.

  • Retire the slide locks if the door has an opener — either remove them or tape them permanently open. A manual lock and a powered door are a bad combination and this is the cheapest cause on the page to eliminate.
  • Cycle a rarely-used door every few weeks in summer — that's what stops a hot seal from bonding to the slab, and it applies to third bays and vacation homes especially.
  • Sweep the bottom of both vertical channels after dust events so silt doesn't pack in where the rollers start.
  • Act on a bind at one specific height immediately — a repeatable catch means something has physically changed shape, and that only gets worse.
  • Test the balance twice a year with the opener disconnected — a door that has started getting heavy is a door heading for the counterbalance version of this.
  • Stop pressing the button after the second failed attempt — the drive gear is sacrificial by design and repeated attempts are what sacrifice it.
  • Look at the spring coil occasionally — once you know a break shows as a visible gap, checking takes five seconds and answers the most important question on this page.

How doors usually arrive at immobile

Stuck is rarely the first symptom. It's the point where a progression stops being usable, and each step here causes the next.

The counterbalance route arrives at the same place by a different road: spring breaks, door becomes too heavy to lift, and immobile is where it ends up. Either way, the step before this one was cheaper.

How we approach a door that won't move

The first job is establishing what's carrying the weight, because that determines whether anything can safely be freed at all.

What we do on a visit for this
  • Establish whether the counterbalance is intact before applying any force to the door
  • Secure the door in its current position so nothing shifts while it's being assessed
  • Check and release any manual lock, and check the track slot for deformation where a bolt has been loaded
  • Identify the point of restraint — roller, hinge, track, seal or object — rather than working the door to find it
  • Free the door under controlled load with the assembly supported
  • Inspect the opener's drive gear, rail and header bracket for damage from repeated attempts
  • Check the top section and opener arm attachment, which take the strain when a door is fought
  • Verify both cables, both drums and the spring condition before the door is cycled again
  • Re-establish track alignment and roller condition across the door
  • Run it under power and re-run the safety reversal test the way UL 325 requires

What determines the bill here

This symptom has the widest spread on the hub, because it covers a lock somebody forgot and a counterbalance that has failed.

  • Which of the causes it turns out to be A lock release with a hardware check is at one end of the range and a spring replacement with cable work is at the other. The diagnosis is most of the answer.
  • How many times the opener was asked to try The nylon drive gear is designed to fail before the motor does. Repeated attempts against a fixed door are the standard way it gets there.
  • Whether the door has to be freed under load A jammed door that needs supporting and releasing takes time and equipment that a simple lock release doesn't.
  • Track and hinge damage A deformed channel section gets replaced rather than reshaped, and hinges that fouled usually need replacing along with the rollers they carry.
  • Condition of the top section When a door is fought hard, the opener arm's attachment point takes it. A pulled or creased top section is a bigger conversation.
  • Whether the bottom seal survived A seal torn out of its retainer is an inexpensive part, but the retainer itself sometimes goes with it.
