Garage Door Squeaks and Squeals
Squealing is the friendliest noise a garage door makes. It's high, it's irritating, and it almost always means the same simple thing: two surfaces that should have a film between them don't.
That's worth appreciating, because a squeal is a warning issued years ahead of the damage. A hinge pin turning dry in its sleeve complains for a long time before it wears the sleeve oval. A roller stem does the same. The door is telling you about a problem while it's still free to fix.
What this page does is help you find which part is squealing, which is the part most people skip. There are eight candidates and they're not all solved the same way — two of them aren't a lubrication question at all, and one of them means the part is finished rather than dry. Then there's the more interesting case: a door that squeals again a month after being properly lubricated, which in this climate is usually not a fault at all.

1Confirm it's actually a squeal
High pitched, fairly clean, and it gets worse the slower the door moves. That's a squeal. If it's low, rough and gritty, that's a grind — different cause entirely, different urgency, and lubricant is the wrong response to it. If it's a series of small impacts rather than a continuous tone, that's a rattle.

2Move the door by hand, very slowly
Door closed, opener unplugged, release cord pulled. Then raise the door in six-inch increments, pausing between them. Squeals are speed-sensitive and they show up dramatically at slow speed, which lets you get your ear near the part making it rather than guessing from ten feet away.

3Decide whether it's door or opener
If the squeal disappears entirely with the opener disconnected, it belongs to the rail, the trolley or the motor, and none of the door hardware needs touching. That's a genuinely different problem with its own page on the opener hub.

4Note whether it's rubber or metal
A rubbery squeal has a softer, more organic quality — think a wet finger on glass rather than a hinge. That's the bottom seal on the concrete or the side stop moulding dragging on the door face, and no amount of lubricating hinges will change it.

A squeal is stick-slip. Two surfaces in contact grab, release, grab again, and do it thousands of times a second — which your ear hears as a tone. The pitch depends on the surfaces and the load, which is why a hinge and a spring squeal at recognizably different frequencies once you've heard both.
There are only a handful of places on a door where two surfaces slide against each other under load. A hinge pin turns inside its sleeve every time the door articulates through the curve. A roller stem turns inside the hinge sleeve that holds it, and the roller's own bearing lets the wheel turn on the stem. The shaft turns inside two or three bearings above the opening. And the coils of a torsion spring move against each other as the spring winds and unwinds — that one surprises people, because a spring doesn't look like it has moving parts.
Then there are two rubber contacts that squeal for a completely different reason. The bottom seal deforms against the concrete as the door seats, and the stop moulding down each side of the opening rubs the door's face for its whole travel. Both are supposed to touch. Both make noise when they harden and stop deforming easily, which around here happens years before they look worn out.
The distinction that matters: metal contacts squeal because they're dry, and lubricant fixes them. Rubber contacts squeal because they've hardened, and lubricant doesn't. Putting grease on a stop moulding gets you a squeaky door with a greasy stripe down it.

Locating the squeal

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
Dry hinge pins
Basic checkThe most common answer, and the one to check first because it's also the easiest to confirm.
Every joint between sections carries a row of hinges, and each hinge has a pin turning inside a rolled steel sleeve. That pin does real work — it rotates through a meaningful angle every time the section bends over the curve, under the weight of everything above it.
The giveaway is timing. A hinge squeal isn't constant through the travel. It rises as a section approaches the curve, peaks as it articulates, and quiets once that section is running flat along the horizontal track. If you watch while listening, you'll see the squeal move up the door as each section takes its turn.
Around here this is a summer complaint more than a winter one, and the reason isn't wear. Lubricant in a garage that reaches attic-adjacent temperatures thins and migrates off a vertical pin surface over a season. The hinge isn't worn — it's just not carrying anything any more.
How you can tell: The squeal moves along the door as it opens, timed to sections turning the corner. Touching a hinge pin with a fingertip afterwards shows dry, clean steel rather than any film.
- Close the door, unplug the opener at the ceiling, and pull the release cord.
- Raise the door slowly by hand in stages, pausing at each. Listen for which hinge row is talking.
- Confirm by touch with the door closed — a pin that should be lubricated and isn't feels dry and looks bright.

- Cycle the door several times to work it in, then listen again at slow speed.

Roller bearings and stems running dry
Basic checkThe second candidate, and it sounds different in a way that's useful.
A roller has two friction surfaces. The bearing lets the wheel spin on the stem, and the stem turns inside the hinge sleeve that holds it. Both can go dry, and the resulting squeal is more or less constant through the travel rather than timed to the curve — because unlike a hinge, a roller is working the entire time the door is moving.
Steel rollers with open, unsealed bearings are the usual offenders, and they're what most builders install. Sealed nylon rollers stay quiet far longer, partly because the seal keeps lubricant in and partly because it keeps our fine local dust out.
There's a detail worth knowing before anyone starts spraying: the wheel tread doesn't get lubricant. The wheel is supposed to grip and roll on the channel. A greased tread skids, which is both louder and worse for the track. It's the bearing and the stem that want it, not the running surface.
How you can tell: A steady squeal through the whole travel in both directions, not tied to sections turning the corner. Often a couple of rollers are worse than the rest.
- With the door closed and the opener unplugged, spin each accessible wheel with a finger. A healthy one turns freely and quietly.
- Wiggle each wheel side to side. Play in the stem means wear rather than dryness, which changes the answer.
- Note which rollers are noisy — usually not all of them, and knowing which ones matters.
- Lubricate the bearing races and the stems, not the wheel treads, following the lubrication page for product and method.
- Cycle several times and re-listen. Rollers usually respond immediately if dryness was the issue.
- Leave the two rollers at the bottom corners alone. Those sit in the bottom brackets, which anchor the lift cables under full spring tension.
- If the noisy rollers are steel and due for replacement anyway, sealed nylon is the upgrade that actually changes how the door sounds.
You’ll know it’s right when: Every accessible wheel spins freely and quietly, and the constant squeal has gone.
The torsion spring coils rubbing
Hands-on — moderate riskThe one that surprises people, because a spring doesn't look like it has moving parts.
It does. As a torsion spring winds and unwinds, its coils move relative to each other — closing up slightly under load and opening as it releases. Steel sliding on steel, under substantial force. When the light coating of lubricant on a spring dries out or gets stripped, that contact starts to squeal, and it does it from the header directly above the door.
The signature is timing: loudest right at the start of the lift, when the spring is doing its hardest work, and often present again at the end of the close. It's a bigger, deeper squeal than a hinge — more of a groan.
It's genuinely a maintenance item rather than a fault. A properly lubricated spring is quieter and, more usefully, a lubricated spring has less friction between its coils, which is one small factor in how long it lasts. What it isn't is an invitation to touch anything else on that shaft.
How you can tell: A deep squeal or groan from directly above the door, worst as the door starts to rise. Looking up, the spring's surface appears dry and uniformly dull rather than lightly coated.
- Establish that the noise really is at the header and really is the spring rather than a bearing — a bearing squeal is more localized to one end.
- Look at the spring's surface with a flashlight. A dry spring looks flat and chalky. Also look for a gap in the coil, because that's a different conversation entirely.
- Lubricate the spring per the lubrication page — the method matters here, and that page covers it, including how much is too much.
- Never wind, unwind, or adjust anything on the shaft. Lubricating the outside of a spring and adjusting a spring are completely different activities.
- Cycle the door a few times and listen again from directly beneath the header.
- If the squeal is at one end of the shaft rather than across the spring's length, that's a bearing and it belongs to the next cause.
You’ll know it’s right when: The header squeal is gone and the spring's surface carries a light film rather than looking chalky.
A shaft bearing going dry or failing
Hands-on — moderate riskThe shaft above the door turns in bearings: one in a plate at each end, and on longer doors one more in a center bracket. They carry the whole rotating assembly, and they're often the least-considered parts on the door.
A dry bearing squeals from a single spot, which is the diagnostic. Unlike the spring, which produces noise across the width of the header, a bearing complains from one end or from the middle. Put your ear at each end in turn and it's usually obvious.
What makes this one worth escalating rather than just lubricating: a bearing that has started to squeal is often past dry and into worn. As the race wears, the shaft develops play, and a shaft with play doesn't hold the drums in a consistent position — which is how a bearing problem quietly becomes a cable spooling problem.
The other tell is progression. A dry bearing squeals. A failing one starts to add a rough, gritty edge to the squeal, and at that point it's turning into a grind.
How you can tell: Squeal from one specific point on the header rather than across the width. Sometimes visible play if the shaft can be gently rocked, though that's a check to leave to us.
- Isolate which end it's coming from by listening at each bearing plate in turn while somebody cycles the door.
- Look at the bearing plate for the obvious — a mounting bolt backed out, a plate that has shifted on the wall.
- A light lubrication of the bearing per the lubrication page is reasonable and often quietens a genuinely dry one.
- Listen again after a few cycles. A dry bearing goes quiet. A worn one doesn't, or comes back within days.
- Note if the sound has any roughness in it — that's the signal it's wearing rather than dry.
- Don't attempt to remove, replace or shim a bearing plate. Those bolt to the wall and hold the shaft the entire counterbalance turns on.

The bottom seal squeaking on the concrete
Basic checkA rubbery squeak that only happens in the final few inches of closing, and it catches people out because they're looking for something metallic.
The bottom seal — the rubber strip in a retainer along the door's bottom edge — is designed to deform against the slab and take up the last of the gap. Deforming is normal and quiet. What isn't quiet is a seal that has hardened: it no longer compresses smoothly, so instead it grabs and slips against the concrete on the way down.
This is a distinctly local failure. In this climate seals harden rather than tear. Heat and UV through the gap stiffen the rubber over a few years while it still looks entirely intact, which is why homeowners rule it out by looking at it. Press it with a thumb: healthy rubber springs back, spent rubber feels like plastic.
The other version happens on hot afternoons, when a softened seal drags across concrete that's been baking all day and makes a sound closer to a chirp.
How you can tell: The noise only exists at the very bottom of the travel, has a rubbery rather than metallic quality, and the seal feels stiff to a thumb.
- With the door closed, look at the seal along the full width from outside. Hardening is uniform, so it won't look damaged.
- Press it in several places. Pliable is healthy. Unyielding means it has done its time.
- Check whether it has slipped out of its retainer at either end, which produces a different noise and a bigger gap.
- Sweep the concrete under the door. Grit trapped between rubber and slab makes a very similar squeak and costs nothing to rule out.
- A replacement seal slides into the retainer channel and is one of the more approachable jobs on a door.
- Silicone is the right family of product for anything rubber, but don't rely on lubricant as the fix — a hardened seal needs replacing rather than dressing.
You’ll know it’s right when: The seal is pliable, seated along its full width, and compresses quietly against the concrete.
The stop moulding rubbing the door face
Basic checkThe other rubber squeak, and the one most often misdiagnosed as a track problem.
Down each side of the opening runs a strip of moulding with a vinyl or rubber flap that seals against the face of the door. Contact is intentional — that's how the opening stays sealed — but it's meant to be light contact. When the rubber hardens, or when the moulding has been nailed a fraction too close, it presses instead of touching, and the door face drags against it for the entire travel.
The sound is soft, continuous and unmistakably rubbery once you know what you're listening for. And it runs the full length of the travel rather than being tied to any particular height, which is what separates it from a track issue.
Look for a polished stripe on the door's face where the seal contacts it. That's the confirmation, and it's usually visible from a few feet away in the right light.
How you can tell: Soft continuous squeaking from the sides of the opening, no metallic edge, plus a scuffed or polished vertical line on the door's face.
- With the door closed, look at the moulding down both sides. The flap should be touching the door, not visibly compressed against it.
- Press the rubber with a thumb — stiff and unyielding means it has hardened, which is the normal failure mode here.
- Check whether the moulding itself sits too close. A strip nailed a fraction proud presses harder than it should for the whole travel.
- Look for the scuff line on the door face to confirm where contact is happening.
- A light silicone treatment on the rubber sometimes quietens a moulding that's serviceable but stiff. It's a stopgap rather than a fix.
- Replacement stop moulding comes in single lengths per side and is genuinely straightforward.
- Check the header seal along the top of the opening while you're at it — it hardens on the same schedule and drags on the top section.
You’ll know it’s right when: The seal contacts the door lightly, the squeak has gone, and the door face has no new scuff line forming.
The squeal belongs to the opener
Basic checkIncluded because the by-hand test resolves it in a minute and it saves people from lubricating a door that was never the problem.
Openers squeal for their own reasons. A trolley sliding along a dry rail. A chain running over a worn sprocket. A screw-drive opener whose rail lubricant has thinned out — and screw drives are noticeably affected by heat, which makes this a local pattern rather than a universal one. A motor bearing on its way out has a higher, more constant whine that doesn't change with the door's position.
None of these respond to anything done to hinges, rollers or springs, and the opener rail wants a specific approach depending on drive type: a chain drive, a screw drive and a belt drive each have different rules about what goes on the rail, including one where the answer is nothing at all.

How you can tell: The squeal is completely absent when you move the door by hand with the trolley disengaged, and it's clearly coming from the rail or the powerhead rather than the door.
- Close the door, unplug the opener, pull the release cord.
- Move the door by hand through its full travel. Silence means the door is fine.
- Re-engage the trolley with the door closed. Never with it open.
- Identify your drive type — chain, belt or screw — because the correct treatment differs and one of them takes nothing.

- A squeal that changes pitch with motor speed rather than door position points at the motor rather than the rail.

The squeal that survives being lubricated
Hands-on — moderate riskThis is the diagnostically interesting one, and it has two very different answers.
The first: the lubricant left. In a Mesa or Scottsdale garage, ceiling-adjacent temperatures in summer are well beyond what a light lubricant tolerates on a vertical surface. It thins, it migrates off the pin, and three or four weeks later the squeal is back. That isn't a failure — it's a maintenance interval. Doors here genuinely need lubricating more often than national advice suggests, and using the right product matters more here than most places.
The second: the part is worn, not dry. A hinge sleeve that has gone oval, a roller stem worn down, or a bearing whose race is pitted will keep squealing no matter what you put on it, because the noise is coming from surfaces that no longer fit together. Lubricant reduces it briefly and then it returns, usually with a rougher edge each time.
Telling them apart is straightforward: how long does the quiet last? Weeks means migration. Days or hours means wear. And a squeal that's slowly acquiring a gritty quality is heading toward a grind, which is a different page and a shorter timeline.
How you can tell: Track how long the silence lasts after a proper lubrication. That interval is the diagnosis.

- Note the date and listen weekly.
- Quiet for months means the door is fine and you have a maintenance schedule.
- Quiet for weeks means heat migration. Shorten the interval and consider whether a heavier product suits your garage.
- Quiet for days, or not at all, means the part is worn. Identify which one by isolating it at slow speed by hand.
- Check that specific part for play — a wheel that wobbles, a hinge with movement at the pivot, a stem that's visibly reduced.
- A worn hinge or roller is an inexpensive part. A worn shaft bearing is a spring-tension job.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself
- Your ear, up close — squeals are speed-sensitive, so moving the door slowly by hand and getting near the parts is the whole diagnostic
- A flashlight — a dry hinge pin looks bright and clean, a lubricated one doesn't. That difference is visible if you can see it
- A thumb — the pliable-versus-plastic test on a rubber seal is the fastest way to rule the rubber causes in or out

Things not to do — and why
It's a water-displacing penetrant, not a lubricant. It thins out, attracts our abundant dust, and can wash away the grease already on a part — leaving that part drier than before. WD-40's own white lithium grease product is a different thing entirely and perfectly fine.
The wheel is supposed to grip the channel and roll. A greased tread skids instead, which is louder than the squeal you started with and harder on both the wheel and the track.
It's a guide surface, not a bearing surface. Anything sticky in there catches fine silt and turns into a lapping compound. Clean it and leave it dry.
A seal that squeaks has hardened, and hardened rubber doesn't soften back. Lubricant buys weeks. Replacement is the answer, and it's an inexpensive part.
Winding cones, set screws, drums and bearing plates all sit inside the counterbalance. Lubricating the outside of a spring and adjusting one are entirely separate activities, and only the first belongs on a homeowner's list.
That's a squeal turning into a grind, which means the contact has moved from friction to material removal. The timeline gets considerably shorter at that point.
It works often enough that people keep doing it, and it teaches you nothing when it doesn't. It also puts lubricant in places that specifically shouldn't have it — the track and the wheel treads being the two that matter.
They sit in the brackets that anchor the lift cables under the tension the springs hold. Those carry factory warning labels, and a squeak isn't a reason to test them.
Why doors here squeal on a schedule
Squealing is more of a seasonal event in Phoenix-area garages than it is in most of the country, and there's a straightforward reason for it.
A garage ceiling here gets extremely hot in summer — hot enough that light lubricants thin dramatically and run off vertical surfaces like hinge pins and roller stems. A door lubricated properly in March can be genuinely dry by August, with nothing having worn at all.
- Lubricant migrates in the heat — the practical result is that doors here need lubricating more often than national maintenance advice suggests, and a returning squeal is usually a schedule problem rather than a fault.
- Monsoon dust gets into open bearings — fine silt in an unsealed steel roller bearing is what turns this year's squeal into next year's grind. Sealed nylon rollers are a genuinely better fit for this climate.
- Bottom seals harden rather than tear — heat and UV stiffen the rubber while it still looks perfectly intact, which is why the squeak-at-touchdown version is so common and so often misdiagnosed.
- Side stop moulding stiffens the same way — a hardened flap presses on the door face instead of resting against it, and drags for the full travel.
- Screw-drive openers are heat-sensitive — the rail lubricant on a screw drive thins in a hot garage, and that's an opener squeal rather than a door one.
Keeping the squeal away
This is the most preventable symptom on the door hub, and the prevention is genuinely small.
- Lubricate twice a year, and schedule one of them for spring so the door goes into summer with a full film rather than running dry through the hottest months.
- Use the right product rather than whatever's on the shelf — silicone or white lithium grease. The lubrication page explains why the difference matters more than it sounds like it should.
- Replace steel rollers with sealed nylon when they're due — the seal keeps lubricant in and dust out, which addresses both of this climate's contributions at once.
- Replace the bottom seal when it stops being pliable rather than when it looks damaged. Here it hardens years before it tears.
- Note how long the quiet lasts after lubricating — that interval is a diagnostic. Months is healthy, days means something is worn.
- Keep the channels swept so grit isn't being fed into the roller bearings every cycle.
- Listen at slow speed once a season — a squeal at walking pace shows up long before it's audible at full speed, which is the earliest warning a door gives.
What a squeal turns into if it's left
Squealing is the first stage of a wear sequence, and each step here causes the next one.
The whole sequence starts with a can of lubricant not being used, which makes this the cheapest place on the hub to intervene.
What we do about a squealing door
A squeal call is usually a maintenance visit with a diagnosis attached — the useful part is separating the parts that are dry from the parts that are finished.
- Cycle the door by hand at low speed to locate each noise source individually
- Check every hinge pin and sleeve for wear at the pivot rather than just dryness
- Spin and rock every roller to assess bearing condition and stem play
- Lubricate all pivot points, the spring coils and the shaft bearings with the right product for each
- Clean the channels back to dry steel rather than lubricating them
- Check both rubber seals — the bottom astragal and the side stop moulding — for hardening
- Assess the shaft bearings for roughness that indicates wear rather than dryness
- Identify any component that stays noisy after lubrication and price the replacement
- Advise on whether sealed nylon rollers are worth it for your particular garage
- Re-run the safety reversal test the way UL 325 requires before we leave

Questions we get asked about this
Almost always because a pivot point has run dry. The candidates are hinge pins turning in their sleeves, roller bearings and stems, the torsion spring's coils moving against each other, and the shaft bearings. There are two rubber sources as well — the bottom seal on the concrete and the stop moulding on the door face — and those squeak because they've hardened rather than because they're dry.
Silicone spray or white lithium grease. Those are the two products that belong on a garage door, and there's a whole page on which parts get which and how much. What doesn't belong is the classic blue-can WD-40 — it's a water-displacing penetrant that thins out, collects dust and can strip existing grease. WD-40's own white lithium grease product is a different item and is fine.
Move it by hand, slowly. Close the door, unplug the opener, pull the release cord, then raise it in six-inch stages. Squeals are speed-sensitive, so they get louder and clearer at walking pace, and you can get your ear next to the part rather than guessing from across the garage. Then note whether the noise travels with the door or stays in one place.
In this climate it's usually the lubricant migrating rather than a fault. Garage ceilings here get hot enough in summer that a light lubricant thins and runs off a vertical hinge pin over a few weeks. If the quiet lasts weeks, that's a maintenance interval. If it lasts days or hours, the part is worn rather than dry and lubricant won't fix it.
No. The track is a guide surface, and anything sticky in there catches the fine dust this area produces in quantity, which turns into a grinding paste between the wheel and the channel. Wipe the channel clean and leave it dry. Lubricant goes on the bearings, hinges, spring and shaft — never in the track and never on the wheel treads.
On its own, no — it's friction announcing itself long before it becomes damage, which is genuinely useful information. What matters is not letting it run for years. A dry pivot eventually wears its sleeve, and a squeal that develops a gritty edge is on its way to becoming a grind, which is material loss rather than noise.
The outside of it, yes — the coils slide against each other and a light film reduces both noise and friction. What you can't do is anything else on that shaft: winding cones, set screws, drums and bearing plates are all inside the counterbalance system. And if there's a visible gap in the coil, stop entirely, because that's a broken spring and the noise is no longer the issue.
If it's in the last few inches and sounds rubbery, that's the bottom seal deforming against the concrete. Here they harden rather than tear, so a seal that looks perfectly intact can have stopped compressing smoothly. Press it with a thumb — if it feels like plastic rather than rubber, that's your answer. Grit trapped under the seal makes a similar noise and costs nothing to rule out.
Twice a year is the sensible baseline here, and more often than national advice suggests, because heat moves lubricant off the parts faster in a Phoenix-area garage than in a temperate one. A good rhythm is spring and fall, with the spring one timed so the door goes into summer with a full film.
Because the noise isn't in the door. Move it by hand with the trolley disengaged — silence means the rail, the trolley or the motor is making the sound. Openers squeal for their own reasons, and the treatment depends on drive type. A belt should never be lubricated at all; a chain and a screw drive each want something different.
Not necessarily. Dry rollers squeal and go quiet when lubricated. Worn rollers squeal, go quiet briefly, and come back — and they'll usually have visible play when you rock the wheel by hand. That play is the deciding test. If they're steel and they're due anyway, sealed nylon is the upgrade that makes the biggest difference to how the door sounds. We'll tell you which way that test came out on the garage door tune-up rather than selling ahead of it.
Pitch and texture. A squeal is high and fairly clean — surfaces sticking and slipping. A grind is low and gritty — surfaces removing material from each other. That distinction matters a great deal: a squeal is a warning with time attached, while a grind is damage already happening, and lubricant is the wrong answer to the second one.
