Noisy Garage Door Opener? Diagnose It By The Sound
Every garage door makes some noise. The question is whether yours has started making a new one. Nobody calls us because their door has always been a bit loud — they call because there's a sound in it now that wasn't there in March, and it's the kind of sound that makes you look up. That instinct is right. Garage doors are unusually honest machines: a specific failure produces a specific noise, and it produces it well before anything actually breaks. So the useful way through this isn't a checklist of parts. It's working out what you're hearing, because the sound is the diagnosis.
This is general guidance based on what we see on service calls — it isn’t a substitute for someone looking at your actual door. Every door is a little different, and if anything here feels beyond what you want to take on, stop and give us a call.
Two sounds mean stop using the door
Almost everything on this page is a maintenance problem. These two aren't.
- A single loud bang — like a gunshot or a scaffold pole dropping — and the door has been different ever since.
- A sharp metallic crack from up near the ceiling, followed by the door feeling much heavier or running crooked.
- Grinding from the opener head with the door barely moving, or not moving at all.
- A rhythmic scraping or gouging sound from the track that's new, especially with the door visibly tilted in the opening.
- Any sound accompanied by a cable hanging slack or a spring with a visible gap in it.
The bang is what a torsion spring sounds like when it lets go, and once it has, the door's weight is no longer being carried — a 150 to 250 pound panel is being held by an opener that was designed to nudge it. Grinding at the opener head usually means the nylon drive gear is being chewed up, and every additional cycle takes more of it. In both cases running the door makes the repair bigger. 1Record it on your phone
Stand under the door and video a full open and a full close. You'll hear things on playback that you miss standing there, and being able to replay the exact moment the noise happens tells you where in the travel it is — which is most of the diagnosis.

2Separate the opener from the door
With the door closed, pull the emergency release and raise the door by hand, slowly. Every noise you hear now is the door and its hardware. Then let the opener run with nothing attached — every noise you hear then is the opener. Two minutes, and it halves the problem.

3Put a hand on the frame
While somebody runs the door, rest your palm lightly on the vertical track, then a wall stud, then a ceiling joist near the rail hangers. Where you feel the most vibration is usually where the noise is originating, or at least where it's getting into the building.
You’ll know it worked when: You've located where the vibration is strongest rather than guessing from the sound alone.

4Check the obvious hardware
Run your eye along the hinges, the roller brackets, the track brackets and the lag bolts holding the rail hangers to the ceiling. A garage door loosens itself over thousands of cycles, and a bolt you can turn with your fingers is a bolt that's been rattling.
You’ll know it worked when: Nothing on the door or the rail is finger-loose.
Is it the opener or the door?
This is the split that matters, because people spend money on the wrong half of it constantly. It takes two minutes and no tools.
Only pull the release with the door fully closed, and only if the spring above the door is intact. If you can see a gap in the spring, nothing is holding the door's weight and the release is the last thing you want to touch.

A garage door is one of the few machines in a house where you can diagnose most faults with your ears from twenty feet away, and that's worth taking advantage of.
The reason is that the system has very few noise sources and they're all different in character. Rotating parts under load — rollers, bearings, the drive gear — produce continuous sounds that rise and fall with speed: squeals, whines, grinds. Loose parts produce intermittent sounds tied to vibration: rattles and buzzes. Parts under changing load produce single events: bangs and pops as a section takes weight or a hinge flexes. And the drive train produces rhythmic sounds tied to its own motion, which is why a loose chain slaps in time with travel rather than randomly.
The second half of it is location. Because the door travels through a fixed path, a noise that happens at the same point every cycle is telling you where the fault is, not just what it is. A squeal that starts as the top section reaches the curve is a roller at the curve. A bang that only happens at full open is the door hitting something at full open. Recording a cycle on your phone and watching where the door is when the noise fires is genuinely more informative than any amount of poking around.
It's also worth understanding the drive types, because expectations differ. A chain drive is metal running over a sprocket, and it will always be the loudest option — that's not a fault, that's what it is. A belt drive uses a reinforced rubber belt and removes most of the drive-train noise. A screw drive turns a threaded steel rod and lands somewhere in between, with a characteristic whine. Direct drive keeps the motor on the rail and is generally the quietest of the lot. If your chain drive is noisy but nothing is actually wrong with it, no amount of adjustment will make it sound like a belt.
And the last piece, which surprises people: on most doors, the opener is not the main noise source. It's the thing that moves the door, and the door is what's making the racket. That's why the release-and-lift test at the top of this page is worth two minutes of anybody's time.
So before you buy anything, spend the two minutes on the release test and the phone recording. Between them they'll usually tell you which of the eight causes below you're actually dealing with.

What’s actually causing it
These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.
Grinding — the drive gear is failing
High risk — call a technicianThis is the noise to take seriously. Inside the opener head, the motor drives a nylon gear that turns the sprocket, and that gear is deliberately the weakest link — it's designed to give way before the motor or the door does. When its teeth start shearing, you get a dry, chewing grind while the motor runs happily and the door moves slowly, jerkily, or not at all. The important thing about it is that the failure accelerates. A gear with a few teeth gone still catches occasionally; every cycle after that removes more, and the powder and shavings it leaves inside the housing don't help anything else in there either.
How you can tell: The motor sounds normal but the door doesn't match it. Grinding comes from the opener head rather than from anywhere along the door. Often there's a fine white or gray plastic dust on top of the door or on the floor beneath the opener.
Squealing and screeching — something dry is turning
Hands-on — moderate riskA high, rising squeal that tracks the door's speed is a rotating part running without lubrication. There are two candidates and they're distinguishable by where the sound comes from. Rollers squeal along the length of the track, and the noise travels with the door. Shaft bearings — the ones in the end bearing plates at each end of the spring shaft, and the center bearing — squeal from a fixed point up near the ceiling, with a rhythmic quality because they're rotating slowly. Steel rollers with exposed bearings are far worse for this than nylon ones, and in a garage full of fine dust they're worse again, because the grit works into the race and grinds the grease away.
How you can tell: Listen for whether the sound moves with the door or stays put. Moving means rollers. Fixed and up high means a shaft bearing. Spin each roller between finger and thumb with the door closed — one that resists, wobbles, or feels notchy is done.
- Close the door and unplug the unit at the ceiling before you begin. It costs ten seconds and it takes every remote, app and close timer out of play.
- Get a lubricant made for garage doors — silicone or white lithium. Not the classic blue-can WD-40 — it thins out, attracts dust, and can wash away the grease already on the part.
- With the door closed, spray the roller stems where they enter each hinge, and the hinge pivot points. A little goes a long way; you're not painting it.
- Do the end bearing plates at both ends of the spring shaft, and the center bearing. These are the ones people forget and they're the classic squeal source.
- Lightly lubricate the torsion spring's coils. It stops coil-on-coil binding and it's a two-second job.
- Wipe out the tracks with a dry cloth rather than lubricating them. Tracks are meant to be dry — grease in a track collects the dust that then wears your rollers.
- Run the door a few times and listen again. If a roller still squeals after lubrication, its bearing is worn out and it needs replacing rather than oiling.

Rattling — hardware has worked loose
Basic checkThe most common noise complaint and usually the most satisfying to fix. A garage door cycles thousands of times, and every one of those cycles vibrates every bolt on it a little. Over a few years, hinge bolts back off, roller brackets loosen, track brackets shift on the wall, the bolts joining rail sections work loose, and the lag bolts holding the rail hangers to the ceiling joists lose their grip. None of it is dramatic on its own; collectively it turns a door into a percussion instrument. The good news is that an hour with a socket set genuinely transforms the sound of most doors.
How you can tell: A busy, loose rattle through the whole travel rather than at one specific point, often worse at the start and the end of a cycle when the door changes speed. Put a hand on a hinge or a bracket while somebody runs the door and you'll feel the culprit buzzing.
- Work with the door closed and the opener unplugged so nothing can run while your hands are on it.
- Go over every hinge with a 7/16 inch or 1/2 inch socket. Snug, not gorilla — overtightening strips the sheet metal and makes the hole oval, which is worse than loose.
- Check the roller brackets and the track brackets on both sides, and the bolts joining track sections.
- Move to the rail: the bolts joining rail sections, the bolt at the header bracket above the door, and the lag bolts holding the hangers into the ceiling joists.
- Check the bolts holding the opener head to its hangers. These loosen more than anything else because the motor is right there vibrating them.
- Look for hinge holes that have gone oval, or bolts spinning without tightening. Those aren't a tightening job any more — the part needs replacing.
You’ll know it’s right when: Nothing on the door or the rail moves when you push on it, and the rattle is gone or greatly reduced.
Banging and popping — sections and hinges under load
Hands-on — moderate riskA sectional door is several panels hinged together, and as it goes round the curve from vertical to horizontal each joint articulates under load. When the hinges are worn, the pin holes elongate and the section drops a fraction before catching — and that catch is a bang. Doors missing a strut do something similar: without the horizontal reinforcing bar, a wide panel flexes under its own weight and pops as it goes over. And a door whose travel limits are set too far bangs simply because it's driving into its physical stops at each end.
How you can tell: A sharp report once or twice per cycle, usually at the same point — most often as the top section rounds the curve, or right at the end of travel. Nothing squeals, nothing rattles, it's a single event.
- Watch a cycle and note the exact moment of the bang. Where the door is at that instant is where the fault is.
- With the door closed, inspect the hinges at that section. Look for elongated pin holes, cracks radiating from the bolt holes, and hinges that have worn shiny where they pivot.
- Check whether the top section has a strut across it. Wide doors, and lightweight steel doors especially, need one, and installers occasionally leave them off.
- Look at the top section's flexing as it goes over the curve — a section that visibly bows is telling you what the noise is.
- If the bang is at the very end of travel, look at the travel limit settings instead. Reducing travel slightly so the door stops without driving into its stops often cures it outright.
- Replace worn hinges rather than tightening them. Once the hole is oval, tightening does nothing.

Slapping and clanking — a loose chain
Hands-on — moderate riskA rhythmic metallic slap in time with the door's travel is chain slack. Chains stretch — that's not a defect, it's what a chain under repeated load does over thousands of cycles — and once there's enough slack, the loose run whips against the rail on every pass. You'll often hear a heavier clunk at the moment the door changes direction, as the slack takes up in the opposite direction. Belt drives have their own version: a worn or slack belt can skip a tooth on the pulley, which sounds like a sharp snap rather than a slap.
How you can tell: The noise is rhythmic and keeps time with the movement rather than being random. Look at the chain along the rail with the door stopped mid-travel — if it hangs visibly below the rail or you can lift it a long way with a finger, that's your answer.
- Unplug the opener before touching the chain.
- Look at the sag along the rail. Manufacturers give a specific figure for their rail, and it's a small one — check your manual rather than guessing, because it varies by model and rail type.
- Find the adjustment. Most chain drives use a threaded rod and two nuts where the chain meets the trolley.
- Take up slack in small increments and check as you go. Over-tightening is a genuine problem, not a theoretical one — it loads the sprocket bearings and the motor and shortens the life of both.
- Run the door and listen. The slap should be gone without the chain becoming taut like a guitar string.
- If the chain is correctly tensioned and still noisy, look at the sprocket teeth for hooking or wear, and at the trolley for play.
You’ll know it’s right when: The chain sits at the manufacturer's specified sag with no slap, and the door runs smoothly through both direction changes.
Scraping — something is rubbing where it shouldn't
Hands-on — moderate riskA continuous drag or grind that isn't coming from the opener head is usually a roller running against the side of the track rather than rolling cleanly along it. That happens when the track is out of alignment, when a track section has shifted at a joint, when a bracket has loosened and let the track move, or when the door itself is running slightly crooked because one cable has more slack than the other. It also happens when a roller's stem has bent, so the wheel sits at an angle in the track. The tell is consistency: it happens at the same height, in the same direction, every single time.
How you can tell: Follow the sound to a point on the track and look at that spot with the door in a different position. You'll often find a shiny wear line on the track flange, or a gap where two track sections don't quite line up.
- Watch a cycle and pinpoint exactly where along the track the scrape happens.
- With the door closed, look at the track at that height for dents, gaps at joints, and brackets that have pulled away from the wall.
- Sight along both vertical tracks from floor level. They should be parallel and plumb, with an even gap to the door.
- Check the roller at that point. A bent stem is visible if you look at the wheel end-on — it won't sit square in the track.
- Snug up any loose track brackets. Small alignment errors sometimes cure themselves once the bracket is holding properly again.
- Look at the door in the opening for evenness. A door sitting noticeably higher on one side is not a track problem, it's a cable or spring problem.
You’ll know it’s right when: The door runs the full travel with no drag, and there's no fresh wear line on the track flange.
The ceiling shakes and the room above hears everything
Hands-on — moderate riskThis is a different complaint dressed as a noise complaint. The sound isn't unusually loud in the garage — it's just getting into the house. Anything rigidly bolted to the structure transmits vibration into it, and an opener is bolted to the ceiling joists with the door's mass hanging off the other end of the rail. Long, thin hanging straps flex and amplify; short rigid ones transmit directly. A rail hung from a single joist puts everything into that one joist, which is often a bedroom floor. And a chain drive, being the most vibration-heavy type, gets the most complaints of this kind by a distance.
How you can tell: The noise is far more objectionable upstairs or in the room next to the garage than it is standing in the garage. You can feel the ceiling move when the door runs, and putting a hand on the hanger straps during a cycle tells you immediately.
- Run the door with a hand on each rail hanger, then on the joist, then on the header bracket above the door. The one buzzing hardest is where to start.
- Tighten every lag bolt in the hangers and the header bracket. Loose fasteners rattle and transmit more, not less.
- Look at how the rail is hung. Long straps that flex should be shortened or braced; hangers attached to a single joist do better spread across two.
- Check the header bracket above the door specifically. It takes a lot of load and it's frequently found loose or fixed into drywall rather than solid framing.
- Consider anti-vibration isolation pads between the opener hangers and the mounting points. They're inexpensive and they make a real difference on a chain drive.
- If the door itself is the source, fix that first. Isolating the mounting on a door with dry rollers just changes the pitch of the problem.
You’ll know it’s right when: The ceiling no longer moves visibly during a cycle, and the noise in the room above has dropped noticeably.
Humming and buzzing — the motor is struggling
High risk — call a technicianA motor that hums or buzzes without doing much is a motor that's energised and can't turn. There are two reasons for that. The first is the capacitor: it provides the starting kick, it's heat-sensitive, and here it degrades faster than almost anywhere. Without enough of a kick the motor draws current and hums without rotating. The second is mechanical: the door is simply too heavy or too jammed for the motor to move, which usually means a spring has broken or something is binding hard. Either way the motor is drawing heavy current while stationary, which heats it fast.
How you can tell: The opener makes a sustained hum or buzz and the door moves very slowly or not at all. Sometimes it starts if you help the door by hand, which points at the capacitor. Sometimes the motor cuts out after a few seconds on its thermal protection.
What your opener is telling you, by brand
By drive type
Before chasing a fault, it's worth knowing what your opener sounds like when it's healthy. These are genuinely different machines and expectations should differ with them.

What you’ll need if you’re doing this yourself
- Your phone's video camera — the single most useful diagnostic tool for this — you'll hear on playback what you miss standing there
- Garage door lubricant — silicone or white lithium made for doors. Never WD-40, which strips lubricant rather than adding it
- A 7/16-inch and 1/2-inch socket or nut driver — almost every bolt on a residential door is one of these two
- A stepladder — for the rail hangers, the header bracket, the shaft bearings and the opener head
- A flashlight — for reading wear on track flanges, hinge holes and sprocket teeth
- A clean rag — for wiping tracks out dry — tracks should never be lubricated
- A helper — somebody to run the door while you keep a hand on the hardware is worth more than any tool here
Things not to do — and why
Rollers are supposed to roll along a dry track, not slide through grease. Lubricant in the track collects the fine dust that gets everywhere here, and that paste grinds roller bearings out far quicker than nothing at all would.
It's a solvent and water displacer, not a lubricant. It strips out what's already in the bearings and leaves everything drier than before — which is why doors treated with it get louder a few weeks later.
That noise is nylon gear teeth being removed, and the rate accelerates as more go. Pull the emergency release and use the door by hand until it's repaired — every cycle you skip is gear you keep.
The lift cables terminate there, and those brackets carry the door's full weight under tension. Unbolting one is one of the more reliable ways to get seriously hurt on a garage door.
Hinges and brackets are bolted through sheet metal. Past snug you start tearing the metal and elongating the hole, and an oval hole rattles worse than a loose bolt ever did — with no way back short of replacing the part.
The track keeps the door aligned and carries its weight. Metal that's been bent twice is weakened, and it lets go later — usually with the door part way up, which is the worst moment for it.
The struggle is the diagnosis. Adding force means the opener now pushes harder through whatever is causing the noise, and it removes the margin that makes the door stop for an obstruction.
On most doors the opener is a minority of the sound. Replacing it and finding the door just as loud is a genuinely common and entirely avoidable disappointment — do the release-and-lift test first.
What our conditions do to a quiet door
Doors get louder everywhere as they age. They get louder faster here, and for reasons that are specific enough to be worth knowing.
The main one is dust. Monsoon silt is extraordinarily fine — far finer than ordinary household dust — and it finds its way into places grit has no business being, including the open bearing races of steel rollers and the shaft bearings at each end of the spring. Once it's in there it doesn't just sit; it mixes with the lubricant and becomes a mild grinding paste. That's why a door here can go from quiet to squealing over the course of one bad storm season, and why lubrication intervals that work elsewhere are too long for us.
- Monsoon silt is the main enemy — fine dust in roller bearings and shaft bearings turns lubricant into grinding paste. Lubricate more often here than a manual written for a temperate climate suggests.
- Heat thins lubricant — a garage ceiling here passes 130°F in summer, and light oils run out of the places they're needed. A proper garage door product holds up far better than general-purpose spray.
- Thermal cycling loosens hardware — sixty-degree daily swings expand and contract every bolt on the door, which is why hardware here works loose faster and rattles turn up sooner.
- Springs fatigue sooner — spring cycle life takes a hit in extreme climates by DASMA's own reckoning, and around Mesa and Gilbert that shows up as springs retiring early rather than on schedule, and a door whose springs are weakening is a door whose opener works harder and sounds it.
- Uninsulated steel doors drum — a thin single-layer door in a hot garage flexes more and resonates more. Insulated doors are noticeably quieter as well as cooler, which is a real argument for one here.
- Bedrooms over garages are common in newer builds — a lot of the Gilbert and Queen Creek homes we work in have living space directly above the garage, which turns an ordinary chain drive into a household argument.
Keeping a door quiet
Noise is the one problem where routine maintenance genuinely does most of the work. An hour twice a year covers nearly all of it.
- Lubricate twice a year rather than once — rollers, hinge pivots, both end bearing plates, the center bearing and the spring coils, with a silicone or lithium garage door product.
- Wipe the tracks dry when you lubricate — a rag along both tracks removes the grit that would otherwise chew the rollers. Never spray anything in there.
- Go over the hardware annually with a socket — hinges, roller brackets, track brackets, rail bolts, hangers and the header bracket. Snug, not forced.
- Replace steel rollers with nylon when they're due — nylon rollers are quieter, need less attention, and don't have an exposed bearing race for dust to get into.
- Do the balance test twice a year — release the door and lift by hand. A door getting heavier is a door about to start making noises you'll be paying for.
- Deal with a new noise while it's still small — a squeal is a dry bearing, a grind is a failing one, and the gap between those two is where the cheap fix lives.
- Consider isolation pads if there's a room above — inexpensive, and they address the transmission rather than the noise, which is usually the actual complaint.
How noise fits the bigger picture
Sound is nearly always the earliest symptom in a sequence, which is what makes it valuable.
This is why we take noise complaints more seriously than the customer usually expects us to. A door that has started making a new sound is a door telling you about a problem months before that problem strands you, and almost every expensive garage door repair we do was audible for a while first.
When to have us out
Call if you're hearing grinding from the opener head, if the door made a single loud bang and hasn't been right since, if a noise persists after you've lubricated everything properly, if the door is scraping at the same spot every cycle, or if the motor hums without moving much. Also worth a call if the door has simply become steadily louder over a couple of years — that's usually several small things at once, and it's a good candidate for a proper going-over rather than piecemeal fixes.
- Run the door and isolate the noise source by ear and by hand, with the opener both engaged and disconnected
- Check every roller for free rotation, wear and bent stems, and every hinge for elongated holes and cracks
- Inspect and lubricate the end bearing plates, center bearing and spring coils properly rather than superficially

What quieting a door involves
This ranges from a can of lubricant to a spring job, so a single number would be meaningless. What decides it:
- Whether it's lubrication and tightening A large share of noise complaints are exactly this, and it's the least involved end of the range by a distance.
- How many rollers need replacing Individual rollers are inexpensive; a full set on a door where they've all been running dry in dusty air is a different job.
- Whether hinges or track sections are damaged Worn hinges and elongated holes need parts rather than tightening, and a dented track section is a replacement.
- Whether the drive gear has gone A gear kit is a defined repair, but it's rarely the whole story — the reason it stripped usually needs addressing too.
- Whether the springs are behind it A door getting gradually louder and heavier is often a spring conversation, and wire size, length, cycle rating and one-versus-two-spring setups all matter. Noise from tired wheels is the cheaper end, and garage door roller replacement usually quietens a door more than any change of opener would.

Questions we get asked about this
Sudden is the important word. A door that has gradually got louder is usually dry hardware and loose bolts, but a noise that appeared overnight points at something that changed — a roller bearing that finally gave out, a hinge that cracked, a chain that jumped, or in the worst case a spring that broke. Record a cycle on your phone and note where in the travel the sound happens; that will tell you more than anything else.
If the motor runs but the door barely moves, that's the nylon drive gear inside the opener head shearing its teeth. It's designed to be the sacrificial part, so this is the system working as intended, but the failure accelerates with every cycle. Stop running it, use the manual release in the meantime, and expect the repair to include a look at door balance — gears usually strip because the door got heavy.
Something rotating is running dry. If the squeal moves along with the door, it's the rollers. If it stays fixed up near the ceiling, it's a shaft bearing in one of the end bearing plates. Lubricate the roller stems, hinge pivots, both bearing plates and the spring coils with a garage door product — never WD-40 — and spin each roller by hand. Any that don't turn freely are worn out and want replacing.
Unplug the opener, then go over every bolt on the system with a 7/16 or 1/2 inch socket: hinges, roller brackets, track brackets, rail joints, ceiling hangers and the header bracket above the door. Snug them rather than forcing them — past snug you start tearing sheet metal and making the hole oval, which rattles worse. An hour of this transforms the sound of most doors.
As the door transitions from vertical to horizontal, each hinged joint articulates under load. Worn hinges with elongated pin holes let a section drop a fraction before catching, and that catch is the bang. A missing strut on a wide top section does something similar by letting the panel flex. Inspect the hinges at the point where the noise happens and look for oval holes and cracks.
Most noises are wear rather than danger, but two are worth stopping for. A single loud bang followed by the door feeling heavier or running crooked is a broken torsion spring, and the door's weight is no longer being carried properly. Grinding from the opener head means the drive gear is failing. In both cases running the door makes the repair larger — and in the spring case it's genuinely hazardous.
Yes, meaningfully — a belt removes most of the drive-train noise, and it's the usual recommendation where there's a bedroom above the garage. What it won't do is quiet the door itself. If your rollers are dry or your hinges are worn, a belt drive will simply let you hear them more clearly. Do the release-and-lift test first so you know how much of the noise the opener is actually responsible for. Whatever the test leaves behind is what the garage door opener repair should be aimed at.
That's transmission rather than volume. The opener is bolted to the joists, so vibration goes straight into the structure — and long flexing hanger straps or a rail hung from a single joist make it worse. Tighten every lag bolt, check the header bracket above the door, and consider anti-vibration isolation pads between the hangers and their mounting points. Fix any door noise first, though, or you're just isolating a louder source.
Twice a year is the right interval here, which is more often than most manuals suggest, because our dust is unusually fine and gets into bearings that would stay clean elsewhere. Do the roller stems, hinge pivots, both end bearing plates, the center bearing and the spring coils. Wipe the tracks out dry while you're at it — tracks should never be lubricated.
Often dramatically, and it's the first thing to try because it costs almost nothing. Use a garage door lubricant — silicone or white lithium grease — on rollers, hinges, bearing plates and the spring. Not the classic blue-can WD-40, which thins out fast, attracts dust, and can wash away the grease already there. What lubrication won't fix is a rattle from loose hardware or a grinding noise from a worn drive gear, so if the door is as loud afterwards, the noise is coming from somewhere else.
The motor is energised and can't turn. Either the capacitor has degraded — it provides the starting kick and it's heat-sensitive, which matters here — or the door is too heavy or too jammed for the motor to shift, which usually means a broken spring. Unplug it either way; a stalled motor overheats within seconds. Balance needs checking before anyone replaces a capacitor.
Only after you've established how much of the noise it's actually making. Pull the release and move the door by hand: whatever you hear then is the door, and a new opener won't touch it. Plenty of people replace an opener, hear the same racket, and feel understandably cheated. If the opener genuinely is the source and it's old, a belt or direct drive is a real improvement — but do the test first.
Monsoon silt is much finer than ordinary dust and it gets into the open bearing races of steel rollers and into the shaft bearings at each end of the spring. Once there it mixes with the lubricant and becomes a mild abrasive paste. That's a genuine local pattern, and it's the reason we push twice-yearly lubrication here rather than annual — and why wiping the tracks dry matters as much as lubricating anything.
