My Garage Door Only Closes If I Hold the Button Down

If your garage door will only close while you hold the wall button down, you've stumbled onto the most useful single diagnostic in the trade — you just might not know it yet.

That behavior isn't a glitch and it isn't luck. It's a designed override called constant-pressure operation, and it exists for exactly one reason: to let you shut a door whose safety sensors aren't working, while you stand where you can see the whole opening. So the fact that it works, and nothing else does, is close to a diagnosis on its own.

This is about the override itself: what it proves, what it quietly switches off, why some doors won't do it at all, and the handful of cases where holding the button works and sensors turn out not to be the problem.

    Look at both sensor lights

    One sensor each side of the door opening, about six inches off the floor. Note exactly what each light is doing: on, off, dim, steady, or blinking. That's most of the diagnosis right there.

    Clear the beam path

    The beam is invisible and runs floor-level across the whole opening. A bin, a bike wheel, a coiled hose, a bag of soil, a broom leaning at the wrong angle — any of it counts.

    You’ll know it worked when: Clean floor between the sensors with nothing crossing that line.

    Wipe both lenses

    Dry cloth only, no solvents. Out here they build a film of fine dust you genuinely can't see until you wipe it and look at the cloth. This one fix accounts for a lot of our calls after monsoon season.

    You’ll know it worked when: Both lenses are clear and both lights stayed on while you cleaned.

    Re-aim whichever one is misbehaving

    Loosen the bracket just enough to pivot it, aim it straight at its partner, and watch the light. Solid and staying solid means you've found the line — tighten it there without letting it drift.

    You’ll know it worked when: Both lights are steady and the door closes with the remote.

Does it hold-close from the wall button only, or from a remote too?

This is the question that separates a sensor fault from something else entirely, and it takes ten seconds to answer.

Stand where you can see the whole opening. Press and hold the button on a handheld remote. Does the door close while you hold it?
No — only the wall button will do it
What that means: That's the expected, normal answer, and it's good news. Constant-pressure operation is deliberately restricted to the hard-wired wall control. A remote is a radio transmitter sending one command at a time, so there's no way for the opener to know you're still standing there watching — which is the entire premise the override rests on. Everything on this page applies to you, and the underlying fault is almost certainly the sensor circuit.

It won't hold-close from anything, including the wall button
What that means: Then the opener isn't refusing on sensors — it's refusing on something the override doesn't bypass. Constant pressure sets the photo eyes aside; it does not set aside a force fault, a travel limit problem, or a mechanical obstruction the door physically cannot get past. That's a different page.

The door closes normally with a remote too, just not from the app or timer
What that means: Different situation again, and much less alarming. Timed closes and app-triggered closes are 'unattended' operations, and openers hold them to a higher bar — they require a working sensor circuit, an audible warning, and on some models a compatible accessory light installed and programmed. A door that closes fine by hand but refuses on a timer is usually a missing accessory or a disabled feature, not a fault.

Whichever branch you land in, do the test with the doorway clear and in full view. You're deliberately operating a door whose safety system you already know is not doing its job.

What constant-pressure operation actually is

Federal rules have required residential garage door openers made in the US since 1993 to carry secondary entrapment protection — the pair of photo eyes near your floor. Under the UL 325 standard, the opener has to positively confirm that beam is intact before it will close on its own. Not assume it. Confirm it.

But the people who wrote that standard also knew a sensor can fail on a Sunday night, and that a homeowner may need the door shut. So the standard carves out one exception: the opener may close with the sensors bypassed only while a control is continuously held, and only from a control that's physically wired to the unit. Let go and the door stops. That's the whole bargain — you are personally substituting for the safety system, in real time, with your eyes.

That's also why it doesn't work from a remote. A remote sends a single radio command and then goes quiet. The opener has no way to know whether you're standing in the driveway watching or three streets away, so it won't accept a held remote button as a substitute for a working sensor.

Understanding that bargain is what makes this behavior so diagnostically useful. It doesn't just mean 'something is wrong.' It means specifically: the opener's own check of the sensor circuit is failing. Every other thing that stops a door closing — a force setting cranked too tight, a travel limit set past the floor, a roller jammed in the track — is unaffected by the override, because the override doesn't touch any of them. So a door that hold-closes has already ruled all of that out for you.

Constant-pressure operation Closing with the sensors bypassed, for as long as a wired control is held down. Release and it stops.
Unattended operation A close nobody is present for — a timer or an app. Held to a stricter standard than a close you're standing at.
Secondary entrapment protection The non-contact system — the photo eyes. Required on residential openers made in the US since 1993.
Contact reversal The other, older safety system: the door reverses when it physically meets something. Still active during a held close.

Worth holding onto: the override switches off the system that catches what the door hasn't touched yet. Contact reversal still works. But a door that only reverses once it has already made contact with a child or a pet is not the protection anybody is relying on.

What’s actually causing it

These are ordered the way we work through them on a real service call — cheapest and most common first, so you don’t start by replacing a part that was never the problem.

What the held button has already proved for you

Basic check

Before troubleshooting anything, bank what you already know, because it's a lot. A door that closes on a held wall button and refuses every other way has demonstrated all of the following in one press:

The motor works. The drive — chain, belt or screw — works. The travel limits are set close enough to let the door reach the floor. The force setting is high enough to close the door and not so high that contact reversal is tripping early. Nothing is physically jammed in the track. The wall control and its wiring are healthy. Power is good.

That's most of the fault tree gone. What's left is the one circuit the override deliberately sets aside: the safety sensor loop.

How you can tell: The door closes smoothly and completely while you hold the button, with no straining, juddering or reversing. It's not a struggling door — it's a refused one.

The fix
  1. Note whether the door closes the whole way in one held press, or stops partway even while you hold. All the way is a sensor problem; stopping partway while held is a force or obstruction problem and belongs on a different page.
  2. Look at the two photo eyes near the floor before touching anything. On most units one light should be steady and the other steady too.
  3. Note the time of day it happens. If the door behaves normally in the morning and needs the override every afternoon, you've already found it — that's sun in the receiver.
  4. Check whether the opener flashes or clicks about ten times when you try to close it normally. On LiftMaster and Chamberlain units that's the sensor refusal signal confirming the diagnosis.

You’ll know it’s right when: You can state confidently that the fault is in the sensor circuit rather than anywhere else in the system.

Where to stop: Nothing risky in observing. The repair itself is covered on the sensor page — that's where the alignment, wiring and replacement work lives, and there's no sense in us writing it twice. Constant-pressure closing isn't a mode to live in, so get the garage door opener repair on the calendar.

The cost of living on the override

Hands-on — moderate risk

Plenty of people find the held button, decide it's fine, and are still doing it eighteen months later. It's worth being clear-eyed about what that actually means rather than just being told not to.

While you hold that button, the system designed to stop a closing door on something it hasn't touched yet is switched off. Contact reversal still works — the door will reverse if it meets something solid enough to load the motor. The gap between those two things is the whole problem. A small child, a pet, a bike, a foot: those don't reliably load a motor enough to trigger a reversal until after contact, and contact is the thing you were trying to avoid.

There's a second cost that's easier to overlook. Once the door only closes from the wall button, it stops closing when you leave — because you can't hold a button from the car. Households in this position end up leaving the door open during the day, and an open garage is the most common way a house gets entered around here.

How you can tell: You've stopped thinking of it as a fault. That's the point at which it's worth getting fixed, because the household has adapted around a missing safety system.

The fix
  1. If you're going to use the override until it's repaired, use it standing where you can see the entire opening, front to back, and watch the door all the way down.
  2. Keep children and pets indoors while you do it, not just out of the doorway. Doorways are where they end up.
  3. Don't let anyone else in the household use it who hasn't been told what it switches off.
  4. Treat it as a bridge, with a date on it. The underlying repair is usually one of the least expensive on this site.

You’ll know it’s right when: Everyone using the door knows what the held button does, and there's a fix date rather than an open-ended arrangement.

Where to stop: If there are young children in the house, we'd stop using the override entirely rather than manage it. Leave the door open until it's repaired if you have to — it's the safer of two imperfect options, and the repair rarely takes long to arrange.

Sensors that were never the problem — the previous-owner case

Hands-on — moderate risk

A version of this we see often enough to name. You move in, the door only closes on a held button, and you assume the sensors have failed. Go and look at them: sometimes there are no sensors at all, or they've been unbolted and left hanging, or the wires have been twisted together at the opener to satisfy the circuit while the eyes themselves point at the ceiling.

That's not a fault, it's a decision somebody made — usually to get past a problem they didn't want to pay to fix. It matters because the diagnosis is different: nothing is broken, so nothing will show up as broken. The system was removed.

The variant of this that concerns us most is bypassed sensor terminals. If the wires are jumpered at the opener, the door will close normally with no override needed and no warning of any kind — which means a household can be running with no non-contact protection at all and no reason to suspect it.

How you can tell: Sensors missing, hanging loose, aimed at nothing, or two wires twisted together at the terminal strip. Or a door that closes perfectly on a house where you'd expect trouble.

The fix
  1. Look at both sides of the opening about six inches off the concrete. There should be a small housing on each side, aimed straight across at each other.
  2. Follow both wires back to the opener and look at where they land. Two wires twisted together, or a loop of wire on the sensor terminals with nothing attached, means the system was bypassed.
  3. If the sensors are present but hanging, remount them at the correct height and aim them at each other — six inches is the standard, and both brackets need to be solid.
  4. If they're missing entirely, they're an inexpensive part and every opener made since 1993 was designed to have them.
  5. Undo any bypass at the terminal strip. A working door with jumpered sensors is worse than a door that won't close, because nothing tells you.

You’ll know it’s right when: Both sensors are mounted, aimed, wired to their own terminals, and the door closes normally without anyone holding anything.

Where to stop: If the opener predates photo eyes entirely — no sensor terminals on the board, no brackets, nothing — the override isn't a workaround, it's how that opener has always worked. That's a replacement conversation rather than a repair, and we'll give you a straight view on it.

When the override works and sensors still aren't the answer

Hands-on — moderate risk

Uncommon, but worth knowing because chasing sensors on these is a waste of an afternoon.

The first is a logic board that has lost its sensor circuit rather than the sensors having failed. Both eyes light steadily, the wiring is perfect, and the opener still won't accept the circuit. The tell is that everything you can inspect looks right and the behavior doesn't change no matter what you do at the sensor end.

The second is a door that hold-closes but stops partway even while you hold. That's not the sensor circuit at all — the override doesn't bypass force limits or obstructions, so a door that stops while you're holding is being stopped by something the override can't switch off.

The third is a mismatch between what you're pressing and what the opener expects. Some multi-function consoles have a separate lock or a dedicated button, and a console from the wrong opener generation can look entirely healthy while behaving oddly.

How you can tell: The sensor LEDs are steady and correct, the wiring checks out, and the door still refuses — or it stops partway even while the button is held.

Where to stop: This is the point to hand it over. A board that won't accept a good sensor circuit is diagnosed with a meter rather than by inspection, and it's also the point where the honest answer is sometimes that the unit isn't worth the board. We'd rather tell you that than fit an expensive part into a tired opener.

Things not to do — and why

× Don't tape, wedge, or clamp the wall button down

This is the big one. Holding the button works because a person is standing there able to release it instantly. Tape it and you've created a door that will close on anything in its path, unattended, with nothing to stop it. The whole safety system is switched off for as long as that tape is there.

× Don't treat the override as a fix and leave it for months

It's designed for the one time you need to secure the house before a repair. Every use is a cycle with no entrapment protection — and the underlying sensor problem is usually a ten-minute job or an inexpensive part.

× Don't disconnect or jumper the sensors to stop the nagging

They've been required on every residential opener made in the US since 1993 (as secondary entrapment protection under 16 CFR Part 1211), and a UL 325 opener won't run normally without them anyway. More to the point, they're the system that stops a door on a child or a pet.

× Don't clean the lenses with solvent or glass cleaner

It hazes and crazes the plastic, which scatters the beam permanently. You'll turn a wipeable lens into a sensor that needs replacing.

× Don't mix sensor brands or generations

A sensor from another manufacturer may light up convincingly and still not speak your opener's protocol — which lands you in cause 6 wondering why steady lights aren't enough.

× Don't skip the 2x4 test once it's fixed

Steady lights confirm the beam is intact. They don't confirm the opener will actually reverse on an obstruction, and that's the check that matters.

Why we get this call so often here

Constant-pressure closing is a national behavior, but the reason people around Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler end up depending on it is fairly local.

The single biggest driver is the sun. Our sensors sit low and face straight across the opening, and on a west-facing garage — especially between October and March when the sun sits lower — direct light can flood the receiving eye and drown out the beam. Nothing is broken. The homeowner reaches for the held button, it works, and the arrangement quietly becomes permanent because the door behaves perfectly every morning.

  • Afternoon-only overrides — a door that closes normally at 9am and needs the button at 4pm is a sun problem, not a broken sensor. It's also the version most likely to go unfixed for years.
  • Open doors in summer — once the door won't close from the car, households leave it open through the day. In a valley where an open garage is the most common way a house gets entered, that's the part that concerns us most.
  • Bypassed sensors on resale homes — we find jumpered sensor terminals more often than we'd like on houses that have changed hands. A door that closes normally isn't proof the system is intact.
  • Heat and habit — nobody wants to stand in a 118°F driveway diagnosing a photo eye. The override is genuinely more attractive here than it is somewhere temperate, which is exactly why it sticks.

Not needing the override in the first place

The habit forms because the underlying fault is small and easy to live around. A few things stop it starting.

  • Treat the first held close as a fault, not a fix — the day you first need it is the day it's cheapest and easiest to sort out.
  • Put a date on it if you must use it rather than letting it become how the door works. Almost every household that lives on the override meant it to be temporary.
  • Tell everyone in the house what it bypasses — the risk lands on whoever uses it least carefully, and that's usually not the person who discovered it.
  • Check the sensors on a house you've just bought — present, mounted, aimed at each other, and wired to their own terminals rather than to each other.
  • Shade a west-facing receiver before summer if you've had an afternoon fault before, so you never reach for the button in the first place.

  • A sensor that needs cleaning or re-aiming Frequently free, and frequently something you do yourself in less time than it takes to book us.
  • A failed sensor pair Parts plus a short visit. Sensors are among the cheapest components on the door and we replace them as a matched pair. Fitting the pair is a short garage door opener repair rather than a half-day.
  • Sensors that were removed or bypassed Reinstating a system somebody took out — parts, mounting and wiring rather than a repair, so a little more involved.
  • A logic board that won't accept a good circuit The most significant of the four, and the one where the age of the opener starts to matter to the recommendation.
  • Whether the door itself needs anything We'll test balance and run the reversal test while we're there, because a door that hold-closes has told us nothing about its springs.
